Hi all-

Im scared to death to have Pb. I mean so scared Im considering never moving on from soft food. But then again Im only 4 days post op :( When was your first time? How did it feel? Does it happen often? When you try new food? After do you keep eating? Even if its something else? The thought makes me freak out.

If you chew well and take small bites you may never have a PB episode. so just keep that in mind when you eat. I have been banded for 9 weeks now and have not PB...now that may all change after I have my fill but I just need to keep in mind that if I eat slow and chew well then I shouldn't have a problem.

I've never had a PB yet either. Chew thoroughly, wait between bites to see how you feel. You'll know when it's time to stop. (This is much more applicable after you've had a fill or two.)

They say "Eat until you're no longer hungry, instead of eating until you're full." This is a radically new concept for me, and it definitely takes some getting used to.

I have experienced the discomfort of eating that "one bite too many." It's unpleasant, but it's not the end of the world.

Even in a full fledged PB, as I understand it, it's not like the flu where you're nauseated and vomit. It's more like a baby spitting up. Not pleasant, but not something to be feared.

Hang in there -- it will be okay!

Its not like the normal throwing up... To me it the comment about a baby spitting up is a good example.... It feels like i am burping and all the food just comes up with it... But once it comes up its relief and I feel normal again... i just have to learn what works and what does not work... .I never had this happen until after a few fills

It's different for everyone. I didn't get my first one until like my 5th or 6th fill. I can still eat breads (not often) but very carefully. The worst part about the band is the waiting. Since you are always changing it with fills what you can eat changes also. Rice, Broccoli, and grapes are the worst things for me to eat.

PB and getting stuck are two different things.

PB or productive burp is just that, a burp that brings something up, like previous posters have said--a baby spitting up milk. Ours sometimes includes food. You have no control over whether or not this will happen.

Being stuck can be painful. You can reduce the chances of getting stuck by eating slowly, taking small bites, and chewing well, but it is always a risk. If you feel any pain when you are eating, stop for a bit and wait until it stops before proceeding. Also, keeping your band as loose as you can while still having adequate restriction can lessen the chances of getting stuck.

There are many people who have never had a stuck episode. I am not one of them, but after a couple years of practice with my band, it rarely happens now.

And, "sliming" and PBing are 2 different things. I had my first sliming experience last week (8 months post surgery) - I ate too fast. Let's just say, I NEVER EVER want to experience that again.

Yes, a PB can include slime, but not always. And you can slime without burping. Very rarely do you have slime without pain.

Love your new Avatar pic. Lots of changes in your face goin' on!

I agree with all the previous posters .. pb'ing isn't all that bad. It's merely getting rid of stuff that didn't agree with your band. And once it's over, you feel good again. No nausea.

What I wanted to mention is that soft foods will not work the band correctly in the long run. They will not satisfy you and keep you from being hungry too often. In fact, soft foods are an excellent way to "eat around the band". Not that they don't have their place...during healing or after a fill.. but they shouldn't be a regular part of your food plan.

Glad you're doing well.

I'm almost 4 months post op and haven't yet had a PB or have I thrown up (as mentioned before except once when I ate too much ice cream 2 wks post op). I think you have to really listen to the way you're feeling and know what you can or can't handle.

I've read a lot on here about others experiences over certain foods, so I then take it easy when I try those (like Pasta or bread). I've learned I can't do bread very well, and Pasta is so-so. Sometimes I can other times I can't.

I have been lodged/stuck before. It can be very painful and usually occurs when I've taken too big of a bite without chewing it enough. It hasn't lasted more than a few seconds or maybe a minute, but then it finally unlodges itself.

I too was scared initially to throw up, so I've tried to be really mindful of what I eat, and also not get to big of a fill that I can't eat anything without throwing up.

This has also been one of my biggest fears! I just want to be able to live a normal life and not seem like some kind of freak having to run to the bathroom everythime I eat! LOL I want to make sure the band will enhance my life not add extra pain and suffering.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
