January 2011 Bandsters !!!

Recommended Posts

I am hoping for approval soon, my dr's office is still gathering info at this point. I am chosing to do it beginning of Jan if I can because then my deductible will be met and if I need to see a therapist or dematologist or heck anything else it will be covered 100% I am looking forward to it! :) I have hit a tiny wall though considering my primary doc wont write the necessary letter of recommendation...thank kinda makes me mad...guess I will have to find a doc who will or contact one of my old docs and see if they will do it. I have faith I can get it done though.

I'm scheduled for Jan. 10th. I was all excited until the date was set - now I'm getting cold feet, and wondering what on earth I'm doing. I have severe sleep apnea (56/hr), diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis, and take 8 pills a day. All of my doctors swear that if I lose 150 pounds it will all go away. But the thought of giving up some of my favorite foods for life is killing me almost as much as eating them is. Does anyone else feel like this because all of the posts I've read so far seem to be from people who are excited and super-ready?

Hi everyone smile.gif I am a bit of a newbie to all of this. I hope I am not intruding-I am from Australia. I could really do with some support and encouragement. I have had my consult with the Surgeon and am now booked for surgery on January 18th. I am being banded as well as having my gall Bladder removed. This is due to a "very" large (single) Gall Stone that has been giving me grief-especially this year. I am not insured and have borrowed the entire amount from the bank. I have only told my best friend. I am a single Mum to miss 8 and miss 10. My parents would not understand. I have struggled with my weight for over 30 years and tried every diet known to man and then some :) I am the master of yo yo dieting (hence the big stone) and I also have sleep apnoea, high blood pressure and experienced insulin dependent Gestational Diabetes with both my pregnancies. I have given this procedure a lot of thought and researched information extensively. I am nervous and excited at the same time. I know I will have to put in and work hard along with my band to see the best results..and I can hardly wait. If Christmas and several big family gatherings were not coming up I would have the surgery tomorrow. I have been reading the forums with interest and it is great to find a place where we can all share our experiences.

Hey everyone - I had posted a January 2011 bandsters post bc when I searched I didn't see this one! I am glad I found it! Although, I really don't have much in common with you all and your insurance processes, as I am self pay. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope it's all expedited! I am excited - my surgery is set for Jan 28th. What a way to start off the new year and our new lives, huh?! I am 6'2" and have a 42 BMI (I'm large in more than one way....). I have a fiance and wonderful 10 year old step-son. I work in sales, am currently in Texas but will be moving back home to Illinois next summer once the kiddo finishes up the 4th grade.

I would love to chat and stay in contact with you all throughout all this - I really don't have a support system here - my fiance is very supportive but we all know how men are... lol

Right now I am a little overwhelmed about all the different Protein drink products on the market! And I am thinking to myself, "wow, it's going to be crazy going through all of these and buying sample packets, etc.". I suppose I am just freaking myself out! But I know how important it is to really get that required minimum of Protein in especially those first several weeks post op!!

I hear what you are saying...I've been reminding myself daily that this move is basically calling an end to my love affair with food.

I'm not scheduled yet, but looking at mid January. We can do it!

I wish my insurance covered Lap-Band, but at the same time, I'm glad I don't have to jump through so many hoops. And feel for those who do. Not sure what my date is...looks like mid-January. Let's keep in touch!

Congrats AmyBethy!! How WONDERFUL!!!! :)

DudesMom - are you getting your surgery done here in the states? I know, it is kind of relieving in an odd way about not having to jump through insurance hoops.

I'm currently scheduled for 1/10; could've been banded on 12/23 but considering I just had my consult today I thought it was too much too soon. Now just waiting to see if I will be approved by insurance; more anxious than excited though. My husband is the only one who knows at this point, and he never really seems to want to talk about it. I don't think he likes this idea at all. Oh well; gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

Congratulations AmyBeth!! I'm so happy for you!! I just had my psych eval today and it was a breeze thankfully!! I had heard so many stories of people filling out 300 question forms or sitting with a psychologist for hours but this was super quick and easy!! Now just one more nutrition visit in January and I will hopefully have approval and a date for the end of the month! Hopefully!

My surgery is now pending approval with the insurance company; not nearly as nervous as I thought I would be. Just glad the doctor's office submitted everything so quickly. Let the waiting game begin...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
