I see so many people post they had a hernia repair when they had the surgery. I thought they were suppossed to see them when doing the ent test. I was wondering have anyone had the endoscopy test to come normal but end up having a repair when the lap band surgery was done?

I didn't have that test done but did have the ekg. When I woke up I was told that I too had a huge hital hernia and it was repaired. I wasn't surprised since I had been suffering from acid reflux for several years.

Yup...that's exactly what happened to me. I had an endoscopy done because I had a stricture in my esophogus that my surgeon wanted to check out to make sure I was still a good candidate for banding (I knew what being stuck felt like long before banding!) He used a balloon to fix the stricture and everything has been A-OK since then. I asked him if he saw a hernia and answer was no. During surgery, however, he saw one and fixed it! I was surprised, but glad. I used to have TERRIBLE heart burn at night (pre-band). I have not had ANY since surgery and it's been great. I think it is probably a combination of better food choices and the hernia repair.

When I had the EGD done I was told there was a hernia that they would probably repair but after surgery they said they didnt do anything to it?? Dont understand why...if it was there regardless of size would you not think they would have repaired it? I will ask at my follow up in 2 weeks - I don't know if there is a thing that at a specific size they dont bother? I figured since they were in there they would have done it?

I had an upper endoscopy done, abdominal ultrasound and the GI series (xray)...none of them found a hernia. When I woke up, my doc said I had a large hiatal hernia. He said sometimes test don't pick it up when there is one and likewise, tests will diagnose one and when he goes in...he doesn't see it. It's just one of those things....

I was told at my consultation that I may have a hernia too. The physician told me that he would repair it before he places the band. My question is I am a self pay and want to know if this will cost more money?

I was self pay and did not have to pay any extra for the hernia repair

Thanks for you input. That makes me feel better. After paying cash for all of it, just hoping for no extra charges. The pocketbook is empty! LOl

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
