Do I tell or do I keep it a secret???

Recommended Posts

In the beginning I was VERY private about it. My husband and children where the only ones who knew anything in the beginning. Once I had approval and a surgery date I told my kids, my parents, and only about 4 friends. I did not want to have to explain or defend my decision to anyone before the surgery. After surgery I did not want everyone looking at me always wondering how much weight I had lost.

Now I am almost 5 months out and people are really noticing. I still have not made a grand announcement, but if anyone asks how I am losing weight I tell them. So far, everyone has been pretty supportive...at least to my face B)

I am glad that I did not tell everyone at the beginning, but I am getting to the point now that I want to shout it to the rooftops! It is wonderful to FINALLY be successful at weight loss.

the only people that know about my band are my parents and brother. it just seemed easier than trying to explain to everyone, and having friends feel like they made me feel too fat or something. (even though i promised my psychologist at the pre-op appointment that i would tell everyone, oops)

but when people ask what im doing to lose weight, i just say diet and exercise.. its not a lie!

I've told most of my close family and friends... was a little nervous about telling people at work, but am so glad that I did... turns out someone in the office had it two years ago (she's no longer with the company) but one of the people I eat lunch with a lot was good friends with her and knew a LOT about the diet, etc. It's good to know that I have support from the people around me at work and I personally am glad to have people who will question me if they see me making bad choices! Nice to have a back up system when I'm craving something bad for me!

Everyone is different and I definitely understand keeping it secret... but you might also find support you didn't know you'd have like I did :-)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
