Gave pre0op a try with terrible result

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for banding 2 weeks from today. yea!

Yesterday I tried Carnation Instant Breakfast for breakfast and lunch (with half banana). I was starving in the afternoon and ate some pretzels and (I know I know), a few pieces of Dove chocolate.< /p>

Around 4:30 I started to get overheated, shakey and weak.

Thank goodness I was at my nieces home and not driving around. I felt like passing out.....

Has anyone had this experience while pre-op prepping?

I felt just terrible. I did it to myself, but wow was I ill for 15 minutes or so. I ate something and it passed.

I'm really worried about working a busy job on a liquid diet.

The bariatric center I use does not allow any solids at all for 10 days pre-op. Poor attempt at a trial that's for sure. Hopefully it will be better when I offically start.

Hi:

I think that the thing that got me through the ten day liquids before surgery was knowing that if I stuck to it exactly I was making the surgery safer. I felt like I owed that to my Daughter. Remember, it's not so easy, but when you think about how short ten days really is it makes it a little bit easier. You should probably keep one of your pre-op shakes handy so that you can have something every three to four hours so that your blood sugar doesn't play games.

Best wishes to you. It'll be so worth it.

Take care.

Sue

Try sipping some Water or chewing sugar fee gum. You might have had a low sugar reaction. I get sweaty and shakey and want to vomit. Good luck!

How much Protein does Carnation Instant Breakfast have? I would think your not getting enough protein in and your body is starting to realize it is being deprived. It is important to get 50-70 grams of protein a day, so I would try getting a high Protein Drink. I drink the Premier Protein shakes, you can get them at Coscto (or online) and even though I am not a chocolate fan they are yummy and 30 grams of protein per drink!! Also I would get some chewable vitamins and start taking those as well. I take the Flinstones chewables 2 times a day.

I'm using CIB until the Unjury I ordered arrives and I got that way by the third day and had to eat some Soup.

Since then, I make sure I don't let myself get so empty. I am also allowed to eat cottage cheese and yogurt a couple of times a day and that really helps too. The cottage cheese with a little salt and pepper really breaks things up when you get sick of all the sweet shakes too.

The higher % of Protein the longer you will fill full. GNC 100% whey Protein has over 20g per shake. They are great and easy on the wallet. sugar free Jello and sugar free puddings are great Snacks.

I am on day 10 of the liquid diet and my surgery is in 4 days. The first few days were HORRIBLE! I cried, I was mad I couldn't eat. Now, it is so easy and I am down 9 lbs. You can DO this!! This diet isn't for just your surgery, but it prepares you for when your banded. If you need extra motivation, send me a message at any time!

Best of luck!

Mandyrae: I am on day 4 and have 10 days to go. It hasn't been easy. The only time I get hungry is in the evenings when its time to feed my hubby. He's very good and tries to take care of himself. I have eaten a scrambled egg the first night and as long as I can get one little bit of something solid, it helps me, hope its not hurting anything else. I lost 4 lbs in 48 hours, and can't wait till 9-28 when I am banded. I love the Crystal lite sugar free popsicles.

It gets really hard, the 2nd day into my liquid diet I thought I was going to pass out so I had a small salad with no dressing. 4th day I had a small piece of a chicken breast. As the days passed it did it easier though. I ate sooo many SF popsicles, I'm surprised I didn't get tired of them. I did buy the crystal light popsicles as well and they were good!

Good luck with the rest of your diet and trust me it is well worth it!! Your surgery day with be here before you know it!

I didnt have to do a pre op but thought I would anyway - My doc recommends Optifast.

Within 3 days I'd passed out about 4 times. My doc took me off it, since I didnt have to really do it. Truth is, pre op is pretty terrible for you health wise, but it serves a purpose. Its the low carb element than shrinks your liver, so my advice would be to do your very very best, but if you cave in and eat something make it a Protein.

And there's probably better shakes out there nutrition wise too.

I wouldnt have lasted, I suck at willpower for dieting like that, I always have, I still do and I always will. And its had no bearing on my success with a band.

I agree with above posters that CIB is going to be low in Protein. I second the costco Premier Ready to Drink Protein. Also Vitamin Shoppe has good whey isolate Protein Powder and their prices are much better than GNC. As I was loosing weight on my own the doctor let me do my own pre surgery diet (after a failed 500 liquid diet that he put me on). I made the shakes with fat free milk which makes them taste better. candy is going to spike your blood suger whether your diabetic or not.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
