Discouraged

Nat-

I haven't had the LAP-BAND® surgery. In fact i am on here roaming through the forum out of curiosity to see if it is something I want to do.

I've been overweight as long as i can remember. I just turned 40 and I weigh 385 lbs. I have a major obsession with food, but my health is starting to show signs of problems. Truth be told, I'm scared. I'm afraid that if I decide to get this lap-band®, that I'm gonna go crazy. But i also know that my 2 little girls and my wife need me around.

I have tried every diet known to man, but I always run back to the frig to reward myself after i lose 30-50 lbs. And the vicious cycle begins again.

All i wanted to say was don't get discouraged. Remember how you felt when you were in the place I am in right now. Keep looking forward and go for it. I need inspiration.

If anyone understands what i am going through right now, I would appreciate any advise you have from your experience. Not to take anything from Nat's post, but this may help me make my decision easier.

From another guy, let me just say that what made my mind up to get banded was that I finally realized that I really could not do this on my own like I had convinced myself I could for all those years. The more I thought about food I was going to miss, the more I realized that this was the food that was slowly killing me. I was banded 6 days ago. The liquid diet sucks, but you have to look at the larger picture in the weeks, years to come. I HAD to do this, and it sounds like you do to, but you really have to change your own life. Get back on the treadmill, a little at a time, do the diet the way they tell you to, and you will live to do way more than walk your daughter down the isle. Good luck bro.

Hey sweetie, don't feel discourage you made this choice for you to be better. Your wight will soon all come off. I know that i will not be banded until nov 11th and I have 200 pounds to lose. However what i have found to help me begin my journey is the Lap band Journey site. I love that site i track everything and it's lets me know about my calorie intake and my calories burned. It tracks my mood and gives me insiparational quotes. Also the great thing I personal find about it is you get to write yourself letters and have them delievered to your email account whatever date you choose. i have written myself two letters so far because I know from others experience that i will to at some point be discourage and I need to remember y I picked the lap band and what's it suppose to mean to me. I also know from being a social worker and young because i am 24 years old that not being social because of your weight is very unhealthy and you should maybe meet with a therapist. I am 389 pounds and i started my journey at 403 lbs, the biggest i have ever weighed even with bearing a child I never weighed that much. I actually started my journey for only health reasons and the fact that i got to big to even shop at just plus sizes stores. I never want to be small but a nice size 16 would do me good...then i can shop til I drop with my friends. Who I must say we are all big in some type of way which has helped my self-confidence a lot because we have that I am big and if you don't like it that's your problem attitude only problem is when i hit at least a 120 pounds more then all my friends and we can't shop together it brothers me. Sometimes i will not even let people give me a compliment then it is other times like yesterday where I wore my boots and got my hair done and was looking flyy i enjoy compliments then. I am just saying that i think you might really want to meet with a therapist and join a local support group so you can do peer to peer interation face on. I think it might help! From one young lady to another. DON"T GIVE UP!!!:puke:

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
