November bandsters unite!!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone. I just joined yesterday...I will be getting my surgery on Nov. 13th. I can't believe that is only a week from today. It seems like I have been waiting for this for a very very long time.

My Dr. is not having me do a pre-op diet. It seems like most of you are doing one. I wonder why some do it and some don't.

Anyway, Good luck to everyone and congrats to those of you who are getting banded in Nov!!!

Well I finally got banded yesterday morning. Stayed the night in the hospital and got home this morning. I feel great! They gave me tons of anti-nausea medicine and it worked great. Today just taking the liquid advil for the gas pains and have plenty of energy. On Clear Liquids till tomorrow then add in some pureed Soups and cream of wheat Cereal. I have no hunger but keep sipping on liquids to keep hydrated. So glad its over.

I keep reading this section of the bulletin board AND the post-op section, since that is now where I am.

I was banded on 11/3. My doctor has me on broth, sugar-free caffeine-free liquid, SF Jello and popsicles, and Protein Shakes for 2 weeks, and then a change to pureed and very soft foods - so quite different from what a number of you are suggesting.

Also, no Advil or Aleve (ibuprofen or naproxen sodium) for 2 weeks, since I was given Heparin (blood thinner) shots in the hospital to guard against blood clots (also had those compression boots on for the same reason).

I have been taking Roxicet for pain, which is a form of oxycodone. It works well but definitely makes me loopy - so I'm hoping to be able to get off of it very shortly and move to liquid Tylenol.

I have five incision spots and my gut is swollen and bruised - looks like I was in a bad fight. I have gas as well -- Gas X seems to help -- and NO regrets at all about the surgery.

Deb - I was also banded on 11/3. 4 incisions, painful, but not horribly so. Have been taking an RX pain killer, but moving off those onto Tylenol. I am moving around pretty well, are you? I am supposed to head back to work Tuesday or Wednesday, I think I will be OK, but am a little nervous...

Sophie and others -

I am moving fairly well...but today I went to a music rehearsal and then a meeting (in a restaurant, where I had a bowl of turkey broth and Decaf tea), and I took liquid Tylenol because I didn't want to drug myself. By the time I got home, at 3 PM, I was hurting and had to take the Roxicet (the serious drug). It helped with the pain, but also knocked me out...nonetheless, I think managing pain is important. I am taking less pain medication each day, and that is progress.

I bet by Tuesday or Wednesday, you'll be just fine!

I am new to this! I am being banded 11/23. I feel like my doctor has me in the dark,:smile2: he has not said anything about a two week pre-op diet?? I am also getting a hiatal hernia fixed at the same time that they are putting in the lap band. Does anyone know anything about True Results in Dallas? I am here asking for tips, comments, and suggestions to get me through the next couple of weeks. Congrats to everyone:smile2:

Hi I also have a hiatal hernia being fixed at the same time as the band. My Dr says it is a routine procedure and it will not be a problem. As for the 2 week pre op diet I only have to do a week because my BMI is below 38. I am currently on the diet because my surgery is scheduled for 11-12-10. The True Results Nutritionist is the person that gave me my diet and told me how long I had to be on it. I drink two Protein Shakes and small Protein packed dinner. You could probably give your center a call and they could email you a copy of the diet or fax it. I was told the diet was not really for wait loss but more for the purpose of shrinking my liver tom make the banding easier.

Well today is day 4 of my diet and I have cheated. Not anything serious, but I had solid food. I had a wheat wrap (just the wrap) and some cheese. I am going to be strong here on out. I have already lost 6 pounds however.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Well guys, I'm almost ready to go catch the train to go downtown to the hotel in the medical district I'm staying tonight! :smile2: 5:15am call time tomorrow for surgery, surgery is at 7:15am! I have a feeling I will be a morning person tomorrow (I usually ain't!)

Thank you all for sharing your experiences both pre op and post op... they have really helped me to prepare for this and after a year of learning and hoop jumping, I am confident I'm ready to do this!

Will post back here and on the POST op Nov thread either tomorrow nite or Tuesday! Continued prayers are with you all also!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
