Starving on these pre-op protein shakes

Recommended Posts

Surgery is this coming Tuesday, 8/31/10. I am starving on these darn Protein Shakes. That's only 330 calories/day! Will the starvation feeling go away immediately following surgery? I know that following surgery, I will be consuming less (chicken broth, etc) for at least two weeks.

My experience with a liquid diet that low is that I was not getting enough calories. My doctor put me on a 500 liquid diet and I was miserable and perhaps allergic to the product. I do an hour of cardio a day. I was on it for like 4 days and lost nothing (doctor said I would lose a pound a day). When I went back to my own Protein Shake diet with one meal a day Calories about 900 a day I started loosing again. Personally I don't think you are getting enough calories.

I get banded Tuesday also. I was starving the first 2 or 3 days but now not so much. I am on a total liquid diet with just sugar free pudding, popsicles and Jello. I tried the broth but didn't like it so I drink Water instead. And I have 20 grams of Protein each day. So far I have lost 11 pounds since Monday. Just hang in there. Two more days and this will be behind you. The way I'm trying to look at it is, even though I will be on a liquid diet for another week my stomach will be so small I won't be as hungry. Good luck on Tuesday.:)

I am on skim milk and crystal light for two weeks. I wish I could have a Protein Shake. I lost 9 pounds the first three days. These two weeks are the toughest. I have surgery on Sept 10. My goal is 225 pounds and my current weight is 289. Highest has been 308.

I get banded in the morning too! The shakes weren't too horrible, but my cravings were! I will admit I cheated with a bite here and there, but all in all I did pretty good! I have lost 8 lbs so far, I can't wait to weigh myself in the morning (at the hospital) to see where I am! Good luck everyone!

No, it never got better! Last night was my last night for anything. This morning at 10 a.m. is my surgery. However, last night I had a cup of hot Water with a teaspoon of powered chicken broth which was not on the diet. I was only to have water, coffee, tea, etc. The chicken broth helped me. I was ready to eat dirt at that point. September 16, 2010 is my follow up appt., which at that time I am scheduled to be allowed pureed foods. Until then, I am only to have water, coffee, tea, broth, etc. From what I have been reading on here, everyone's pre-op diet is different - some can eat right up until the day before. My diet was terrible for me. I did lose about 10 more pounds though. Good luck!

You are right we all have different pre-op and post-op diets but most important for you: you followed your docs advise! Congrats on that! It does sound tough! And good luck on your surgery today. Keep us posted!

This per-op-diet thing is scaring me, my surgery is 9/30

which if not the problem, I start back to work tomorrow. I can't see myself working all day and filling like I'm starving, and just come back to work.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
