HELP failed surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello

I need to find some help or advice on what could be done. I was all ready to have the surgery and during my surgery my stomach was punctured. The doctor said my stomach was "bloggy and floppy" and he wouldnt advise having the lap band done.

I want to know if anyone out there in lap band world has every run into this or heard of this happening. I feel like I need a second opinion. I have worked hard now for 3+ years getting all my documentation around and finally was able to be approved by my insurance to have the surgery and now I am being told it wouldnt be advisable.

My surgeon and his team were great, just a weird situation but I really want to have the surgery done and dont want to waste all my progress that I have done.

Words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would find another good surgeon, get a copy of your surgery notes/videos and get a second opinion. It could have been a fluke or the doctor could have been negligent. He/she is never going to say to you "Well I was thinking about my golf game and punctured your stomach by mistake".

The lap band website says "You have/experienced an intraoperative gastric injury, such as a gastric perforation at or near the location of the intended band placement."

I would look into the gastric sleeve, if I ever have to have my band removed that is my backup plan.

I would get a second opinion but not allow another physician to operate. Just tell another doctor about the "boggy floppy" stomach thing and see what he/she recommends. There may be some validity to what the 1st doc said. Keep in mind that everyone is different

Did your doctor require a pre op diet?

The point of the pre op diet is in order to shrink the liver and stomach and help avoid complications like this from happening.

Hey thank you all for your advice. I will probably take my op report to another surgeon and see what they think.

I did go on a 2 week pre-op diet and lost 15 pounds, so I'm not sure that was the problem.

I did not want to go the bypass way, I just am not comfortable with moving things around in the body permanently. All I want is a tool to aid me in my weight loss.

I have heard of the gastric sleeve but my doctor said they are just be now beginning and only one area in Michigan is doing them, but it is still something to look into. Thanks

But thanks again and hopefully I can hear some good news with a second opinion. I will keep posting news. Thanks:smile:

Because you wont need as much follow up care, fills etc., you might consider traveling to a surgeon who specializes in the sleeve if you decide to go that way. I would want someone who had done several hundred before mine. That is how I picked my band Dr, by experience.

Can you consider bypass surgery instead?

Where at in Michigan did you have your surgery? I am from Michigan and in the process of trying to get surgery? I am in the Flint area.

the sleeve is not so new anymore and does not have the complications that go with gastric by pass and is little more evasive than banding.......

I went to Mexico, cheaper especially for those whose insurance won't approve it

hpe that helps

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
