Surgery soon and want a baby!

Recommended Posts

Me and my new husband on 2 1/2 year have been trying to conceive since my tubal reversal in March 2008. No luck. Fertility specialist finds nothing wrong with either of EXCEPT my weight of 282 lbs. She tells me all of the complications that can go wrong at that weight and being preggers. Well, depression and guilt left me at 323 lbs. Finally I decided to have LAP-BAND®® surgery. I've just had my 4th of 7 visits with my surgeon. Only 3 more visits before insurance will approve me. Wish me luck. Down 22 lbs so far with will power and the help of the monthly support groups my surgeon has. Long and short of it. I will be having my band in December and will start IUIs in Jan-Feb. Anyone else had any luck getting pregnant shortly after banding?

I waited one year, but I think I could have done it in about 6 months or so, I was "stable" in my diet, etc. by that time.

In my opinion becoming pregnant that soon might be tough during your transition from pre-band to post band living. Although, you may not become pregnant right away either, so in that case it may not matter. I do hope you do though! I am older and used IVF to get pregnant, 8 weeks right now. My band is playing with me now though, suddenly I feel "tight", must be the hormones or ?? I'm hoping I don't need an unfill. I am not "really tight" anyway, but feel it now!!

Good luck to you!! The band was the best thing I ever did!!

Good luck with your band and getting pregnant...It took my husband and I over a year to become pregnant with the help of fertility drug called Femera. I would suggest trying fertility drugs such as clomid or femera they work wonders..I would also try Pre-seed, ovulation test strips..all those put together helped my husband and I get pregnant..and I swear by them..Good luck and I hope you have good news for all of us here soon!!

I got my band in June of 2009 and was pregnant by May of 2010. I actually had given up on getting pregnant after 6 years of trying. The weight loss was all I needed to get pregnant, it looks like. I was down to goal by the time I got pregnant.

I would definitely wait until you have your new eating habits established and are comfortable with your band. I know my band tightened a bit when I got pregnant and I had to get 1.5cc's removed for the pregnancy.

I'm getting my Band on August 31 and I'm hoping to try to get pregnant after 6 months or so. I've been trying for about a year and I really hope its just the weight making it hard for me to have children. Does anyone have any advice about how long to wait or how it affects the band?

Most doctors recommend a year after placement of the band. The reason is because you need time to be healthy, establish new eating/cooking habits, etc. Not only that, but the weight gain from becoming pregnant can mess with a newly banded person's mind.

Talk to your surgeon first since you're wanting it to happen so quickly.

I am having my band put in at the end of September or early October. I have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years (done IUIs and then IVF worked but miscarried), I know the weight loss is only going to help. My surgeon really wants people to wait 12 months after being banded, which was really hard for me to consider but I figured if this is going to give me the best chance possible to have a healthy pregnancy then I will do it. Good luck, definitely talk to your doctor about this and get their opinions.

I was banded in Dec 09 and got preg in April 10. I was pretty full with my band at 8.5cc in an 11cc band. I did have to have about half taken out when I was 15 weeks because I couldnt eat at all and was becoming dehydrated. This pregnancy has had a lot of complications, but that has not been because of my band.

Thanks so much for all the replies. I totally understand about waiting a year after banding. It's just that I turned 39 on Sunday. I'm afraid if I wait till Dec. to be banded and then wait another year I will have lost my chance at being a mother again. So many decisions. I've actually considered forgetting about getting banded and just go for the baby. I'm 301 pounds and 5'6 so I'm terrible overweight. Being a nurse I'm well aware of the complications that can be involved in being obese and pregnant. UGH!! Patience is not one of my greatest virtues. :)

Jen, have they tested your tubes to make sure they are truly clear? Have they done the HSG? Also, what about the health of your eggs? I too am 39 and unfortunately, getting pregnant with my own eggs is not going to happen. We will have to pursue donor eggs or embryos in order to get pregnant.

Good luck with your journey!

Yep, egg quality is great. Sperm count is awesome. Two HSGs shows my right tube in occluded but the left is healthy and clear. All my labs are perfect. Had a polypectomy 6 months ago, quite a large polyp was removed. So technically I'm supposed to count how long it's been since that procedure. I'm actually on my way to my bariatric surgeons office today. Only two more visits before being banded. I'm sooo scard and nervous about having the band because of fear that I'll have "productive burps" in public. I'm actually terrified of that. Anyone having problems with vomiting in public???

I was banded on December 30th, 2009, and became pregnant in May of 2010. My doctor was a total ass about it, but I did the lapband to try to have a healthy pregnancy. I have endured 4 losses, and I from December to May, I lost 25 pounds. I believe that is EXACTLY what I needed to sustain a healthy baby. It has worked for me finally, and I think if it can work for me, it can work for you! There will be lots of negativity & people who don't agree with it, but you have to do what is right for YOU! That's all that matters. I haven't have any problems yet and I am 17 weeks. I did have to get 3 ccs taken out which put me around 4-5 ccs or so. I just couldn't get any food down after a while. My doctor told me all kinds of horror stories like the stomach perforating through the band, herniating, etc to try to scare me, but again, he is an asshole, so I wouldn't expect anything less of him.

Precious, I had lost all my weight by April. In July I found out I was 13 weeks pregnant. I'm now 22 weeks pregnant. June 10th was my 1 year bandiversary. I think you'll be fine, but I also believe in making sure you have set your new habits in place. That's just me. I'm not trying to be negative, but I think getting you healthy first is the most important thing.

I'd been trying to get pregnant for 6 years and I fully believe it wouldn't have happened without my band. I had given up and I wasn't trying by the time I got pregnant. I was just enjoying my new healthy self.

Shay, congrats on your baby! I've been trying for so long and I'm truly convinced it's just the weight. Has to be. I'm terrified and embarrassed at just the though of being pregnant at my current weight. I'll be 40 years and 4 months old at my year anniversary of being banded. I've seen several replies from ladies my age and older that are getting pregnant fairly easy after the band. I pray that will be me. Baby dust to everyone trying and wish me luck. Only 11 weeks until I'm banded!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
