Hello I was hoping you guys might be able to help me. :]

I'm 16 I'll be 17 in nov, I'm 5'1 so I'm really short and I weight 197lbs. It may not seem like alot compared to some people looking to get this done but I'm sort and my BMI is 37.5. I've tried so many diets even unhealthy ones. I just want to be healthy. I'm now in a size 20 tightly All I seem to fit now is sweats. My biological father is over 300 lbs I don't want to end up like that. My back hurts all the time and my hips are sore and my ankles and knees hurt alot. I can't run for maybe more than 5 minutes.I really think this could change my life so so much. Do you think I might meet the requirements? Thanks for any help you can give me sorry if this is off the topic...:(

Hey Nikkibug, well, I live in the UK, so I'm not sure if the requirements are much different. Plus, I went private.

But I'm pretty certain you'll meet the requirements to have it done :smile2:

If you're feeling uncomfortable, like you said with your hips, ankles and knees hurting I'm sure it will be fine. Plus with your BMI you're in the range to have it done :)

Andy-Penguins, how are you feeling at the moment?

I was banded at 19 :smile2: Congrats penguins for getting banded. Good luck on your journey!

And nikki you will want to call your insurance company (your parent's im assuming) to see what the requirements are for lap band. Many times you need a BMI over 35 with comorbidities or a BMI over 40. Comorbidities are like..diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, joint pain, etc.

It took me three tries to get my insurance to approve me. Don't get discouraged! It will happen eventually.

I am doing great! 10 punds in the first week! =D

Wow! 10lbs, that's really great. Well done

Nikki- The band will make you less hungry once you've had fills put in. You'll get fuller quickly and you'll eat a lot less than you used to. Put you've still got to change what you eat, or it doesn't work, lol.

I'm super new to this and I haven't gotten my lap band surgery yet.

But by the time I go back to school I'm already going to have the surgery. I was wondering if you have any advice on how I can deal with my classmates?

Hey, Nyla

In what way do you mean deal with them? Are you going to tell them you've had the surgery?

If you're talking about telling them, that's entirely up to you. Some people are open and will tell the world, others will tell a close few, some people don't tell a soul. If you don't want to tell them, just explain that you've started to eat healthier and exercise more, as that is what you're really doing; they don't exactly need to know about the band itself.

Good luck when you do get banded!

Hey Nyla, I was only going to tell a few people, but as I started to lose the wieght and people saw me eat less, word started getting around that I had an eating disorder. I would go ahead and tell. Kids are cruel, and jump to conclusions.

I was 18 when I first started looking into the lapband and am going to receive the surgery in the beginning of this summer (2011).

I am excited. I'm 316 lbs, 19, f, and live on the East Coast. If you wanna talk, email me. I love talking to people. :o

I'll talk =]

I'm Latti and im not banded yet. I'm supposed to meet with the surgeon September 30th and i hope my insurance approves me.

I'm 16 turning 17 on October 31 and i weigh 370. My BMI is over 40 and my doctor says I really need it.

Since some of you guys already got it, i'll like to know things about it.

Like does it hurt and do it really help you lose weight personally?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
