1st fill next week...any advice/info???

Recommended Posts

I was banded June 28th and am looking forward to my 1st fill on Aug 13th. I have been thru several of the threads on here looking for advice and/or information that might help me know what to expect. It would be nice to hear from other bandsters out there about their 1st fill experience! Thanks!

Well I am a needle "baby".... :tongue2:

My doc uses a "little pricky needle" to numb the port area.... then he grabs the fill needle - don't look at it... it is pretty big! (During the fill, I just stare at a point on the ceiling) It is over pretty quickly - then they have you take a sip of Water and he sends you on your way. Please please please - stick to liquids for the length of time your doc says... don't rush this part!

Good luck, you will be fine (if I can do it - anyone can!!)

I'm scheduled for Aug 16 (1st fill!). Doc uses a freezing spray before introducing the needle...I definitely will not be watching:ohmy:. He does it under xray and watches the Water pass through for the 1st time. Good luck with yours! I'm sure you will do great:thumbup:

hey, let me tell you. I just got surgery last week and went in for my 1st visit today and the doctor ended up having to go into my port and through my still very sore incesion to withdrawl some liquid that should not of been in there and it was not bad at all!! just a little stinging but that was a little worse because its only been a week out and I was still sore. its really quick and easy! kinda glad I already experienced it and not have to wait 6 weeks

With my fills. I lay down and my dr feels around for the port with her fingers. That's a little uncomfortablr. She's gotta make sure she has the exact port spot. Then takes the needle and puts in..don't look lol. She'll measure how much is in and then injects it in. U get a band aid and wallah! All done. Quick and easy pretty much painless. Then I have to sit in the waiting room and drink a cup of Water to make sure it goes down before I leave. If water doesn't stay down I have to go back in to take some out. If ur dr doesn't ask this of u..ask to do it. Bc I have been too tight and had to get a lil unfill after a fill..so its very convienent to kno then and there instead of getting home and having to call and see when u can go back. Also..yes stick with the phases after ur fill..ur band needs adjustment time

I was banded 6-23-2010 and my 1st fill was 7-21-2010. My doc had me lay down and she felt for my port and then stuck me with the needle. On the 1st fill she wanted to see how much was in my port so she withdrew all and then added it back. Because she had to withdraw it was a little uncomfortable but nothing really. She then had me sipp some Water to be sure it went down. She said I had 5cc's so she only gave me .5 cc and made me wait 2 weeks for another fill. I went back today and it was so easy-just a little prick and all done. Again she only gave me .5cc but I am at 6cc's now. I am going to try and wait 3 weeks this time. Best of luck :-)

I was banded on 6/22. Had my first fill about 3 weeks ago. I'm not scheduled for a second fill until 9/4. The actual fill was easy. But now I think I'm in bandster hell! I don't feel any restriction and I'm hungrier than I should be. It's so frustrating. I refuse to give in to any carb temptations so I'm still eating a lot of Protein to help with the hunger. When I got my fill I had told my doctor that I had started to feel more hungry, but he has a standard protocol that you can only get .4 cc's on your first fill. I just don't think that was enough! UGH!

I had some liquid also when i got out of surgery the doctor had to come in at night that sanme day to take the liquid out because i couldn't hold any liquid down. after he took out the liquid i felt better. It hurt real bad when he was trying to find the port plus my port is beside my belly button and thats where they did my hernia repair the same day.

Do you know why you have to wait that long? I had a fill since the day i got out of the surgery room but the doctor had to take the Fluid out because i couldn't hold any fluids down.

My first fill was 1 month after surgery. I lay down, do a sort of 1/2 sit up and the PA usually withdraws what is there ( I think this is to check that you are not leaking) and then increases the fill when she puts it back. I also drink the cup of Water to check for tightness.

My fills have averaged every other month.

Good Luck.

I'm having my first fill on Aug 12th. I'm not expecting much. I've have a bunch of surgeries and I always watch the needle.

I used to be a phlebotomist...just relax and think about following the orders that come after.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
