3 weeks post op & 1/2 marathon run

OK, Im having my lap band done and July 19th (yea!) and before I knew this date I had signed up to do a 1/2 marathon (13.1miles) on August 1. I will just be starting my pureed food stage on August 1st--so the question is, do you think its possible to do the run? Im just thinking how am I gonna stay adequetly hydrated? I wont be able to drink alot of Water, or eat the carbs needed for energy? Should I just carry water and sip the whole time? I planned on walk/run the marathon. Ive never done a 1/2 marathon before just 5k's. I know, Im a glutten for punishment. So, think I should scratch the race? what are you opinions?

You should be able to drink Water normally 3 weeks post-op! I really dont know much about running and need the carbs for energy, hopefully someone will be able to help you with that question.

You should be fine with the Water though :-) Thats awesome that you can run that much already!

wow, you're brave!!! to be honest though.....I'd be concerned you were pushing it??? I had my band in on July 1. prior to this, I lost about 50 lbs, and much of it was with power walking....like 5 miles a day some times, but at least 3 miles at least 5 x a week....average 18 minute mile...(my highest weight was 366, so I was pretty big, even though close to 6 ft tall)...

so 10 days out, although I feel better, I am still exhausted...I walked two miles today for the second time in a week....took me 45 minutes...really slow for me, not even pushing it with the arms like I normally do....as the days go by I feel a bit better, but it felt like its going to take a long time to get back to where I was....just my story...

by 3 1/2 weeks out though, you'd be on mushies and soft foods, though, right?? that includes things like cream of wheat, oatmeal, and the like, and you could also drink the low cal gatorade...just a thought...I still have some days where I have a hard time getting my Fluid in, and even then, if I drink too fast, it is really uncomfortable, and hiccups hurt ;(

wow, I ran daily even before being banded, honestly the first few weeks I barely had the energy to walk mor than 5 miles....

1 month post op, I am running and biking again. But my stamina is low. Can only run about 2 miles :confused:

What is your reason for wanting to run this particular race? Is it just because you already signed up? it takes the body 6-8 weeks to heal after surgery. Why would you want to risk any injury to yourself for something you don't have to do? Everyone is different of course, but I didn't feel like resuming my previous activity level for several weeks, I just had no energy while just on liquids. Have you discussed this with your surgeon? Most have guidlines for post-op exercise.

The main reason Im still thinking of doing it is cuz I already signed up and Im suppose to do it with a coworker-who doesnt know Im being banded (shes against it). But now Ithink I may not do it, ive waited almost a year to get my band cuz loop holes to go thru with insurance and I definately dont want to mess it up. Ive been doing 5ks- mostly fast walk with jogging as possible and I just think theyre fun. This is a rock-n-roll marathon where they have bands every mile. BUT there is always next yr and maybe Ill be skinny by then and be able to do more running then walking.

I would check with your doctor to see what he/she would advise. As far as getting your carbs in if you do do it, you can take GU. It is a gel like substance many runners use before during and after races. There are a lot of carbs and no chewing required. I use it all the time before I do races because I have a hard time carbing up with Bagels, rice, and Pasta. If you do do it good luck!

Hi

I would scratch the race. Youve come a long way to get this band -- just for you. You will need to focus on simply healing and resting/recovering. Please don't push yourself. The real work comes after the 6 week healing period and you will want to be geared up for that. There will be other 1/2 marathons to be in and by then you will be in great shape and will ENJOY it more I think. Im glad you asked about it here.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
