I've missed all of y'all...but I'm back in business now!

Two weeks ago yesterday I experienced a grand mal seizure and regained consciousness in the hospital. Let me tell you, that's not a fun experience what-so-ever! To add insult to injury I bit through my tongue in 2 places and that hurt like all get out for days! Well, I've had every test they could think of run on me and the best part...no brain tumor or bleeds. The only bad part...the neurologist thinks it was brought on by my rapid weight loss. He thinks my body went through such a shock going from the way I was eating before to how I eat now and it cause the seizure. I'm now on antiseizure medication 4 times a day and trying to get used to that. I told them at work if I nod off for someone to please just wake me up. Also, I am now not allowed to drive and that's a whole new world for me now!!!! Has anyone else experienced this as a result of drastic weight loss? Bound for me to! I told everyone before my surgery that with my luck I'd finally start losing weight and everything would fall apart on me whereas before my surgery, the doctor labeled me a freak of nature because I had nothing wrong with me when I should have. Hopefully the medication will keep me seizure free cause that's one ride I don't care to take again! Hopefully now I'll be back on schedule and can stay awake long enough to read posts on here cause I have missed y'all so much!

Wow Becky! How awful! I'm assuming your doc ran blood tests to check out your nutritional health. I know you are eating and you shouldn't be malnourished like some GP folks...but even they don't usually have grand mal siezures like that out of the blue, do they? How odd and scary!!!

Take care and keep us posted on your progress. Will you be able to go off the meds in the future and begin to drive again? Wow girl, I'm worried about you!!! Stay in touch. So glad you are back in business!!

Oh Becky, I'm so sorry to hear of your ordeal. You sound as though you are handling everything with your usual postive attitude, God Bless You.

I haven't heard of anyone having seizures due to rapid weight loss, but I do know someone who was losing weight rapidly and he ended up with atrial fibrilation because of it. That's a problem with the heart beating out of control at an irregular pattern.

It's funny, because I was just thinking about you the other day and was wondering why you hadn't been posting. Little did I know that you were having such serious problems.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the doctors can get to the bottom of this and know what actually caused it.

Take Care,

Cindy

HUGS!

Talk about a body stubbornly holding on to the past.... I think yours threw a massive temper tantrum! Do follow up on the nutrition thing... I don't know what causes seizures - but chemical imbalances have been known to do lots of horrid things.

Take care!

((hugs, again))

My dad has grand mal seizures, and my oldest daughter has had 2. My dad is on medication because thats the only way to control them. From what I've found out through going through this with my daughter (who had her first seizure while on an exchange trip to Germany when she was 12) is that anyone can have a seizure if they reach their "trigger" point. We went through tons of tests, and with both of her seizures she had been awake for extended amounts of time and eating crap. So our neurologist has just let her know that she has to get sleep. She isn't someone that can go to a sleepover eat candy and drink cokes all evening and not sleep. (we try to make sure she is always in bed by 12. Did the doctors say how long you would have to be on the medication? Did you have any other things surrounding your seizure that was out of the norm? Did they have you wear the electrodes for an extended amount of time, like over 24 hours to register your normal brainwave actions? We had all of these things done because we were so afraid of our daughter being labeled eppilleptic. The medications can have side effects of their own. Since this was your one and only siezure I'm suprised they have started you on medication. Most people who have a siezure...never have another. Its only a worry when a person has multiple seizures from what our neuroligist told us. My dad hates changing doctors now because they always think they know a better combination of meds to control his seizures.....they change medications...which usually triggers a seizure and then he has to give up his driving liscense for a year. Did your doc say weather or not if you are seizure free for a specific amount of time if you can drive again?

Sorry you are going through all of this, it can be very scarey I know.

Melissa

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
