Hi - 24 day pre-op diet here!

I did medifast - packets of shitty food. oatmeal and Soup, totaling 500-600 calories a day.

When I'd go out to eat with people, I'd order Water or iced tea - no food. I'd go home after and eat 1 cup of Soup.< /p>

It was hell. It sucked. But, I lost 25 pounds and my liver was in prime position for surgery!

You'll get through it - and in a year from now, you'll barely remember how horrible it was because you'll be too busy enjoying your new body!

I had a 3 week pre-op diet...Mine was completely a liquid diet...3-5 Protein Shakes a day only...I had 3-4 on a good day...it was hard but hey you might as well start this lifestyle change in a drastic way...from here on out you need to eat differently.

My doctor didn't require a pre-op diet but since my BMI was so high I decided to do a 3-week all-liquid pre-op diet to ensure that my liver was perfect for surgery. My self-inflicted diet consisted of 3 Protein Shakes (8oz beverage with Isopure Protein powder), a 4oz serving of sugarfree Jello pudding (made with several scoops of protein powder), and chicken broth (if I ever felt hungry). In total, my daily intake was around 600 calories, 108g protein, and 20g carbs. I also averaged 8-10 cups of Water. I lost 25lbs. I probably would have lost more, but my period started during the last week. I was one of the lucky ones who felt great and never got hungry... everyone else says that by day 5 the hunger wears off... Good luck!

The hunger does get better by day 4 or 5 and you will be amazed at the energy and clear headedness you will feel. It shrinks your liver so you are ready for the surgery. My was very easy because I did a month of preop dieting and lost 23 pounds. It is not easy, but you will be glad you did it. You do not want to have withdrawal from carbonation, caffeine, sugar and carbs all at the same time as your surgery!

My surgeon requires a 2 week pro-op diet, it consists of 2-3 Protein shakes a day and one Protein meak(chicken breast) with green leafy veggies. I started it a vew days early after realizing I had gained 20#'s since my consult in January.

I was obviously having too many goodbye meals. I know how important it is for the liver to be in a good place and consistancy. I don't want my doc to cancel my surgery.

So pre-op appt is this tuesday, and suregery is May 3rd.

Isopure is the only premade drink I have been able to tolerate. Hoping the hunger goes away soon!!

Compared to some of the pre-ops, I've had it pretty easy. My surgeon had me on a low-carb, lean-protein diet for the last month and, starting today, Clear Liquids only for four days. I can't complain, but, hey, I'll do it anyway! I am amusing myself by chanting, "cute, compact liver..." to distract myself. Now, off to my sugarfree Jello and chicken broth!:)

My pre-surgery is tomorrow and my surgery on May 3rd. Tomorrow is the start of my 2 week liquid diet. Thanks for all the advise. Every time I feel hungry I will just think of why it's so important to do this and how this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

You and I seem to be on the same schedule, I am praying for a May 3rd surgery date, I will find out Wed for sure. I am starting my pre-op diet tomorrow and hoping to loose some weight before surgery as well. Gotta get my liver smaller so the surgery will be successful. Good luck to you~:)

This dietary phase is not easy, but consider it the last time you will ever be on a diet. If you follow the plan closely enough, your body will go into ketosis, within 3-4 days your hunger will be under control. If the diet is broken, your appetite does return. Clients of mine if still hungry after the initial 3 days I add more Protein into their plan and they are pretty happy.

Good luck.

All for a good cause to shrink the liver done to make your surgery safer.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
