I got the results of my sleep study. Although my apnea has worsened (mild to moderate) with the increased weight, it's still not bad enough for a CPAP. I do/did snore mild to loudly. I had no periodic limb movements; so my restless leg medication is doing it's job. The report did make the specific recommendation that I lose weight; so that should help my case. I faxed the report to Dr. Kuwada's office on Thursday.

I spoke with Cathy Head, ANP last week, and she said they'd mail my information to the insurance once they received the results of the sleep study. So it should go out this week :)

Let the waiting begin....

You can have my two front teeth, all I want for Christmas is a surgery date :)

I bet you'll get it! It's good you don't have to use a machine. I haven't used mine for a while I need to get a new mask. It is a real drag.

I called on Tues. and Cathy said they hadn't received my psych eval yet, but said she would check into it. She called me back yesterday (Wed.), and said they had gotten my eval, but my blood work wasn't recent enough. I went today for blood work - a 2 hour wait at the hospital and 8 tubes of blood! Cathy did say the lab work ususally comes back next day. Maybe my paperwork will go to the insurance tomorrow?

We also talked about going ahead with my endoscopy. I have acid reflux; so surgery or not, there's a diagnosis to give to the insurance company.

I'm also encouraged by hearing of another UHC insured (thru the same employer) with BMI below 40 that got approved for WLS.

My blood work came back OK, which isn't surprising to me. My bad cholesterol is a little high, but not extremely. As soon as Dr. Kuwada can get the letter dictated, it will go to the insurance. Unfortunately, his nurse practitioner didn't give any indication how long that might take.

Moving right along in the mean time, my endoscopy is scheduled for Tues., Dec. 6th, 6 a.m. at CMC.

I TOTALLY AGREE......my stuff was sent to the insurance company today and I am SO impatient to get a decision.

Hey Judith, even if I get a decision tomorrow, I may have to wait for a date. Dr. Kuwada more recently moved here from Chicago, and is in the process of being recertified by Inamed. He won't schedule me until he has enough surgeries for Inamed to come proxy his technique.

Karen -- Thankfully I don't have those issues at all. My doctor's surgery schedule is pretty open they tell me so if I get an insurance approval I will be able to schedule a surgery date fairly quickly. They do the WLS only on Tuesdays I'm told.

I got the name, phone# and reference# at my insurance company so I will be calling Sue tomorrow to check on it!

Did you have your approval yet judith? I'm just curious. What stage are you in.

I wanted to share a quick story my paper work was sent to UHC on a Thursday and I got my approval - verbally when i called them for my approval. So. If your with UHC it should be a breeze depending on how much documentation they needed. Good Luck

Karen - It's gonna happen, soon. I think you need to get some more recruits there so they can have enough patients to get this proxy done.

Jennifer, you know I was trying to recruit you, but didn't quite make it in time :)

No Karen, the dr's office didn't make it in time. I was all set to switch out and I didn't get a timely return call. I guess it's meant to be. There's thousands of people at work, we can find some so you get a date soon.

Have you called your insurance? I didn't receive any documentation yet, but the dr's office did.

I called my insurance; they have yet to receive my letter. I've left a voice message with my surgeon's office asking for an update. I don't mean to be impatient, but cannot wait to hear something!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
