Well today is the start of my new life. I was banded by dr. Sheih this morning in Fort Myers. My day started at 530am and everything went pretty smooth. Dr. discovered hernia while performing the surgery so that was fixed. Out of surgery at 11am back home by 7pm. Had no idea what to expect. Pretty sore in my shoulders and a little bit in my stomach. I was told to only drink 1 ounce of liquid per hour and that includes my medication. I feel like i am still thirsty. Did alot of laps in the hospital so i could get out of there asap!!!! Walking really seems to help with the soreness. Anyway looking forward to being able to drink more tommorow!!!!!

Congratulations to you!! I was banded on 4/7 - my Dr. found a hernia too  They didn't tell me to drink 1 oz every hour. I even had a cup of Soup for dinner. I went back to work today and walked for 20 min during lunch. Feeling really good so far.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the reply. It's a very strange feeling. I am alot more sore than i thought i would be as far as the incisions. Woke up last night after an hour of sleeping and couldnt go back to bed. I am also trying to feel my way through making sure i drink enough but also not too much if that makes sense at all. Went for a nice walk around the block this morning i was able to eat a couple of spoons full of Jello (not a big fan) drank 4 ounces of Protein and i am drinking 4-6 ounces of Water every hour. Any advice??

congrats on the band scott. I was banded 3/19/10. I felt sore but the pain meds they gave me worked to keep me able to move during the first few days, the soreness goes away pretty quickly.

walking is really a big key to moving the gas out of your body. The reason you're more sore than some is due to them fixing your hernia. It takes a little more time for you to feel "normal" post-surgery.

As far as being thirsty more than your surgeon suggests you drink, I think you'll find if you phone him, that having a sugar-free freeze pop or ice chips to keep you from feeling so thirsty between allowable liquid amounts will be acceptable.

Good luck

I was banded April 2. Last night I slept uninterrupted for 7 hours.. I am so happy! It was until day 10 that I felt normal again. But I didn't have a hernia repair on top of the lapband.

This two week liquid phase is no fun. I am surprised that your liquid diet is so restricted. Especially with Fluid intake.

Do you have a nutritionist? I spoke with mine a few times post op.. she said that we could do phone contact .

Good luck! It gets better!! I have had 5 other abdominal surgeries , in hindsite this one was the easiest..

Congratulations Scott and to others recently banded. I got banded on Monday with a hiatal hernia repair. I spent the night and came home yesterday. The step II mushies are going well so far. The weirdest thing is not feeling or really desiring food so much. Do others feel this way after surgery?

One thing is, I am really sore!

I was banded on Monday also. I'm just a little sore but have lots of gas but the gas pains are too bad. If i could just get rid of that i would be ok.

How long dod you all take off from work?

:scared2:I am still sore as can be. I to have not desire to eat at all. I am doing ok with the Water. You are on a mushy diet 2 days after surgery? WOW!!! I am supposed to be on Clear Liquids for a week and then full liquids for 2 weeks. Since i am full of gas still i am assuming thats why i have no appetite at all. Atleast the broth i am eating tastes very good. i am not a Jello fan at all. Can't wait until i graduate to the sugar free puddings/ YUMMY

ShanesO1- Congrats on your band. I have seen a lot of people post about trying the GAS-X strips. Maybe that could help?

Scott, I thought I would be on Clear Liquids longer as well, but I had the surgery in the late afternoon on Monday and had my first clear liquids for Breakfast. They said since I did well with Breakfast, I was moved on to mushies for lunch which was like a peachy applesauce thing and cream of chicken Soup. I got a little nauseated, but did well with it overall. Today I had a high Protein oatmeal packet with milk and that did well. Could you maybe ask to see if they would let you have some mushies? I would think you would get hungry!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
