Off Topic- Did anyone watch Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution show last night?

Recommended Posts

I just had to tell about this awesome show I saw last night called Jamie Oliver's food Revolution. Jamie is a chef from Britain, and he has come to Huntington, WV (so called the fattest city in the world) to try to help the schools feed the children healthy food not the processed crap that almost EVERY school in America feeds their children. One part of the show, Jamie went in to a class to see if the children knew the names of common veggies. They didn't even know what a potato or Tomato was.

I thought it was a great show, and it really opened my eyes to what food I eat.

Are you serious that they didn't know what a potato or a Tomato is? I'm only 22 years old and I knew what a tomato was when I was like 4 years old. I used to eat them like apples.

Yep, they were like 1st graders I think. It comes on ABC if anyone wants to look it up. It's a pretty neat show.

I thought it was really good as well. Anyone who knows anything about sound nutrition knows that school lunches are the worse things out there. I don't care how healthy they say they are! Friday, the HS I teach at had motzarella cheese sticks (you got 5) a medicine cup of Tomato sauce, canned green Beans, and a "salad" which is a quarter cup of iceburg lettuce and nothing else as well as your choice of milk and some strawberies that were in a frozen cup and all runny--looked like ice cream topping and it was loaded with high fructose corn syrup--strawberries was the fifth ingredient. One of the girls at work bought school lunch for a few weeks straight, and she put on over 10 pounds, the weight came off when she stopped eating the unhealthy foods. Everything is processed.

OP wasn't the chicken nugget experiment gross? I could not believe how under educated the children in that school were--sorry basic use of a dull knife and fork as well as not knowing what veggies were. I about fell off my chair when the head cook said the kids could only eat with spoons because they were too young to use other utensils. My kids were eating with dull knives and forks by the time they were three. The principal was a bit out of touch as well.

Those "cooks" were so rude to him, and they didn't see anything wrong with what they were feeding the children. I guess the "cooks" were mad that they actually had to cook instead of sticking everything in the oven or whatever.

I know that experiment was gross. I can't believe those kids would still eat that after watching it be made.

I guess it does start with the parents, but our GOVERNMENT should know that what they are regulating in the schools is not doing nothing but hurting the children.

They sure seemed put off by having to cook real food that had nutritional value.

I'm pretty sure the gov't guidelines are created by many lobbiests for certain areas of the food industry. Such a shame especially when so many children are at or below the poverty level in many public schools and are relying on school Breakfast and lunch to sustain them. Those meals could be a way of teaching sound nutriton, it is a shame they are not.

I saw the show and was thankful that someone is concerned enough to try and make a difference. I am an elementary school teacher. I hate what our kids are served for lunch. It is a neverchanging menu.

Monday: chicken nuggets

Tuesday: taco boat

Wednesday: chili mac

Thursday: pizza

Friday: cheeseburgers

The veggies are canned and dumped into a large pan to heat. The kids throw 90% of the veggies in the trash.

There are days when I do not have time to make my lunch, but I refuse to eat anything my school serves. I always keep Protein powder on hand for days like that.

I hope the show picks up a huge following. We really need to change our eating habits.

The "chicken nugget" experiment was unbelievable.

I called my husband in to see the family at the hospital. He couldn't believe the little girl was four!

Considering the amount of money we pay in school taxes and now with a first lady taking up the cause of childhood obesity you'd think this would be a no-brainer. I have to wonder if there's any tie-in with the lower socio-economic level in Huntington. It would be interesting to see the lunch offerings in private schools around the US. Just clicked on the link to our local elementary school's menu...everyday they have a choice of fruit or fruit juice, and cold Cereal for Breakfast with revolving choices of pop tarts, doughnut holes, muffins, french toast sticks or breakfast pizza. Lunch - what a surprise...chicken nuggets, Peanut Butter & fluff, mac & cheese with a pretzel, pizza...only occasionally do they service veggies or yogurt. Jeez - I don't even have kids, but I wouldn't feed this crap to my five-year-old niece!

What was really sad was the attitude of the disk jockey and the bitchy(and obese) kitchen staff.

After watching that tv show and reviewing my children's lunch menu, I have decided to stop allowing them to buy their lunch.

Since starting this journey for myself (& my family) to eat healthier, I do not want to "sabatoge" my efforts by allowing them to buy "crap" for lunch on a daily basis.

I really hope that this show "opens" the eyes of our schools and government and that changes are made.

This is an excellent program, I highly recommend it.

Not learning to use a knife and fork is awful also.

I love Jamie, he's very popular here in Australia. His style of cooking really appeals to me too - rustic stuff that you chuck in your weber (kettle BBQ) and serve up on a big platter to your friends and family. His food Revolution would be an eye opener for many!

To be honest, the move Supersize Me didnt put me off letting my kids have the occasional McDonalds so much - what I nearly barfed my dinner up over was the muck that serves for food in American schools! I was awestruck by the orange floppy pizza! We dont have school canteens like that here, you bring your own lunch or you have a "lunch order" where the canteen puts it together and brings it to the classroom where the kids eat. thank god my kids school has a healthy food policy and they cant buy anything like pizza, coke and other softdrinks are banned in our schools and we dont have vending machines in them either.

However - it hasnt done much good. Australia is one of the fattest nations on earth, just like the US, and our kids are getting fatter and fatter each year. If they dont get that stuff at school, they just buy it elsewhere, even kids who have a healthy family diet like mine do.

I dont like pizza much at all but I'm glad Australian pizza doesnt have orange cheese, and the slice stays horizontal when you hold it to bite, lol!

Lack of exercise is as much of a problem I think.

I really enjoyed the show- hope it catches on and some real changes are made. The usda guidlines are just ridiculous. No wonder we have a nation full of obese children. I am a former teacher and was always horrified at the lunches. I wasn't banded yet and have to admit to eating them once in a while. I agree that it means the cooks have to actually cook. Also maybe some more money needs to be put towards providing healthy lunches for children.

I am very supportive of what he is trying to do, and I hope that it has an impact.

The garbage that they serve our kids in school is disgusting.

A couple of years ago, when My son was in high School, he forgot the HEALTHY lunch that he made for himself every day. He would not even TOUCH anything they served in the cafeteria and the vending machines were all full of garbage - candy, soda, etc.

So, he left campus to walk to the supermarket on the corner to pick up something GOOD to eat. On the way BACK to the school (He was carrying a bag of Apples and Bananas) he was arrested by LAPD for truancy, and given a ticket that ultimately cost him $700.

Something really needs to change.

This program caused a revolution when he did a version here in the UK. It had such a effect that the Prime Minister was forced to meet him at downing street to talk his ideas and demands through.

It just grew and grew and politians from all political parties we forced to jump on board and back his demands.

School meals were completely changed throughout the UK. Out went the high fat processed garbage and it came healthy meal replacments.

Now there has since been a back-lash, some kids used to burger, pizza and fries refused to stay for meals and their reck-less parents blamed the schools for not providing what the kids want.

Generally though it has been a great success. I hope it has the same effect in the US.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
