Hello -

My two week pre-op diet starts on Thursday, and all that I can think about is what I am going to eat until then. I have mentally made a list of all my favorite pig-out places and want so desperately to hit them all before I start on my shakes.

I know that I am prepared for the band life. I have done all my research, attended support meetings, and lurked here on this site for the last couple of months. I know that I will be fine when I start on the shakes, get banded, and afterward.....it is just these next two days that the little demon in my brain is telling me that I will miss out on volume eating and that I have to get it in now.

Anyone experience this? Am I the only one that is experiencing the sad thought that I won't have the wonderful mental comfort of gorging on something totally delicious?

Just last second cold feet I guess. I am ready for this experience.....just going through a little mental breakdown today!

i think its normal to have that feeling i had it and i just enjoyed my eating. im not sure if i pigged out i just ate whatever i wanted. lol maybe that is pigging out.

i can honestly say i do miss eating large quantities of food especially my favorites (chpis) BUT....im loving my results and the help of my band so bye bye buffets.

I felt the same way. My surgeon did not require any pre-op diet.. so I did eat whatever I wanted all the way up to the day before my surgery.

Some might disagree with that.. Many will tell you to start eating right, so that you can get used to "what is to come" And it is probably good advice! But I did NOT do that.

Do what you feel is right.

I had Outback Steakhouse for my last supper. A filet with mashed potatoes, greenbeans. I ate the bread, and the salad too. It was AWESOME!

I am doing really good now.. Losing weight, excercising! All of that.. But I am going to be honest with you.. I miss eating a nice big meal.

Thank you so much for your responses! I know that I am just feeling a little nervous about the two week shake diet....and maybe feeling a little overwhelmed that it is actually going to happen.

The band is totally the right decision for me, but is still a little daunting no matter how much I have prepared for this.

I'm having it BIG TIME! I am on a pre-op diet but it's SugarBusters!...I've lost 6 lbs in a week...but I am still really MISSING food a lot! I think I will prolly go out Thurs night (seeing as though my surgery is this Friday) and eat a good meal...a "legal" meal...but a nice BIG one!

I have always loved eating...whenever I meet up with my friends...it's usually at a restaurant...so that is definately gonna be an ajustment for me!

I did that too. I hit Red Lobster and ate til I was too full. That sure reminded me why I'm having the surgery!

I don't have my surgery date quite yet (should be soon) but I'm already thinking about the final meal. Mine is not necessarily bad for me, but won't be totally possible afterward.

I LOVE sushi rolls. Each piece is meant to be eaten with one bite...you can't take a small bite of a roll, it falls apart. I'll do it it small bites later, but probably not at a sushi restaurant, it would be embarrassing eating it that way! So my "last supper" will be at a The Sushi House sitting at the sushi bar and enjoying eating a roll the way it is meant to be eaten.

However, it will be so great after the band...I'm going to be a much cheaper date (take-out) for my husband since I won't be able to eat nearly the quantity of sushi I can now - it's amazingly expensive.:)

I love your idea of a special night out final meal. I think that I am going to do that also!

I think that mine will be our favorite family pizza restaurant. I have read that for most people traditional pizza is impossible to pass through their pouch without getting stuck. Most everything else I really enjoy seems to be a non-bread or non-Pasta type of food. I don't feel desperate to pack in all of those other items since hopefully they will be something that I can enjoy again (of course in moderation!) once I heal and am allowed solids again.

Pizza it is. Whew...I feel better now just reading your posts. Now that I have a plan I am not as desperate as I was this morning. Thanks for all your comments and support. Crisis over!

I can still do rolls, well sometimes. :)

At least I can do the smaller rolls. The larger rolls I do have to bite and let fall apart. What a mess, but still yummy.

Another option is nigiri sushi. You can take smaller bites of that.

As to last supper syndrome...It is hard not to fall into it, but in reality, you will be able to eat most of your favorites again. Just in smaller doses. If you have a long time between being notified of your surgery date and begining your pre-op diet, you can put on a lot of weight that you will just need to take off.

I didn't get much of a chance to fall into the trap. I found out I was approved around the third week of Jan. On Feb 1, I started my pre-op. I think it worked in my favor.

The day before my liquid diet started I drove 40 miles for a hamburger. Not just any hamburger but one of the best in Texas, eventually when I am at goal I will probably eat (part of) another one but I knew it would probably be a year or so before I could so I took advantage of it while I was able.

"last supper syndrome" is totally normal and probably most everyone pre-band had it.

I personally decided to try the lifstyle without the band to prove to myself I was ready. I can tell you that by doing that took the power away from the food and gave it back to me!!

It was the HARDEST thing I ever did, but one of the most rewarding. The band really is a tool, I had to prove to myself that I could do it without it. Was NOT easy, but very gratifying! Just my .02

i had this issue, too. i had numerous "last meals". a friend of mine had this as well. only... she got her band over a year ago and at that time the surgeon (we have the same surgeon) wasn't making people do a pre op diet. well, i found out at my nutrition class yesterday that the reason our surgeon started making people do a two week pre op diet is because too many people were having huge "last meals" up to the minute of minute the day before surgery. they wanted to get it all in before they couldn't have it anymore. and they were eating so much they were enlarging their lives and that was making surgery more difficult for both the surgeon and the patient. much more risky. so now i've had to do the pre op diet. it's been super hard but i understand the need for this after the explanation i got yesterday. don't feel bad. you are not alone.

You are definately not alone - I have been going thru the same thing - though I did not wait to get my surgery date to start pigging out on my "last supper". I have been eating obscenely since I had my original consult with my surgeon (December) and throughout the entire presurgical proccess!

I am scheduled to be banded on 3/31 - so I am planning on starting my preop diet on 3/22. Hopefully that will be enough time to reverse whatever damage I may have done.

I am in the San Diego are, too! The more people you have, the more variety you can order. :ohmy:

What's your favorite Sushi place? We like to go to Todo Sushi (used to be Meiki's) on Caroll Canyon Road off I-15. In La Mesa, Banbu Sushi.

Ok, I'll stop, I am making myself hungry. :thumbup:

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
