Hello from downunder!

Recommended Posts

I have only just found this forum- so cool to have one just for the over 60's!

I had my lap band installed on 17th Feb, so I am 16 days post op and doing fine. I have 2 weeks still to go on liquids, which were started 2 weeks before surgery.(3rd Feb.)When I finally come off them , I will have been 5 weeks on liquids.I actually don't mind too much, except before the op, I was allowed the occasional meal bar, and I miss the chewing. With the liquid diet, my weight loss has been steady and quite dramatic, I have lost over 50lbs in those 5 weeks.Now- do I mind that? NOPE!

I would be interested to know what mushies/purees, everyone in here began with....I seem to be at a loss to come up with anything tasty. I have a savoury tooth, so I am drinking mainly Soups because the shakes are so sweet.But..mushies? I did hear that eggs are a bit difficult for most folks......any ideas?

Teeli :(

Hi !!! I thought you were another Australian with the Downunder Heading ... :smile2:

Anyway welcome to the 60+ gang...

I am on Mushies now and love it ..its a bit like eating baby food...

I have whatever the family is having for dinne (small amout) and blend it all in the blender..

so far I have had a small piece of chicken baked potato and sweet potato blended with gravy ....and last night I had blended up spaghetti Bol. with whole meal Pasta ... :w00t: looks gross but tasts nice after watery soups....

I was 2 weeks on liquids prio the op then a week after I was doing so well was able to start the mushies ..no pain no sickness..just felt sore from the operation...

Best of Luck ..

P.S yes my dietitain said scrambled eggs may be a problem but I could have a runny poached egg and if I were to try scrambled eggs make sure they are sloppy (wet) not cooked dry...(haven`t gone there yet )...

Hi there Marion! Well, we kiwis also term ourselves downunderers, after all we are even more downunderer than our Aussie neighbours! LOL..Next stop Antarctica!

I am glad you are doing so well...and enjoying your mushie time. I guess I will enjoy it also- when I get to it.But, 5 weeks on liquids has been good for me.

Yeah, I don't think I will be trying those eggs anytime soon- I had heard they are pretty difficult.I keep getting this mental flash of that leetle leetle passage thru the band...and what happens when a lump of food blocks it!or a skin from a Tomato or apple.CRIPES! I'll try baby food first I think, like Farex and purreed dinners, just add extra Protein Powder to them.

Did you have shoulder tip pain? I still have it, even 16 days afterwards. It isn't as bad as it was, but it still is mighty unpleasant.:w00t: Thanks for answering, and giving me some ideas for mushies. :smile2:

:smile2: Well then Go the downunder Gang...

Nope I didn`t get any should tip pain ...no problems at all except sore tummy from the Op..if not for that I wouldn`t know anything had been done ... :w00t:

I am love being able to have Porridge or Weetbix for breakie now it keeps you feeling full for quite a while..

Hows the weight did you loose much pre Op..?? as you can see by my ticker bar I have only lost 9Kg but as long as its going down I am happy...

Have a great weekend..Chat later Marion

Hi.... Lucky you! No shoulder tip pain! I wish mine would go!But I had no stomach pain, so maybe it evens out, lolol.

Pre-op I lost 8kg.Since the op I have lost another 10..that's averaging out at 5kgs per week now. I am thriled. I began at 136 and I am now 118.Mind you, this is on the surgeons scales which are on deep carpet. My own scales and my GP's scales show I have lost a lot more, even starting at 136 kgs, they show me at 112 now.( which is 24kgs)

I am still on liquids, but like I say, I could stay on them quite happily. Heaps of energy, at least in the mornings, flagging a bit by late afternoon.

I have made sure I have stuff like Farex and weetbix in the pantry for when I start the second stage of the programme.

How do you get your ticker bar? It looks like a fun thing to have.:smile2:

Thanks for the link. I went there and made one, but now I don't know what to do with it! How to get it here? It probably won't work here anyway- no matter what I do, I am listed as Male... all my data is 0 ...and I can not change the USA doctor's name or even delete it.I have written to management twice but haven't heard anything. It's a bit discouraging really...........:smile2:

Some other ideas for mushies could be cottage cheese, yogurts, oatmeal, Beans with a bit of shredded cheese melted on them, mashed potatoes or yams, or, as Majj suggested, blended just about "anything". I never had any problem with scrambled eggs or poached eggs- and I liked a dab of cottage cheeses with a poached egg over it and a bit of sale..hmmmm - it's 7am here and I haven't had Breakfast yet..think i just figured out my plan for breakfast..:w00t:

Morena Narion! I have uploaded a pic, changed my gender status, added all my details and submitted THREE times. It appears fine but as soon as I return to the forum as such, nothing has changed. I am quite used to filling out profiles etc as I am active in many online forums, but I can't make any headway with this one. And still no word from Admin.....:smile2:

Morena Sandy! Thank you for your suggestions. I shall certainly try them out. I cheated last night and made up a batch of minced meat and vegetables which I then whizzed up into a puree and froze in half cup pots. I had one for dinner. I didn't like it...arghhhhhhhh...I had no trouble with it, no pain , no discomfort, but somehow I didn't feel as full as I do with the liquids- weird eh.

I think maybe I will wait the week out and try again, this time with poached or scrambled eggs.< /strong> :smile2:

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
