I was in surgery 2 hours

Recommended Posts

I had my gastric band on February 11th - and felt very bad on the 12th, and much better today. I am still wondering - isn't the operation meant to be one hour only? I went in about 4:30pm and didn't wake up until 6:30pm. The doctors said it went well, but does the length of the operation mean there is something they're not telling me? I have 2 little scars on either side of my stomach, left and right, that they didn't put dressings on, and then two big dressings on wounds in the middle. I haven't taken the dressings off yet of course but the size of the dressings makes me think I will have two bigger scars as well as the two little ones. I thought there was only meant to be one bigger-size scar. Did anything go wrong?

I have 4 little holes and a 2 inch one where they put the port. I don't think you need to worry that the 2 hours time period means something is wrong. BUT it is your body so ASK the doctor. The surgery is usually an hour but that doesn't mean you wake up instantly.

Thank you. I'll ask them. I'm three pounds lighter than I was 2 days ago! I just can't wait until the dressings are off and the pain all gone!

Are you sure you were in surgery the whole 2 hours? I went in at 8 and woke up at 10, but I was in the recovery room for over an hour before I woke up.

The surgery probably took an hour or less, and the rest of the time was in recovery. If you think there may have been a problem, ask. If anything unusual occurred, they probably would've told whoever was with you.

I understand your concerns. The best way to have them allayed is to ask the doctor.

Most of the time away from your room is spent in the recovery room. For most patients, time in the recovery room is a foggy memory at best! My surgery started around 1:30, and I didn't get to my room until around 4:30. The delay didn't have anything to do with surgical complications; they were waiting for someone to be discharged and my room to be cleaned!

The surgery itself took about 45 minutes. I was awake and aware for much of the recovery room time--dozing, but lucid when awake---and was aware of the discussion about my room readiness, etc.

I would wager that most of the time you spent away from your room was in recovery, too--sleeping. But ask! I've never known a surgeon to withhold important intraoperative information from patients.

ETA: I have 5 incisions; nothing went wrong. It's just my doctor's surgical approach.

Do you have a reason to believe something went wrong, or are you just surprised by how cruddy you feel? I don't think there's a way, really, to be prepared for postop discomfort. We all know we're going to have it, but it's just so much different when we DO have it.

In your shoes, I'd try to reframe my thinking. Instead of focusing on the what's-wrong side of the coin, I'd flip it. You've had abdominal surgery, and are doing astoundingly well. You're home, you're recuperating, and you're on the way to a much healthier life!

I was in surgery 45 minutes and recovery for about 5 hours...couldn't stop dry heaving, it was lovely. I also have 5 incisions, 3 tiny, 2 about 1.5-2 inches, just how my surgeon does it. But yes, if you're concerned ask, or wait and request a copy of your operative report, it will have the start and finish times on it.

My husband was in surgery for 2 hours. I was in the waiting room and they gave me a privacy number for him. They had a screen in the waiting room with patients privacy number and a color band across their number. Green, operating room. Pink, recovery room and Purple, post surgery (taken to room). His number was green was 2 whole hours. The doctor came to talk to me and told me that he was being wheeled in the recovery room and he did wonderful! They put a mesh patch over his port to help it from not moving around in the future. He would be more sore while healing, but he believes it is worth it in the long run. There was absolutely no problem with the surgery, just that it was a 2 hour surgery. Recovery, however was only 45 minutes and he looked absolutely great by the time I saw him 1 hour exactly after surgery. He is 2 days out and still very, very sore and not hungry. No apetite whatsoever. Hope that's normal.

Thank you for your reply! Yes, I think it must be normal to have low appetite afterwards, as I don't feel too much like eating, but I think he will need to eat to get the Proteins etc that he needs. I have had a cream of Tomato Soup today - that was very taste, and very appropriate for the liquid diet post-op. Maybe you can try that.

I was in surgery for 3 hours, have 7 incisions, and was in recovery for 1.5 hours. i did a bit of dry heaving after i got to my room, so bad i thought my port was gonna rip thru my skin for schnizzle.. i had numerous past surgeries that had left a lot of adhesions and scar tissue for my doc to get thru so he decided to clean it all up for me! Probably a bit more painful now for me but in the long run it for the best!! my doc immediately explained my length in the or, and i didnt even realize the time till it was 5 hours out - so prob just the anesthesia keeping me loopy lol!

Congrats on the weight lost! I am 3 wks post surgery (1/25) and the first 2 weeks have been a breeze for me. (Other that being allergic to the glue they used for sealing. Hurt & itch beyond belief!!) Unfortunately, now I am in the mush stage and actually I can eat most things and larger amounts without any problem. I am having a hard time controlling myself. BUT I will somehow because I do not want to fail at this. I get my first fill March 4.

My doctor told me my surgery took 11 minutes from the first incision to closing the port incision. I was probably in the operating room for close to an hour total and in recovery for several hours, at least two of which I don't really remember. The PA from my doctor's office told me she came to see me in recovery and we had a conversation but I have no recollection of it at all.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
