How long should you wait for your fill to cooperate?

Recommended Posts

I was banded March 23, 2009. My first adjustment was in July after having no restriction the months following surgery. I was filled to 2cc and had some restriction. My surgeon and I decided not to be too aggressive because my esophagus had expanded to nearly 3x its regular size. Apparently, I had not been following any warning signs and was "overeating the band". I wasn't chewing properly and still taking huge gulps of fluids. With the 2cc restriction I listened to my body and the sensation of satisfaction rather than fullness and by November, I was back in for another fill. My doc went up 1.5cc and based on the fluoroscopy and my sensation. In addition, my esophagus was practically back to its normal shape, but not at 100%. I was fine for about 18 hours but by the next day I couldn't PB and I slimed more than I could drink. I couldn't sip even a teaspoon of Water. By day 4 I was dehydrated, weak, dizzy, pissed and frantic! It was a Sunday when I finally called my doc. I drove 3 1/2 hrs to NY where he happened to be doing emergency surgery - all the way from the poconos where I live. He removed an entire cc and I drank... I drank like I've never drank in my life. I had lost over 15 lbs in those 4 days just in fluids alone. I kept drinking and then eating and eating. The holidays were upon us and I just kept eating back the 15+ lbs.

Ok, so here I am. I had another adjustment done exactly 1 week ago. I'm at 4cc now, which surprises me because I was stuck and miserable with less than that. The first 2 days were fine. I took it slowly as I always do after adjustments, and it seemed to be ok. However, once again, come Saturday... 1 lousy tsp of fluid- warm, cold, hot, tepid, clear... it didn't matter. I couldn't tolerate it. At first I thought it was because my tea had milk. My sliming was out of control. I was heaving all day. By Sunday I was back to small sips of clears. By Monday I was sipping broth and by Tuedsay, small sips of creamed Soups... but not much! 1/2 cup in an hour with having to reheat it several times. On Wednesday I was able to have warm and cold liquids, but tightened up by the evening. Today is Thursday. I woke up and started my day with clear hot tea. I couldn't tolerated it and started to heave. I tried cold apple juice. More sliming and heaving. It is now Thursday night and I have not had anything to drink at all and the sensation of dehydration is beginning to kick in. Mind you, I have not had any solid foods at all and I have lost 15 lbs. I was so freaked out about the last episode so I came here to read blogs and have read over and over again that everyone is different and the way everyone adjusts to fills is different.

How much longer should I wait before I allow myself and my body to get used to the new fill? I don't know if its normal to wait this long or longer, but DAMN am I thirsty!!!

Do not wait to call your surgeon. This does not sound normal and you should be able to drink liquids. Please call without waiting too long. You need to have some liquids and nourishment.

I had my second (01/28/2010) adjustment and now at 6cc. I'm drinking Water and Soup and Jello but i only can take a very small amount and feel it in my chest each time. is this normal? How long does this effect last?

Surgeon: Dr. Nick Gabriel of St. Catherine's of Sienna Medical Center, Smithtown, NY

Banded: 02/02/09

Hi, dream-

Even that seems too tight to me. You should be able to eat comfortable in very small increments, like 1/2-3/4 cups, chewing thoroughly of course. A month seems to be a long time to feel it in your chest with just fluids. I'm jealous! Today I was only able to tolerate 1/4 cup of fluids with lots of sliming. I'm calling the office on Monday first thing to go back to unfill a little

You should always be able to drink fluids, maybe not guzzle them, but a least drink normally. I got too tight once and just Water sat for hours right after a fill. The swelling did go down but I eventually got an unfill anyway. If you can't drink get some taken out now, don't wait.

Hi, Bonnie. You are absolutely right. Today is actually a good day. It is now noon. I woke up today and the first thing I do is try to sip some hot tea. This morning I let it go because I was heaving liquids I could only consume 1 teaspoon at a time. This morning I waited until I was absolutely starving and I had and entire 1/2 cup of tea over 45 minutes. WOOHOO! My dh is under the impression that this is a good sign and maybe I don't need the unfill. I'm trying to explain to him that the ability to eat should not be a crap shoot lol. I should be able to eat comfortably every day, any meal and in small portions. Am I right or wrong? I shouldn't have to worry if my food is hot or cold or tepid. I can't afford to wonder how my band is going to treat me from day to day. I am going for an unfill this week and hopefully it will be enough for me to get fluids down. It's not a good feeling to be obsessed about drinking all day. It's just as bad as how I was prior to being banded and obsessing about dieting. Thank you for the advice!

You have no idea how glad I am that he is coming back. Tonight, actually... I am on the road first thing in the morning to get unfilled. I can't chat with you on fb. Can you believe NO ONE but my husband, and 2 coworkers know about my surgery? It's my best kept secret!!! I'm also glad that we have the same dr in common! I haven't been able to connect with anyone else who uses him (and mean Sheryl! lol... j/k).

I'm sooo happy for you! It sounds like your recovery is happening very slowly but surely! I hadn't been able to go to the gym for a week and a half because I was too weak from not being able to drink. I don't think I answered your question before. This is my third fill. My first one was uneventful, as I thought they all would be. I hope he doesn't take out much, but I will deal if he does. I've lost 20 lbs these last 2 week; that's the only good thing in all this. But I feel sick and run down and irritable and it's also messing with my cycle and my attitude :). Oh, my poor family! MY KINGDOM FOR AN Optifast Protein SHAKE!!!. I went to shop rite today and they are having a big sale on anything drinkable... I bought tons of diet snapples and sobe Water and waters to bathe my mouth in after the unfill. How pathetic am I???

If you cannot eat or drink...you need an unfill. You can damage your stomach and it is unhealthy not to be able to take nourishment. Call your doctors and get at least a little Fluid taken out.

I just had my 3rd fill and believe I'm at my sweet spot. I can drink...any temperature....slowly, no gulping. I can eat slowly and small amounts. I do get a little tighter in the am and have to drink coffee slowly, but I can drink.

You need to be able to drink and eat. Get an unfill. Call your doctors. He/she may only need to take out .5 cc, but you shouldn't be hurting yourselves this way.

Hi, Ocotillo!

Excellent advice. It's sad to me. The first two days following my fill I thought I hit my sweet spot. I had to follow clears for 48 hours and I was doing quite well but when day 3 hit and incorporated a splash of milk in my tea and the tea didn't sit well at all, I knew it wasn't the right restriction. I was hoping over the week that it would improve. Trust me, I am not trying to deliberately injure myself. I have come too far to lose my common sense. Though I did have a few moments of feeling defeated. I will be seeing my doctor first thing in the morning. Hopefully I will find my sweet spot then!

Thank you!

Hey Dream, you emailed me you never had any problems with the 2 fills you had. Could you be fibbing. Looks like your not the only one with overfill problems from dr. Gabriel. Anyway I'm still happy your happy but honesty is the best policy. Didn't your mom teach you that!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
