Almost 4 weeks since surgery...Can I have a freakin drink??

Recommended Posts

I'm with you on the coffee--decaf is no substitute! Blarf. And I don't understand the rationale for allowing it if fully-leaded coffee is forbidden. According to my doctor, it's the acids in coffee, more than the caffeine, that contribute to stomach issues. Why Decaf is considered better, I have no idea.

Some say that caffeine increases appetite, but it has the exact opposite effect on me. In my misspent youth, I lived on Tab and cigarettes--nicotine + caffeine seemed the perfect appetite-squelching combo. (Terribly health-promoting, too, of course!)

That said, I decaffed myself preop and haven't yet returned to it. I only drank 1 cup of coffee a day--but needed to get off the massive amount of diet soda I was drinking daily; too tough on a new little pouch. Giving up that lifelong addiction was tough. (But my wallet is way happier.)

I'm sort of testing myself to see how long I can last before I return to the coffee, though. That one little cup....

I just happened upon this somewhat testy thread a month late. I have not had a soda since surgery, but do drink coffee every day usually in the form of a latte with a scoop of Protein added. I was told it was not recommended early on because as the previous poster said it increases appetite in some (not so with me either), it can cause us to retain Fluid and also we may not drink all the Water we should. I don't think it is thought to cause damage to the band in any way. It has not had any ill effects on my weightloss and I have been drinking it from the beginning.

I did not know we should not drink beer or maybe I did and forgot. I am not a drinker of alcohol normally anyway, but did have a few bottles while on vacation a couple weeks ago. I assume it is due to the similar to soda type carbonation issue? If it could cause band issues I will probably not indulge in the future!

I must say that I eat most anything I want and never gain weight anymore. I was just thinking about it today..how wonderful it is and how I once envied people who seemed to be able to eat anything and never gain weight. I now realize in most cases it was because overall they did not eat a lot and they ate smaller portions. I do naturally eat healthy, but do not hesitate to have a dessert, slice of pizza, candy, or anything else one might consider off limits, on occasion.

Morning, everyone,

I remember when I first met with my surgeon, we talked about our shared love of good wine...grief, I think we have about 3 cases of the stuff in our basement! My husband and I have had wonderful times going to wineries in various parts of the country and seeing what they have to offer. We've even taken wine tasting classes, so we can at least APPEAR intelligent when we're at the tasting bars, lol! Met some nice people, too.

Anyway, my surgeon said, "It's a good thing, then, that you're choosing the Band- eventually, you'll be able to have small amounts of wine from time to time. It will affect you more quickly in much smaller amounts than you're used to, though, so you'll have to be prepared for that."

Everything is a choice, as others have said. Although I enjoy wine, if I had been told that I could never drink again in exchange for prolonging my life and regaining good health, it would definitely not be a difficult decision for me not to drink. I'm not going to sit in judgement, though, for those who make other choices.

Just a small suggestion, for what it's worth...you might want to think about trying alcohol at home the first time round, so that you'll experience whatever new effects you may have in a private environment. Then, if you decide to go forward and drink in public, you'll at least know what to expect.

I hope it works out for you!

Best, Chris

There are very few Perfect Lap Band Patients that comply with 100% of the Surgeon and Nutritionalists recommendations. We all will cheat and test new limits from time to time. Look at John Daly the PGA Golfer. Got banded in Feb 09`, 2 pack a day cigarette smoker, (still smokes/ actually, never stopped) and former beer guzzler, (now sips slowly on a pint occasionally) and slugs down Carbonated Diet Coke like a Junkie and still has lost over 110 lbs in just a year. I know thats pushing the pouch to the limit but a sip of soda or beer now and then should not put anyones efforts into a death spiral.

I had 2 glasses of wine 9 days post-op. I did not feel any different than I did drinking 2 glasses of wine before the band. I am only 17 days post-op now, and what I have found is that I can't drink like I use to or I don't know if maybe it is that I am scared to overdrink so I stop at 1 or 2 glasses or wine. I do have to say, I will not have beer again, I did not spend all this money and go through this surgery, to risk streching my pouch.

Giving up drinking soda, I sip some after letting it go flat overnight once in a while, is not a problem with me either. I DO miss my Seltzer Water terribly though. But, that said, never being able to to enjoy sipping another hand crafted ale or beer again, (I`m not talking about Bud Light or Miller Light or Coors Light) would have been probably a Deal Breaker. Its like saying, never taste another slice of pizza again....forgetaboutit!

It is, indeed, that kind of thinking that brings many people to the point of needing Weight Loss Surgery. Again....it's the accumulation of small, poor choices in eating that help to contribute to the predicament that we are all in.

There are certain things you need to eat to live....alchohol is one of those things you do NOT need. And it can hurt you in a number of ways.

Also, consider the very real idea that after you have had one or two drinks, your will-power does tend to diminish, if not vanish entirely. This could lead to more drinks, and then the snacking that can often accompany a buzz.

This is all about making changes. And giving up the ingestion of totally hollow calories is a small price to pay for robust health. As far as leading "normal lives", just consider what state of "normal" you are in now, having to have an artificial device implanted inside of you to keep you from eating too much. Really....how "normal" is that?

It is that version of "normal" that put us all in the position that we are in today. I think you need to re-think your concept of what "normal" is.

You need to lighten up!

Its true, all Alcoholic beverages are simply (empty calories) that are not needed, that said, some of us obese or formally obese folks enjoyed a beer, glass of wine or cocktail once in a while. If alcoholism is not a problem, I don`t see the need for a life style to totally eliminate (all) of one`s past eating and drinking pleasures! Never a slice of pizza, a chicken Wing, a bite or two of Chinese food, a spoon or two of Ice Cream, a nibble of Dark chocolate? Anyone have Dr. Kevorkian`s ph#?

Phil, your post cracks me up and is oh so true!

I'm on a bowling league (I know it's very Rosanne). our first game was when I was 4 weeks post op. I asked my surgeon about bowling and he said just to take it easy and pay attention to my body but did mention no beer. And I asked if cranberry and vodka was okay and he said JUST ONE drink would be fine but don't go crazy. I sipped the drink and 2 glasses of Water during our 3 games. I didn't feel deprived and fit right in with my friends.

I think I miss using a straw more than anything. I don't feel deprived with out soda or beer but to have some iced tea without a straw? That's been my biggest miss.

I asked my doc about the straw and he said "if it was no problem, go ahead and use it" I drink at least one, if now two venti iced coffees a day thru a straw and have no problem. Ask your doc next time you see him.

BTW, Vodka and sugar free red bull is great too!!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
