hi there. i have been on hypothyroid meds for like at least 7 years. i too have struggled with weight and my primary recommended i look into vsg. i know some people develop GERD but as sleeve is the less invasive, that is the best option for many people, myself included. you can always revise if you have to, but many people seem to thrive after vsg though each case is unique in its own way. i've been back and forth but i think this is the best option for me and im sticking to my july 20 vsg date. good luck to you!

I'm 4 days out and just now feeling like the pain is manageable. I agree with the new stomach sensations. My tum is always gurgly and rumbly now, which I feel like I used to associate with hunger. So I'm feeling like I'm always hungry, even though I'm 100% sure that I'm not. It's quite annoying. Did anyone else go through that a few days after surgery? Did it go away? I hate feeling like I'm hungry constantly!

I'm with you! the first two days were so painful i had instant regrets but the nurses were so amazing. i had to stay 2 and a half days in the hospital. now im just about two weeks out and down about 20 lbs. its WILD. i have to remind myself that this takes so much time to adjust. i still dont know how to differentiate the sensations in my new stomach! its so weird but i too have no real cravings which is such a welcome relief! we got this!

I'm sorry to hear that... how quickly did you move from liquid to soft foods? Sometimes, some people need a little more time with liquid before moving forward.
Another thing that really helped was taking really small bites. I used baby silverware for a while, taking REALLY small bites, and setting a timer for 3 minutes in between each bite (after chewing REALLY thoroughly). It was tedious and boring, but it kept me from hurting a lot.
Is it only when you eat or is it all the time? Did your doctor give you a PPE (like pantoprazole or something to help with acid)?
If it's causing a lot of distress to the point where you can't eat, contact your surgeon or nutritionist, as well. They should have some advice to help you, or can give you an idea of what's going on to cause that.
I hope you feel better soon.

You might do well to see a psychologist to help deal with this so you don't go off track

It is not unusual to miss old eating habits but you need to replace them with other habits that occupy both your hands (mostly) and/or mind. Puzzles, going for a walk, soak in the bath, cleaning out cupboards, calling a friend or family member, knitting, arts or craft etc etc.
ESG doesn't remove the part of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone, so you will need to deal with this by making sure you eating sufficient Protein and high fibre foods (when you are able), and once you are able solid foods that help you feel restriction.
You should be following your post op food guidelines, they are very important as you don't want to hinder the healing of the suture sites, otherwise your sutures will not be able to do there job, they will loosen.
If you are really struggling touch base with your dietician or nutritionist, ask for some tips. If you need to, also consider a counsellor to help you deal with the old habits and any emotional eating you may have.
I can't stress any of the above enough, I've seen as many ESG fail as there has been some success, you want and need to be on the side of success.

People use the word "friend" to describe a relationship with another person too handily. A true friend will support you even if they don't totally understand everything you do. We need a new term for those people who like spending time with you but disappear when the going gets tough....maybe "Social buddies"? Sounds like your "friend" is a social buddy instead. A true friend wouldn't worry about what you can and cannot eat, instead they should be proud of you that you are trying to take control of your life and health! Good luck and remember you have true friends to commiserate with here!

I believe that not everyone needs to know about this kind of private thing. its not about shame but privacy. what we are going through is very intense both physically and emotionally/mentally. i've decided only to two trusted nonjudgemental friends and my immediate family. i don't need the extra commentary or stress. people can get very strange when the "fat" friend is no longer so. it happens all the time, not to mention people in our society feel so entitled to comment on other people's bodies, we owe them nothing. its not their business. we need to focus on ourselves. that is my take and i had gone back and forth for a while. its sad, in a way, but that why sites like this, communities of people in the same boat, are so important! we have each other! my surgery is next monday and im nervous but mostly happy to get this done so i can be healthier and get back to doing things i love!
