How long do you need to prioritise protein?
My two cents. The mantra "protein first" is because your stomach restriction is tight for the first few months. For many of us it's a struggle to get food/shakes in and hit your dietitians protein goal (60 to 100 grams) You can consume more food as you get further out from surgery. Hitting your protein goal is normal forever. It's surprisingly not as much effort as the beginning of surgery. At this phase it's not so much "protein first" because you can consistently hit your protein goal with vegetables and other foods.

For many of us weight loss slows down as we progress out from surgery. It's ok if its slow. Can I ask how much weight loss in a month?- One Year Out: Support, Motivation, and Tough Love
This is the continued work with bariatrics. Recognising and confronting old behaviors. Finding strategies to get back into weight loss mode. Great advice from the above posts. Snacking: keep healthy options on hand get rid of temptations Eating larger meals at night: Larger meals can still stay within your calories for the day. With your protein, load up on salad, steamed or roasted veggies. The office and food holidays: Many people will appreciate healthy options. (I'm sure there are others watching their weight) Veggie and fruit tray, meat and cheese platter, Hummus dip, Spicy edamame, Salt n vinegar cucumber slices, Chicken or turkey meatballs. deviled eggs. My favorite is my dieticians white chilli. My dietitians bariatric site for some inspiration: http://insidekarenskitchen.com/bariatric-friendly-recipes/- Fitness trackers vs Google Pixel 2/3
My son just bought me a garmin fitrunner 35 for my 50th b day. Still figuring all the functions out. So far it's been helpful. Connects with other apps. Including myfitness pal.- How long dis it take to see your stomach go down
You have no control of where your body places fat when you gain weight. You also have no control over where it comes off as you lose it. It will balance out with time.- Bodyfat / BMI Question
Simple and specific *giggle*?- One Year Out: Support, Motivation, and Tough Love
Give yourself credit for all the weight lost. Amazing work! Stalls and gains can mess with your head. I had a 16 pound gain and worked it back down. I understand the fear of gain and losing control. No reason to beat yourself down. You have a small gain and you are ready to take control again. you said " I will fall into my old pattern of guilt, depriving myself, guilt, treating myself, guilt, eating all day, guilt, guilt, guilt. But here I am, three pounds above my lowest post op weight, guilty" Behavior change may be working on how you are talking to yourself. Change the negative statements you tell yourself about your weight. Be your biggest cheerleader. A therapist may be a good option to overcome these repeated patterns. Wishing you the best, Jenn- I miss food so much so so much ???
Once you have surgery there is no going back. This is the new life we chose. Old coping skills are something to work on. Therapy is a good option. I hope you can work out this feeling and move forward. Surgery is life changing. The things you overcome in therapy can be a gift out of this process. We are all a work in progress.- Tailoring workout advice requested!
- Can anyone recommend how to start weight training?
@Kat410 I love how you put this " if I had just lost the weight and stayed mushy, squishy and weak I really don't think I would have been as satisfied with the new life I have"- Lost too much weight
You are a healthy BMI of 19 at 5'4" 52Kg 114 pounds. A BMI of 18 is underweight. Do what you have to do to be healthy. Are you working with a dietician to get your weight to where you want it to be?- Foot 911: What kind of shoes and socks do you wear?
Pain and injury free walking/running. It's worth it to invest in your shoes. I need a good arch and stability. I started with asics. I invested in Brooks and Hoka one one. Some videos on fitting shoes.- Do you have a Treat, what is it, and how often.
My two cents. People comment on posts out of concern. I think it's important to see all sides and opinions. Choose what is useful and ignore anything that may offend you. The bariatricpal community has seen it all. You will see people posting I can eat whatever I want and lose weight. I ate XYZ and I am gaining what do I do now. People asking permission to eat XYZ, Others admit they have gone off plan and are looking to get back on track. I heard from a friend of a friend that you can eat a potato chip diet...--Ugh Posters will give you perspective and things to think about. Not all of us will come across as warm and fuzzy.- Weight training first not cardio
What is crazy cardio? I don't think anyone is running marathons in the first few months after surgery.- Great Article/Blog Post: Deadly Mistakes With WLS Than Can Ruin Your Life
Love this! So true... Behavior changes and taking responsibility are key to your success. Thanks for the post.- Do you feel more attractive?
@Kay07 You should feel good about yourself. Eating healthy, 5K and rocking high heels. (1) So yeah I am working on that. Did any of you struggle with reevaluating your relationship with yourself? Do you view yourself as a project in the works? This transformation is more than physical. I used my time at the gym or walking to process the mental side of WLS. I had to let go of all the negative messages from others and myself about my weight. I had to process how differently people are simply because of weight loss. I found that I was an adrenaline junkie love a challenge. I am also the same core person with the same values. Interesting that many of us share the experience of not knowing how to take compliments. I was used to being invisible to the opposite sex. It's a bit unnerving when suddenly they are showing attraction. It takes time to get used to. Its ok to feel awkward my compliment scale appropriate - Say thank you and move on. hilarious - They'll make great NSV. Please share them inappropriate /creepy - Depending on the situation I confront them. Know that it's ok to feel good about the way you look and feel. Have fun and experiment with clothing you want to wear. Find your own style. Life is short. Rock your bad@ss self. We are all a work in progress. Never stop. Keep growing and changing in life. (2) For those of you who hit goal or are maintaining, did you decide that because you felt like you hit it, or because you hit the number you set? How long did it take you to feel comfortable in your new skin? I pulled my goal weight of 140 out of thin air. I worked my program to get to reach it and beyond. Nothing magic, it was the work put in. First year after goal. I hid from mirrors and cameras for years. I had to work on seeing myself smaller. I would still move around people as if I was larger and didnt want my hip to bump into them.*laughing* Just a bunch of small things like that. After the first year my mind caught up with the weight loss. - Crazy Progress Pics!!! Almost 5 months out!
