Aries331 got a reaction from insul817 in Week 3 post-op, want to eat!
All of a sudden I want to eat so badly. I'm still on pureed diet phase, so I will not push it, but this urge is overwhelming. Words of encouragement appreciated.

The jury is still out. I’m only 16 days post op, and it’s been a difficult recovery so far.

I’m almost 2 weeks out and absolutely no regrets! I’m down 14 lbs just since surgery, down 23 lbs over all!

Nov 20. Down 20 lbs. I read another post about eating enough and I may be under eating. I should be on pureed foods, but really only have those a few times per week. I am satisfied with 3 Premier Protein shakes a day. I think I need to move on and add more foods....

Mine is 60-80 grams of Protein per day for life. Right now I’m doing 3 meals and 1 shake a day split up as Snacks. So I’m getting 65-75 grams a day.

You should definitely mix some real food in. I had yogurt, eggs, and puréed tuna and chicken salad, along with the shakes to meet my Protein goal. Just thought I’d share some things I tried.

Hey, I'm having surgery on Monday. Any other November surgeries out there? I need to find a Facebook group to join but I have been off of FB for two years. Thanks!

Hi Davida, I had my surgery on Nov 15 and just got home from hospital last night. I spiked a fever this morning, but I’m doing much better now. My next few days will be filled with learning how to eat (or should I say drink), and figure out all these new processes. I would love to find a pal here, someone I can encourage and be encouraged by and grow with (or should I saw shrink with)!!!

I’m 8 days post op and having such a hard time getting the liquids in. I don’t mind Water at all. But everything else just tastes so nasty to me! I’m honestly averaging about 200 calories a day. And one day I did get up to 450.
Mentally I KNOW I need to force myself to get more calories in, but when I try I just gag over the flavor of everything.
I saw somewhere someone said they eat 4 servings of greek yogurt a day to meet their goals. And I think I’ll have to try that because greek yogurt is the least repulsive of things, although it still has a gross after taste.

Yes, that’s absolutely right! I wish this other lady saw this post earlier in the week that had the same issue only eating 500cals but left the forum after being berated and accused of lying... the body goes into starvation mode and needs food to boost the metabolism - this is basic fitness knowledge and I’m surprised so many don’t realise that your body needs fuel to build muscle and burn fat or you will just lose muscle and end up a skinny fat person.

Had an interesting talk with my dietitian today. She is hell bent that we work up to 1000-1200 calories per day as soon as possible. I'm on week two...she doesn't expect me to get there until week five or so, but encourages me to try.
I asked, Why not take advantage of the natural desire to eat fewer calories and....you know....lose a little more weight?
And what she said kinda floored me.
She said that prolonged low calorie diets will switch your metabolism to a starvation mode where body processes are slowed, energy is conserved and *gasp* YOU STOP LOSING WEIGHT. Worse, you can lower your metabolic set point to sluggish starvation levels.
She goes...I know, I know...seems counterproductive, doesn't it? After a lifetime of being heavy, someone's telling you that you have to eat more to lose weight...but it's true! 60-80g of Protien, and 1000-1200 calories. Both are equally important if you want to lose weight and set yourself up for a healthy metabolism later. Balance your diet. Protein absolutely, but fruits, veggies, healthy fats, and Healthy low glycemic complex carbs, too. Balance is important for good metabolism for life. You can lose weight fast on all Protein, but you can create a healthy metabolism that lasts a lifetime with balance.
She also said that diets under 1000 calories are correlated with nutritional deficiency, bone loss, more hair loss, and muscle loss. Ouch.
So yeah....eat Bubbalah...eat.... Seems absolutely unreal.
On the plus side, I found a comfort food I absolutely love that's legal:
Cocoa wheats thinned with chocolate Premier Protien. Slides down easy...and the energy lasts.

I’m 10 weeks out and I definitely feel hungry often now. It does change based on how hydrated I am and how bored or stressed I am. I do feel full easily after eating though which is nice, but not at all like you imagine. On days I exercise , I feel less hunger. The key for me is benefiber in my drinks and staying hydrated. But the good thing is; the hunger isn’t at all like it was before surgery , and if I’m busy, I can go all day without food, although that’s not good because you feel starved after.. I munch often or drink Water to prevent major hunger..

I'm only one week post op and feeling the same! I don't have genuine hunger but the desire to eat is so overwhelming. I still have to be a wife and mom and cooking/being around the smell of food is brutal.

It's all a mental game. I just try to focus on the fact that the benefits of this "new" life will far exceed the deliciousness of food.

How much longer until you are on regular food?

Stay strong! Anyone who says surgery is the easy way out has NO idea how crazy this ride is!

I just need to vent for a moment. Nearly everyone I've told about this surgery thinks they have some way to relate. What is it with people? If they've dieted, they think they know the same issues, or had another surgery, or ate baby food.
Has anyone else had this? I'm glad I limited who I've told. This is annoying.

Same story for me. I have some hard lumps under my scars that I hope soften or reduce. I was RNY on 11/20/17. It's going great. 0 nausea.

Meaning that any unflavored Protein Powder will have the taste of the power itself. No vanilla or chocolate to mask the taste.

Flavorless would mean you could add it to something and not know it is there. In my opinion, that doesn't exist.

They used the glue on me too. I had Gastric bypass though. I have about six scars. The smaller ones got lighter and aren't noticeable at all, it's just the bigger one that got a little dark. The lighter ones faded after a few months.

I haven't really given my scars much thought because they don't bother me. I just think the scars are another story added to my body. As far as what I've heard that helps with scars are Vitamin E.

Aries331 reacted to BigViffer in Flavor-free protein powders
I don't have a recommendation unfortunately, I just wanted to reply with some information. There is a huge difference between flavor free and unflavored. I never found a Protein powder that was worth having that was also free of some sort of flavor. Unflavored protein powder means just that - nothing added to mask the taste. Flavor free means no taste whatsoever. The only thing that comes to mind in that camp would be genpro which is snake oil and should be trashed. Of course, after their latest lawsuit loss, I don't know if they will be selling it much longer.
The only way to use the unflavored powder is to add it to something with very strong flavors. Any curry Soups would be good, chicken noodle not so much.

Aries331 reacted to crocodoxie in Straws
I accidentally used a straw, not thinking. I had a cup of Water at a diner. Small sips. I was like, OMG! A STRAW, what did I do? It ended up not bothering me. What I did find, is when I was having trouble getting in enough fluids, when I added a straw and took small sips, I drank more. It is advocated to avoid straws. I've made the choice that because 1. they don't bother me, I'm not having issues, 2. I take small sips, 3. I tend to get in more fluids....so, I use them.
If your surgeon's office says don't use them, follow your surgeon's suggestion. Everybody has such a different experience of what will or what won't bother them. I read the boards and see how different we are with what we can or can't tolerate. At 50, I take in as much information as I can, then I parse it out and figure out what works for ME.
As for extra air, i always pace for ten minutes after a meal, to help counter any air issues, but straw wise, it's ended being a non-issue for me. THIS IS A PERSONAL CHOICE FOR ME. Honestly, at the end of the day, you need to do what works for your journey, and what will help you on your path to success. Best of luck!

I agree - Premier Protein is the best and available at costco or on Amazon, amongst other places, and also inexpensive. Comes pre-made or in powder.< br>
Body fortress is another really good one. It's available at Wal-Mart & target that I've found.

I'm so mad at myself; and disappointed. 3 days post-surgery and I actually took tiny bites of food. I'm lucky I didn't hurt myself. I don't feel great today, but don't think I did any damaged and will not be testing myself again.

The reason I post this confession here is that thickgirl5683 is waiting a year to try a sweet and I couldn't make it 3 days without trying a taste of food. You are inspiring and reminding me what I should be doing.

I just got a really big one done this summer, but I am definitely going to get one once I hit goal Any excuse for a new tat lol but I'm thinking I'll do some sort of minimalist roman numeral thing, like HW-GW (so CCC-CLX)under one of my wrist tattoos.
Please share pics of tats or tat ideas! I love seeing the artwork. This is the one I got done this summer. Watercolor style, shows my journey on where I've lived: Cardinal is state bird of VA and IL, Oriole is state bird of MD, and a cherry blossom branch for my career in DC. Got it when I moved back home to IL
