My wife and are both post op and prior to were heavy pop drinkers. Both if us being recovering alcoholics we have resigned to treating pop like alcohol. Not taking a sip is the best way to avoid reforming bad habits. Good luck. You can do it.

Bad habits are hard to break but you can. I am 4 months post surgery. I loved diet soda prior to surgery. For whatever reason I have had a sip here or there but it doesn't taste the same. I could careless about it now. I love Crystal light, unsweetened tea and diet lemonade from chic fil la!

I'm 15 months out and I have not had any carbonation at all since July of 2016. That's a year and a half ago. The only time I miss it is when we are standing in the gas station and my family has all grabbed their sodas and I am standing at the case trying to find something I really want and not just something I'm settling for. If I'm at home or in a restaurant, it's unsweetened tea. If I am in the convenience store...I try to look for Vitamin Water Zero or Bai ( Panama Peach and Costa Rica Clementine) is a fav! You'll eventually make your own decisions about carbonation and you'll determine whether or not it is something you can tolerate.
Personally, I LOVED diet soda pre-op and the sodium in carbonated drinks went a long way in keeping me bloated and heavy. I'd rather not know if I can tolerate it and continue to live my life without it.

I made a decision to stay away from ice cream. 😥
I have noticed in my month since surgery, that the less sweet stuff I eat, when I do (like a sweet Protein drink) I find the sweetness overbearing. For me I think I am better trained to not want sweet, trying to break the sweetness addiction.
Protein bars - there are some great ones. Quest bars ar really good - I took another member’s advice, so cut one into small chunks and put in a plastic bag, and bring out a bit as a treat during the day...

See I’m craving sweet stuff. And it wasn’t the reason I got the surgery either. My genetics made my metabolism really slow. I eat pretty healthy and exercised 6 days a week. I just want ice cream.

In your situation with the struggle to gain and get in enough calories, I would ask a dietician if they would recommend upping your carbs. Carbs like bread, crackers, chips, etc go down easily and are higher calorie. Since you are a special situation and need more calories, I think I would consider asking my dietician if that would be ok to try.

I could swear that it was me writing your post -- except I had my surgery on 4/10 and I'm a band to bypass revision. Nevertheless, like you, I too wonder if I had the surgery. I've not experienced dumping (admittedly I haven't eaten any sweets or pushed any envelopes), I feel good, I seem to be able to eat anything, etc. And I've only lost 30 lbs. to date -- so you're doing better than I am. If I lost almost 70 lbs. like you, I'd be jumping for joy. I don't mean to make you feel badly about your complaining about your weight loss. It's just that my weight loss is so slow and I don't understand what's up with that. Someone? Anyone?

It's fine. Do what you have to do to get the food down, just don't overdo it.

I am not a mother, but I am a daughter. My mother grew up being criticized by her mother/my grandmother. My mom was always feeling targeted and bullied because she wasn't as slender or pretty as my aunt.
So, when my mother had children she went the opposite. She never said anything about my weight or my food choices. I was allowed to eat whatever whenever I wanted. My mother gained weight herself and ended up close to 400 lb. So, I never had a good role model.
From my perspective you making changes may hurt temporarily while she feels left behind, but you have several years to help her/show her good food habits.
Involve her in meal planning (including figuring out the nutrients) and grocery shopping and cooking. Have her help you weigh out and portion yours and your husband's food. She can then choose her portion.
I believe children 10 and over can join weight watchers with a doctor's note. Find out if she would be interested in going and offer to go with her.
I will keep you and your family in my thoughts. This isn't easy.
But taking care of yourself and being healthy are fabulous things for your daughter to witness.
(My mother is now about 250. After she retired 12 years ago she began to take her diabetes seriously and has lost the weight slowly but consistently. My blood sugar and A1C were getting high and after watching her deal with diabetes...this was a big reason I went for the surgey.)

    Hi ALL:)
I am 9 months out and have lost 99 lbs!!! My question is I have hit a stall at 177 lbs. (down from 275). I'm looking at what I'm eating and wondering if I may be eating too many carbs. For example, I do eat a couple handfuls of pretzels like every other day, and sometimes a piece of toast. Mainly though my diet consists of veggies and fruit, string cheese, and deli slices, greek yogurt, light Soups. Any ideas? Have a great day!!!

Just a side note. While I was reading the other posts it was said that they have a hard time eating due to no hunger. I can say with all honesty. food does not HOLD THE SAME FEELINGS as before my RNY. It is almost a chore to eat. As was said nothing sounds or taste good. Since my RNY I have had a super duper smeller and taster. But the down side of the taster is I taste metal most of the time or bitter stuff!! food is NOT that IMPORTANT NOW> In fact I would rather drink my coffee with my added Protein. LOL My faily has had a very hard time adjusting to this. But I would NOT change this for NOTHING!! It is all worth it totally!!

Yes, it is very bittersweet that is for sure! It's so nice to have the 'clothes are too big' problem! I didn't save any of my smaller sizes. All my clothes were a 16 pre op size. So now I'm just starting to fit into 10s and 12s so I really do have to buy clothes because I work in a professional office and cannot wear leggins with big shirts. I guess it's a good problem to have!

Sounds like a little buyers remorse. It will pass. Try to keep a positive attitude and do what your surgeon and nutritionist tell you to do. I think that everyone gets that at one time or another.

My nutritionists wanted me to stop drinking pre-op so I haven't had a drink since August. I'm one month post-op and I don't plan on drinking anymore period.
I don't like the taste of wine, liquor, etc. and I can no longer have the things I used to mix my drinks with anyway so I don't see the point in drinking any more.
