rumpole6 got a reaction from GingerDiane in Hernia repair during surgery
Hmmm. I had a hiatal hernia diagnosed during the barium swallow test and the PA told me the probably won't do anything about it. That kind of bothered me because now that I know about it I want it fixed. Another thing they told me is that I am a slow swallower and its another thing they don't do anything about.
I am telling you, I didn't think I was all that healthy before I started this journey but all these little picayune things they discovered make me feel even sicker.
    Bring on the sleeve!

I drink one shake unless I think I will miss my Protein goal. If I am thinking I will miss my protein goal I will have a 2nd shake for one of my Snacks. That doesn't happen too often.

    Hi all.
I am now in the dreaded 3 week stall and I am trying really hard not to freak out about it because it is sort of expected, at least out here in "patient land". My Dr.Never mentioned it.
The question is do you think that we elders lose slower than the youngsters? I am 4 weeks post op, I am in a stall and I have only lost 9 lbs since surgery, at least according to my scale. (The Drs scale reads heavier, but that is due to randon times of day, fully dressed vs buck naked, etc) If you include pre-op diet, I have lost a more respectable 21 lbs and over all I am happy with that, but I guess I was expecting more.
I feel like I am eating nothing getting in my 70 gs of Protein and 7-900 cals/day.

rumpole6 reacted to Jen - a work in progress in October 2014 sleevers check in please!
Hey everyone! I just wanted to keep in touch with everyone on the postop boards now that most of us are done and in a few more days the remainder of us October sleevers will be done as well.
How is everyone doing? Feel free to share any problems, suggestions, recipes that helped you get your Protein in, and any other advice you'd like to share. Ask questions, if you have them. Use this thread as you see fit, but mostly to keep in touch with everyone.
I know quite a few people went to the Facebook page. I know it's private, but I've seen cases where private information was temporarily made public on Facebook by Facebook glitches/viruses/hacks. I know there is no intention of it going public but I rather not take the risk.
So I hope to hear from you all soon!!
    Best wishes and good luck!

    Hey my fellow October sleevers,

How is everyone doing? People that's been recently sleeved, how you feeling? Well the gas has subsided... I'm feeling loads better besides the pain from one of my cut. Plus I have a mild cough and it kills me to cough of sneeze. Feel like I'm gonna bust each time I do it lol. Also my stomach feels so tight. Like I've been doing mad sit-ups. I don't know how much weight I've lost since the surgery ( October 1st ) my post-op appoinment was today but I had to miss since my little bambino got sick. I'm kinda scared to get on the scale to be honest, I'm scared it won't move much. My mom had a bypass when I was 7 so she keeps telling me it'll be okay, "your gonna lose it sunshine". She's 6'0" probably 140 lbs on a bad day lol. But I'm worried about getting in all my Protein. It's hard because if i sip too fast I get terrible gas bubbles. Too slow the day will pass and I'll still be on shake #1. And I drink EAS. It tolerable but I'm not too happy with it. I feel like I'm talking yall ear off so somebody anybody HIT ME UPPPPPP:)
    Prayers up for you guys:)

rumpole6 got a reaction from MrsSugarbabe in Slower than expected Weight Loss in the beginning
I am very early days, two weeks post-op as of today and I am not seeing the results I expected. I was really hopeful because i lost 14 lbs on the preop diet, but week one I lost 3.5 lbs and week 2 I lost 2.5 lbs for a total of 6t lbs post-op. With the 14 pre-op Its a total of 20 over three weeks so I am not sure what I am complaining about but I expected more since calories are so low. I am tempted to chalk this up to age, or unrealistic expectations, but my surgeon told me way back when that I might lose 30 lbs in the first month, and that doesn't seem possible now unless I include the preop weight loss and even then it might not be possible.
I've gone back to work and the increased activity of that may help accelerate the weightloss, I hope.
I would love to hear how others our age (58 at surgery) did in the very early days.
    Best Regards,
    Barry

Ps. This pre-op diet SUCKS, but I'm sticking to it 100%.
    What's your story?

Day 4 of the preop diet. I am on 2 shakes and 2 frozen dinners (think lean cuisine). Yesterday was really tough and I ended up going to bed really early. Today is tough too because I work in a high stress environment. So today I went for a little walk on lunch just to feel a little better, which worked for a while. Now I will push the Water down even though I am floating and try to hang on until 4pm snack. I can do this! I am determined to do this so I keep on plugging. Bring on the sleeve!

I think its perfectly normal, too. I go the day before you but I really felt so much better about things after the preop with my surgeon and the nutritional class. It does seem true that the worst two weeks will be the first two weeks, but my nutritionist said everyone is different and some people can start on the pureed phase early. I might be too afraid to try that early, though, even if things are going well. Also, at least my surgeon said they test for leaks while you are still asleep and if they find them they fix them right away. And rarely do they see leaks afterward.

I'm a nut, because I was not nervous at all! Even as I walked up to the hospital, I was pretty chill. I figured if something bad happened I had a good run. LOL.

I think it is definitely perfectly normal! I remember very vividly having a complete emotional meltdown about a week before surgery. It is a lot to deal with...the physical plus the emotional. Those first couple weeks are tough, but the biggest things are to keep moving and work on the liquids. The Protein is good, but it will come. You'll do great!!!

I am new to the boards and feeling so nervous right now. My surgery date is 10/14...I am doing OK on the pre op diet but my anxiety over the initial post op phase is getting to me. I am obsessing that I won't get in enough fluids and Proteins, or imagining the worst...that I will have a leak. Just wanting to feel that this is normal?

I have been told to crush all my meds or get soluble equivalents for the first 6 weeks after my op. Have been crushing them and taking in Water but they taste revolting. Will be glad when I can go back to taking them whole.

Yes! Vitamins I started slowly 10 days after surgery but meds I started immediately after surgery, while at the hospital. Dissolving them in Water was awful so I crushed them into smaller pieces and took them that way for 3 weeks, a pain for sure. The smaller ones I started taking them whole when I started on soft foods and the larger ones I started taking whole once I was eating solid foods.

When you get to the point where you can eat yogurt. Put the pill on the back of your tongue and swallow your pill with a little bit of yogurt(no chucks). They do NOT hurt at all. I still do this everyday. I recently tested taking my pills with Water again. Ouch! Back to the yogurt I go! They just glide down and no drama added!

First real "encounter" since the surgery (lots of fooling around, but yesterday was... the full meal deal). And... guys... wow. GET THIS SURGERY.
Before the surgery, I was a real "one minute wonder" (if I could even get lucky; at 338, it doesn't happen much). I would be panting and wheezing and see spots, and I was lucky to even be able to finish. I was used to the woman not... finishing, either.
    Yesterday.
    SEVEN. HOURS.
She had more... moments of joy than I could count (maybe 12? 15? 20?), and I had... THREE.
THREE. In one night! Guys, I'm 42. That just doesn't HAPPEN to guys my age.
And it certainly never happened before the sleeve.
Good god, men, if you have ANY problems in that area at all and are pre-sleeve, RUN, don't walk, and get the surgery.
UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE. I thought that stuff only happened in porno movies...
Ok, I'll shut up now. But... wow.
    Sore... exhausted... and happy
Edit: uh, it wasn't seven hours continuously, I should mention... 8pm till 3am, but not all, uh, action. Even at my current fitness level, that WOULD kill me. Seven hours of go... rest, chat, laugh... go... rest, chat, laugh... repeat until too sore and exhausted to continue! And NOW I WILL shut up.

Absolutely, even with the sleeve, this is going to be one day at a time. I am making the changes as well. The next step for me is after the nutrition class to be starting the preop diet which is rumored to be Protein shakes and one lean cuisine. but I am not sure exactly when it will be starting.

Absolutely! I've been more aware of the cyclic nature of food addiction - recreational eating leads to obesity leads to being too tired / pained to do anything for recreation but eat more, etc. I know for me it's been a struggle to try to find ways around that, and sometimes I don't succeed. One day at a time, right?
