gra5u5 got a reaction from astrong1 in Getting back on track!
I am 25 mo post op and never reached my goal weight though I did lose 120 after surgery. I have gained 14 lbs this past year. I too had some family things that enticed me back to sweets, carbs, and alcohol. I got back on this site a couple of weeks ago and see I am not the only one!
Last week I read about the 5 day pouch test on this forum. I googled it and read about it. I started it last Thursday. I feel so much better! My cravings are gone and I've lost 5 lbs.
This weight thing is truly a life long struggle. Good luck to you!

I am a little over 2 years out. I have struggled this past year and have gained 14 pounds. I came back to this forum for help as I so depended on it my first year. I read that so many of us have gained some and struggled with the lifestyle changes we have to make to stay healthy. I saw that many have gotten back on track by using the 5 day pouch test. I looked it up online and read it for about a week before I convinced myself to give it a shot. It really has helped. I have lost 5 pounds and feel much more satisfied with healthy food choices. Of course, I've cut my calories by 300-500 per day, log all my food on "Lose it", Zumba three times a week, and drink more than 64 oz of Water a day. I also walk half a hour daily. Your biggest hurdle was admitting you had to get back on track and you've done that. You're back on this forum for support. Know that we are all here for you. You got this! Good luck and check in often to let us know how you're doing.

Unfortunately I have no problem with alcohol. I work it into my daily calorie count and have a couple of glasses of wine in the evenings.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but I don't require as much sleep as I did before surgery. I used to need between 9-10 hours a night. But now 9 months post op, I'm good with 7-8 hours a night. An unexpected bonus.

gra5u5 reacted to DLCoggin in Do the effects of the surgery wear off?--RNY Veterans
About 50% of RNY patients never experience dumping. Some experience dumping and fail to recognize it and others experience symptoms similar to dumping and assume it is dumping when the cause is actually something else. Regardless, there is no scientific evidence that folks who experience dumping are any more or less successful than those who don't. For those who qualify, there is a long list of life-changing benefits from RNY. Not one of them is attributed by medical science to dumping.
Complete loss of appetite immediately following surgery and in some cases extending up to several months is quite common. But your appetite does eventually return. And that is most assuredly a very good and a very healthy thing. It is absolutely nothing to fear. But you will find that your appetite is different than it was pre-op. Very recent research studies are just beginning to understand some of the underlying causes of the changes. For example, the results of a study published in May of this year found that there is a decrease in an appetite stimulating hormone (ghrelin) following RNY. They concluded that the decrease may explain why the sensation of hunger is often diminished following RNY.
In another study published in March of this year, researchers at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital found that gastric bypass performed on mice produced dramatic changes in the microbes found in the gut. Those bacteria tend to not only boost metabolism, but also extract fewer calories from food during digestion. Even more surprising, they found that the changes seemed to occur almost immediately following surgery. Like all research, new findings invariably lead to new questions that must be answered. It will likely be several years before application for humans (if any) is known but these initial results are promising.
Still other very recent studies have found that a procedure they named "bile diversion" has produced results similar to RNY in rats and several recent studies have found a number of links between obesity and a previously unidentified gene known as "FTO".
The fact that RNY works in a very high percentage of cases is undisputable. Exactly "how" it works is still in the very early stages of being understood. For now it is perhaps most important to remember that the ultimate success of all forms of bariatric surgery is, and always has been, about the Prime Directive - lifestyle changes. The surgery is a life-changing tool that makes those formerly impossible changes, possible. You're gonna love the new you!!

And it's tough. Takes a lot of planning.. Also the stress of no scale... Yes I am a scale-aholic!! Making me crabby!! Upside so proud of my daughter. She graduated with honors... I was able to shower the next day after they took out the catheter. I had hoped to go back after 2 weeks (I have a desk job), but I took that extra week. I am glad I did. I was still dog tired by the end of the day.

My surgeon allows Zyrtec D because of my allergies. Benadryl doesn't work and makes me tired and sudafed does nothing for me. I take a 12 hour pill versus a 24 hour pill and no problems and it works fine on me at this time.
    I'm jealous! I miss my Zyrtec D.

Since about a week or so out I have used Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt. I still eat it almost everyday. It is a bit thinner and I get the vanilla. 80 Calories and 12 grams of Protein in the whole container. I never had an issue with the sugar and my Dr was OK with me eating it. I started out really slow and was fine.
