I live right by the ocean so, although I love meat, I tend to eat a LOT of seafood. Wild-caught salmon, flounder, striped bass, squid, shrimp, scallops, oysters, clams, halibut. I love it all! I sear it and serve it over cooked greens. Yum.

For those of you who think they don't like quinoa, it may be that you have bought the kind that hasn't been pre-rinsed. Freshly harvested seeds are covered with a bitter substance called saponin. In nature the saponins function as a pest repellant. This coating needs to be removed, both because it is somewhat toxic, and also it is very bitter. Even when I buy "pre-rinsed" quinoa, I give it a quick rinse in a strainer. It is worth the trouble, though, because this is the only high (ish) carb food that I eat- it is a great seed and it also has Protein. I use it anywhere I would use rice, oats, etc. You can also buy quinoa flour.
This morning I made a baked custard with quinoa, eggs, milk, pear puree, and vanilla Beans. So yummy, you wouldn't believe it. It will be my Breakfast for the next 5 days, or so...

I'm almost a year and a half out from surgery and I've almost reached goal weight- have completely changed my lifestyle, and I'm pretty proud of my progress. I went from a size 22 pair of jeans to a size 8 (I'm 5'9"). I walk close to 4 mi./day. People that I knew from before will walk right past me in the grocery store without recognizing me. Talk about a NSV...
Then, a couple of weeks ago, I fell and broke my jaw! Ugh! It was competely wired shut for 2 weeks. Hello liquid diet again! Fortunately I had previous experience with that, so I knew to make home made chicken and beef stock, Protein Drinks, and I ordered powdered supplements from Celebrate. I knew that RNY peeps are not really supposed to use straws, but, what choice did I have? I lost an 10 additional pounds, which I didn't really need to lose...
Now, they have replaced some of the wires with rubber bands, so I can barely bit a baby spoon between my jaws. So, on to the puree stage! Can anyone say deja vu? Again, I knew just what to make/buy for this stage of my recovery.
Next week, I move on to mushies. Needless to say, I can't wait until the final stage of this, but it will be a while before I eat anything crispy or chewy again. Then I will buy a 3 oz. portion of filet mignon, season it, sear it in a pan, and rip it apart with my fingers and teeth (I adore meat lol).
So, I had a little set back but, ironically enough, my RNY experience has helped me to successfully and HEALTHFULLY navigate this episode.

I've lost 85 lbs. since my surgery in July. The only carbs I ingest are incidental, that is they are part of the vegetables/nuts/fruits that I eat. My diet consists of ZERO grains now--it is basically the paleo diet, except I eat no honey, and only a few fruits & berries. I am convinced that this is good for me and my current life style. I guess the most important thing is sustainability. Can you see yourself eating like this "forever"? I can! I feel so wonderfully healthy right now I could run into the streets & shout about it! Haha, guess not...

My doctor said no alcohol until six months out. Internal healing is considerably slower than external. So alcohol prior to you being completely healed is an invitation for an ulcer. Virtually all alcohols are also sugar and could result in dumping. And as we all know, alcohol is empty calories with virtually no nutritional value. You may also want to keep in mind that it will hit you harder and more quickly than before. Doctors often quote the ratio of three to one - one drink post-op is like three pre-op. If you do drink, very good idea to give the keys to someone else. There are some real nightmare DWI stories out there from RNY patients. I don't want to give you the wrong impression - I enjoy a glass of wine before dinner more nights than not. But I didn't touch it until six months out.

You may want to try a Protein supplement with whey "isolate" as opposed to whey "concentrate" if you haven't already. The difference between the two is the amount of filtering. whey isolate is 90 to 96% pure Protein with most fat and lactose removed. Most folks who are lactose intolerant can tolerate whey isolate. The bad news is that isolate is usually more expensive as the ultra filtering process is costly.
As others have pointed out, there are many soy products out there to chose from. The trick, whether whey or soy, is finding a product that you like the taste of. Always a good idea to buy small quantities until you find the right one. Be persistent and don't give up until you find a way to get ALL of your daily protein. You'll be glad you did!!

Lol! She is the best fur covered friend anyone could possibly ask for! She makes me laugh every day of the world. She's "only" 95 lbs but we've been walking since she was a puppy and she is an absolute dream on the leash. Labs are amazingly intelligent. I think the key is a short leash and using a prong collar when you walk, and only when you walk. The collar looks intimidating but it absolutely doesn't hurt her. Cesar Milan says that the prongs simulate her mom's teeth when she was a puppy and mom had to correct her. She wears her regular collar (red of course!) most of the time but when we're going for a walk, I put the prong collar on and she's like a machine - right by my side the whole time!! With a little practice and a little patience I bet your lab would be the same!!

I walk in a park near my home with my black lab. I'm up to three miles a day and I walk at least four to five times a week. No doubt in my mind that it increased my weight loss, reduced the time it took to lose the weight, and puts a smile on my lab's face every time! Love it!!

I tried Decaf with sugar free hazelnut Creamer at about 3 weeks and it just wasn't good. So I tried sugar free french vanilla. No good. Just doesn't taste right to me anymore. I did try a half caf skinny iced mocha and it didn't taste good either. I'll still try coffee from time to time because I loved it so much preop.
Now my taste is all about black tea and herbal teas - yum!
