I lost about 20 pounds in the process of waiting for surgery, and people noticed then, but I think like @@LilMissDiva Irene, my face and neck thin out quickly.
I'm only a little over a week out from surgery but haven't really seen anyone since I started the pre-op diet (I've been a hermit!), so I'm not sure if people will notice or not. I'm down about 22 pounds since the start of the pre-op diet.

It looks like you and I both started around the same weight. I would say it was between 40-50 pounds lost when people really started to notice. I still get comments almost daily from people at work and church. It doesn't get old....lol. I answer the questions if they are from people I'm comfortable with, or not if not. It really is a case by case basis, although no one at works knows I had surgery, only my close friends and family.

People started noticing on me fast. I always lose from the face down, and I think being the face the first place people look it's the most noticeable. I think it was around 50 Lbs gone that I was getting comments all day long.

That's about the same for me. Took quite a bit for others to notice, but once they all did notice, the questions never stop.
It depends on how I dress too, living in upper Midwest, ive usually got layers on for cold so im able hide it still.

I lost 33lbs on my own before I began my pre op diet and had surgery. Not many people noticed. I think it was when I got around 50lbs down that folks really started to take notice and comment a lot. I am now down about 84lbs and it I the craziest thing, no one believes I still have as much to go as I do!!! I don't like to give numbers to them, not yet. ( On here is different, I feel less judgment.) But when I say I am not quite halfway to goal people are always shocked. I guess even they cannot imagine me at a truly healthy weight. I do know that I carry my weight in a way that is a bit deceiving, I have been told this a lot. ( I guess that is a good thing?) Right now I weigh 232lbs and my goal is 140lbs. If folks think I look good now, I can't imagine what they might think once I hit "onederland" and lower. I will probably be told I am TOO skinny!!! What a laugh!

After I'd lost ~45 pounds, folks--my hairdresser, the post office workers, a neighbor, a friend I hadn't seen in a while--noticed. I saw my hairdresser when I'd lost 30 pounds, but, nothing. Also, it's been winter, so I've been mostly covered up, or not in the yard much, or walking the subdivision, etc. They don't know of the WLS, either; I'm "eating a lot of Protein."
I've decided that if someone asks the specific question, "Did you have WLS?" I'll tell them. But if it's "what are you doing?" Right now, I'm "doing" lots of Protein, so that'll be my answer, unless I feel I want them to know. (If it's someone fat, I might tell them of the WLS 'cuz they might be thinking about it.)
Congratulations on your 70 pounds!! Wow.

Negative progress (yes, that means another gain!) for the second week in a row. This is the first time this has happened in the 8 months since my surgery. Still, there are 2 things that are keeping me from stressing over this. First, by being a part of this site I've seen it happen to plenty of others so I was expecting it. That's really one of the GREAT things about bariatricpal...I am almost NEVER surprised by what happens in my own case as I'm able to take advantage of the experiences of others. That's just SO cool! But the second reason is that I have some indicators that my shape is changing. My pants have been fitting different in the past 2 weeks and I've gotten compliments from people who see me every day. So I really think this little plateau (including just a bit of weight gain) is not hurting me at all and will be over soon. So...I'm just hanging in there and being patient. I probably won't make my goal this time but I'm still feeling incredibly good. Yup, that's right...it's really no big deal (never thought I'd be able to say that!)

Ree reacted to WhoKnows in HELP! Before My Husband Ends Up Where I Am!
Honestly, I wish people had offered me legit help back in the day. It's a bit different because my weight gain started when I was a little kid (though my parents did nothing out of the belief that I didn't need my diet policed and that I'd find my own way to healthy eating), and obviously your husband is an adult, but I don't think offering help and support and policing his diet are the same thing. Maybe just say to him, "I've observed these behaviors, and I don't know what they're about for you, but I know for a lot of people they may mean x,y, or z. If you're happy, I'm happy, but if you're not happy, there are thing we can try (therapy and nutritionist for starters), and I'll support you and help you all the way. I won't bring it up again, but if you decide you want to bring it up or try something new tomorrow, next month, next year, or in ten years, let me know." I really wish someone had said something like this to me, not just when I was a kid, but also as an adult.

I was a little freaked out by it too when I first heard that the little staples don't come out. Watch this video, it talks more about it here:

Ree reacted to shelly513 in 170lbs gone.. 12 months post op.
It's been a long time since I've been on here so hete I go...
This has been the most amazing journey over the last year. I have started to live again and love again.
I was a food addict. I still am but im in recovery... I ALWAYS will be.when I was 353lbs I would wake up and think about food. I would eat and eat and eat. I reached the point that I could barely tie my own shoes bc i could barely bend over. I had to roll off of my couch to get up.. I could barely wipe my own ass. I was always uncomfortable.
    Miserable.. I was completely miserable.
When I would pull thru the drive thru I would act like I was ordering for 2 bc i was ordering so much food. When I was cashing out at the convenient store I was act like I was buying all that chips and candy for my kids.. not me.
    Embarrassed. .. that's what I was.
I would constantly compare myself to everyone... I would look at other women and actually be mad at her bc she looked better than me.. she had a better body than me.. my man probably wanted her bc i was so fat and ugly.
Ashamed is what I had become.
Finally I decided after years of dieting enough was enough.... I had the gastric sleeve 02/26/2013.BEST DECISION I MADE.
It's now been a year and here are my stats. 32 years old and 5-7'.I was 353 and now I'm 183lbs. Went from a bmi of 55.5 to 28.7. I wore a size 26 pants and now I'm in 10/12.
Over the last year I have stayed active. For the first 6 months I was VERY strict.on what I ate. Now I'm more lenient. I eat every 3 hours making Protein #1. That isn't hard for me bc I'm a hard core carnivore. As far as exercise I life weights 2xs a week at home.. 2 10 lb weights.. I walk 3 miles 4xs a week also. I've never busted my ass at the gym and

Ree got a reaction from Mrs. Whatsit in Good way to shock yourself....
Once you are at least 3 months out from surgery, go find a pair of jeans you wore prior to surgery and try them on. You'll be shocked! Better yet, when you are having a bad day go put on those pants, because that will remind you how far along you've come in your journey.
So today I was trying to decide which type of jeans to buy online because the ones I just started wearing 3 weeks ago are already too big but even worse they are too long (I'm short, only 5ft tall), actually the "too big" part doesn't bother me at all. So I tried on an old pair of jeans that I wore just days prior to surgery to check the length, and OMG I couldn't believe how big they were on me. It took all I could just to hold them up as I checked the length on the jeans with my sneakers on. I swear there must of been at least a good foot between my body and the front of the jeans as I held them out from my stomach.
Well I'm already down 4 sizes. As embarrassing as this is to admit, I was a size 28 and I'm a girl (a guy in a size 28 is good, but a girl?) I am now fitting in to a size 20. Super excited about that! I wonder when the rest of my family will notice my weight loss? Only my observant aunt noticed when I was only 2 months out from surgery.
No one knows I had weight loss surgery except for my husband.
