    Did I get your attention???
Ok, curiosity... when I answer posts here, I am always coming from a perspective of a "food addict"
But many times I have people write back...
"But I don't have an addiction to food"
Which I always think to myself YEAH RIGHT!
Don't beat me up I'm being honest!!
What can I say I'm pessimistic, I also laugh when people say they don't eat TO MUCH so they don't understand how the are fat.. I AM FAT BECAUSE I EAT LIKE A PIG (alone mostly)
Today I thought about, "what if I'm wrong?"
I mean...I am me and I am addicted, how do I know how the next person is???
I'm curious as an addicted fat person how is it for those of you who are not addicted?
Oh and on a side note if I am wrong, then I'm also jealous because I would give anything not to have this problem (addiction)

I'm not an RN but I do work in the health care field in a hospital. I've learned that I have to prepare prior to work. Whether it's packing a lunch/water/vitamins, or just preparing mentally. I know it sounds a little self-centered but, I would talk about what I needed to do to with my co-workers. Actually, now that I think about it, I talk about it all the time at work! ha ha! Now I talk about it because another one of my close coworkers is going through the same process so, that also helps me to stay focused.
Bottom line, you're going to have to make time for yourself. I know it will be hard. Nurses work HARD. But, once you get into a routine at work, it will get easier. Good luck!

Had my RNY in 2004. Although I had a regain (have lost 2/3 of it, though), I am definitely glad I had WLS. If I hadn't, who knows how heavy I would be now! At 62 I have my mobility problems (arthritis - a family trait), but would have had to have 2 knee replacements by now if I hadn't lost the weight.
WLS is not a cure for our problem. We still have to do "the right things" - proper eating, exercising, etc. - but it can help us get to where we want to IF we are willing to overcome the hurdles in our path.

Yes!! I started at 300 lbs on the dot and today I weight 115!!!! I was always the fat girl. I had tried pills, trainers, all the diets, doctors, dietitians... Nothing worked. I would lose some and then gain more. WLS was the best decision I ever made! I've never been so happy with myself. I'm no longer ashamed. I can be the person I always wanted to be. Nothing holds me back!

I've been thinking about this alot lately. After having some very stressful and anxiety provoking days at work all I wanted to do was curl up hide and eat. But I couldn't and found myself searching for something that would alter my mood the way food did. And three things came to mind... Shopping, smoking, or having a drink. I said no to both and instead forced myself to really think about my feelings. Poor coping mechanisms helped us gain weight. I think the key is to avoid starting these bad behaviors and setting up healthier ones. I know -easier said than done!

I was surprised that I felt so much pain after surgery. BUT, I would do it all over again 10 times to be where I am today. I was surprised that I actually lost so much weight! ha ha ha I knew I was going to but, it was more of a faraway dream. Now I'm living my dream.

I'm down to 188 from 297! That's 109lbs in a years time! I am feeling so great! 30 lbs to my goal weight. No complications. I am sensitive to sugar and have had mild dumping here and there. Carbs are the fight now. Keeping them lower than my Protein is a daily challenge. But I succeed most days. I have had a few glasses of wine and done good. Sip it slow and I get a lil buzz for a short time, then it's gone. I just need to get to the exercise and tone up. That's my next challenge. Happy Friday everyone!!

Well the good news is I met with the psychologist today for my evaluation. He told me he had no concerns recommending me for surgery. Which I so great and I am relieved to have that part over. Next week I meet with the Nurse Practitioner and Dietician again, making it my third visit. Only three more to go after that.
With all that being said.... While at the store today a woman asked me "what I was hiding in there" pointing at my stomach. I can only hope for the best in that scenario and assume she thought I was pregnant but it hurt so much. Now I am a totally mess and wondering if the dr. Really should have given the ok. It doesn't help that I would love to be able to have another baby someday but that is impossible and the whole situation makes me feel horrible.
My husband doesn't understand and I feel pretty alone right now. I suppose I was hoping someone else had been here before....

I know you're not supposed to compare yourself to others, but I am just curious. I am 3 months out and down 64 lbs. (Total including my preop) I am 5'2 and weigh 158 lbs. I have about 30lbs I would still like to lose. My weigh loss has slowed down tremendously! Which I am OK with as long as I still see progress.
I have read most people lose most their weight during the 1st 6 months.. so hopefully I have a few good months left! these last few weeks have been killers!! I have been exercising more so maybe I will tone up and not see it on the scale! (Wishful thinking) However.. I feel great and am happy with my loss so far.

One of my colleagues commented that I must be a hypochondriac to have had surgery. He has a master's degree (no guarantee against ignorance). I calmly explained that no, obesity, high blood pressure an hyperlipidemia are dangerous conditions. I was surprised at my colleague's ignorance.
Several people also have commented, "you don't look big enough to need surgery." Again, I calmly explain that I have class I obesity and that I do not want to become morbidly obese. It is very interesting that I have received these comments from other bariatric patients. Fascinating.

For anyone that is looking into having RNY surgery...look at what it has done for me...
In April of this year I weighed in at 309lbs. I was devistated. I was wearing 24/26 clothes that were tight! Well in just 7 short months this is where I am now 188lbs and wearing a size 12. I have about 23 more pounds to go until I get to my goal of 165 (I am 5'9 so that is a BMI 25) and for Thanksgiving this year...I am jogging/walking in my FIRST 5k. I am so excited I can't hardly wait. I AM SO THANKFUL FOR MY RNY. It has changed my life FOREVER and I am so happy with the results that I have had. Here is some before and now photos.

Molly1978 reacted to Warren L. Huberman PhD. in Alternate Expectations: A Guide To Navigating Holiday Eating
The holiday season is here and it’s time for us all to quickly gain ten pounds. What? Why would I say that? I say that because it’s written all over the place. Over the next few weeks, you are going to see and hear references to our tendency to gain weight during this time of year in every newspaper, magazine, website, blog and television news program. And while the opportunities to eat may increase this time of year and the kinds of foods pushed on us are often not the healthiest, you don’t have to gain weight. However, if you expect to…you will.

What do expectations have to do with weight gain? Think of expectations as a combination of predictions and learned patterns of behavior. Outcomes that have occurred in the past, we generally expect to happen again. Take Thanksgiving for example, or what I like to call “National Binge Eating Day.” Thanksgiving is one of those few days of the year where the holiday seems to be about overeating. Of course, Thanksgiving is supposed to be about taking the opportunity to give thanks for how fortunate we are to live in this great country and to count our blessings for what we have. However, if you ask most Americans what comes to mind when they think of Thanksgiving I’ll bet turkey, stuffing, pie and football come long before giving thanks. More importantly, it’s not only food and eating that we think of but overeating and overindulging. This is so common that it’s often parodied in television commercials. Companies that manufacture antacids run ads showing people with exploding pant buttons or slumped back in the big armchair following the big meal. Thanksgiving, holiday parties and overeating seem to be synonymous.
Many of us expect to overeat on Thanksgiving and at holiday parties so we inadvertently mentally gear up for this to happen. With this expectation of overeating in mind, our behavior becomes less controllable…you’re psychologically setting the stage for a binge to occur by expecting a huge meal to be served and by recalling previous Thanksgivings when you overate. Similarly, this is the season of holiday parties. Holiday parties tend to include foods that are rich, highly caloric and plentiful. And let’s not forget the alcohol. When you attend holiday parties, many of us expect these foods and drinks to be available and we are more likely to overindulge if that has been our pattern in the past. You’re certainly not a drone who is unable to make change, but it is infinitely less likely unless you take active steps to make that change. What can you do to prevent overeating at this time of year and gaining those extra pounds?
Change your expectations by planning what you will do ahead of time. On the morning of Thanksgiving, think about what the likely layout will be where you are having the meal. Have you been there before? Do you know what to expect to be on the table? If so, plan ahead. Make some decisions about what you will eat and how much. Promise yourself that you will not overeat. After all, it’s just one meal and ironically many people who overeat say they’re not particularly fond of Thanksgiving food. They just get caught up in the collective binge mentality and the rest is history. If you plan ahead and carefully consider what to do instead of binging, you have a much better chance of controlling yourself and feeling good about your eating behavior afterwards.

Consider that while eating may be a significant and enjoyable part of holiday parties and gatherings, OVEREATING does not need to be. Try not to give yourself permission to overindulge. Let’s face it…eating is fun and enjoyable and is a large part of holiday merriment. However, there is no fun in feeling nauseas or uncomfortable just after the meal and guilty and self-deprecating hours later.

Don’t starve yourself on Thanksgiving morning or on the day of a holiday party. This is one of the most common, yet foolish strategies people employ. The calories you give up by skipping Breakfast and lunch usually pale in comparison to the calorie content of the evening binge at Thanksgiving or the holiday party. Instead, eat normally during the day which may actually help keep you from binging later. You are far more likely to control yourself if you are mostly full during the day rather than starving when you walk in the door of the party.

Consider making some eating compromises. Who said you have to have turkey only on Thanksgiving? Is pecan pie banned at other times of year? Consider having the foods that truly are once a year items rather than loading up on everything. And even then, you don’t need five pounds of the special foods. If you only get to eat your grandmother’s special stuffing once a year, you certainly shouldn’t pass that up. However, I promise you that eating a ton of it will not make you happier than having two nice size tablespoons of the stuff. Again, plan ahead and make decisions earlier in the day.

Watch the booze. Alcohol causes our judgment to get a little fuzzy. You are going to be more successful controlling your behavior if your brain is firing on all cylinders. If you drink too much too early in the day, you’re going to have a tougher time sticking to whatever plan you created. Also, too much alcohol causes us to make other foolish decisions. There are enough unfortunate tragedies that happen this time of year. Make sure you’re not a part of one.

I’m not suggesting in any way that you be a killjoy and I certainly don’t believe that it’s necessary to avoid holiday parties or gatherings where food is available. By planning ahead, changing your expectations, and making a few specific eating compromises, you can truly have your cake and eat it too.
    Happy Holidays!

My PCP claims that artificial sweeteners are bad for us. I have switched to stevia. But Splenda and aspartame are everywhere. I like sweet stuff. My nutritionist claims that caffeine stimulates appetite and thus to avoid it - Decaf only. Measuring food might be a good tool to use to help distinguish between head hunger and physical hunger. I am still prep but know that at some poor post op I will face the issue you are facing. Wishing you success!
