Update
I know a man that had the band and had to stay in the hospital for about 4-6 weeks on IV's cause the same thing happened to him. He got banded and could not keep anything down. He was a big man and I guess when they put the band on him the band totally restricted him. That is a guess only!! But, this has been in Sept or Oct of 04 and I know he still has the band and is losing weight. Best of luck to u and hang in there....u should eventually be able to gulp tea. That is until u get a fill:-)

Info from nutritionist
Just thought I would post information from another support site. At the Port Arthur, Texas meeting last night, a nutritionist spoke. These are the notes I took. Your comments are welcome. She said she counsels/advises people who are overweight and said if Craving Carbs - need Magnesium. I've read magnesium is helpful for cravings before menstral cycles, too. Also, I've read when people crave chocolate, they need Magnesium. Sweets - use up chromium in our bodies Chromium is beneficial to diabetics - often lacking in this We need 1500 mg Calcium & 750 mg of Magnesium a day (Calcium contracts muscles & Magnesium relaxes muscles) Magnesium Oxide is not soluble We need either Flax Seed Oil or Fish Oil (capsules) each day..I don't know how much but plan a trip to Mr. T's Health food Store to find out. Also, will find the daily requirements for minerals there. I'll let you know. If a person has acid reflux or indigestion, try taking 1 teasp vinegar. If this stops the reflux or indigestion it means you do not have enough acid in your stomach rather than too much as one might think. A product Betaine (hydrochloric acid) contains the acids we need. Walking or exercise after dinner is important for digestion. When taking Betaine or hydrochloric acid for digestion bounce up and down on your toes (with them still on the floor) after each swallow. This is for everyone, lap band or not. Sounds funny but she said it is important. Walking is equal to Prozac for depression studies show. Any artificial sweetener is not good for us and have been associated with MS and other things I did not have time to write down. Fiber is beneficial in reducing cholesterol. Tofu, which I've never tried, is a good source of Protein. It has no flavor but takes on the flavor of whatever it is cooked in or battered in. She said Basic Foods (one in Beaumont Texas) has tofu that comes in flavors such as barbecue. Also, she mentioned Meso and Tempeah, Asian foods for protein. Some people, like her, are allergic to meat or don't eat meat so these are good sources of protein. Iron is essential in our diet. Benefiber for regularity completely dissolves in Water or juice with no flavor. Can be added to coffee. Deficiencies causing anemia are B-12, B-6 and Folic Acid and a test should be run for each individually for people who are anemic. Now, as a grandmother who has always thought milk is important for children, this is something I will have to research but thought I'd pass her thoughts along: Milk is not a good source of calcium for the protein in it binds calcium. If we do not get calcium daily by diet or supplements, our body takes calcium from our bones. Milk contains growth hormones given the cows and is passed on to us. She says it is believed the hormones are contributing to obesity and other problems in children. She says...now research this...She said milk should not be given to children past ages 4 to 5. Of course, mother's milk for babies is the best. She suggested Notmilk.com to learn about milk. But, please remember, children must have calcium daily and daily requirements of Vitamins to be healthy both now and in the future. If they are not eating a proper diet of protein, vegetables and fruits, etc. they do need supplements. I am just passing along the things the nutritionist said. Research them for yourselves. Just a little more info for all of us!!!

Dr. Spivak??
Marie..U are right. I never actually met Dr Spivak; but when I did talk to him on the phone he was very nice. His nurse tried to take the fill out; but could not hit my port. The radiologist ended up doing it under fluro. That is my only experience with him.

Sanmae (Sandi) asks:
And this was my reply... Sanmae....just a suggestion for you to post your thread under introductions so that everyone will notice it.... Just a littly FYI, I am 5'7" and started out at 235, in a 20-22 size pants and a XXL shirt. I am now in a size 12 pants and M-L shirt. I have lost a total of 65 lbs and have 20 to go. I was banded on Aug 20-03. I had my surgery on a wed and was back to work on Monday. A nurse told me just the other day that it takes up to 2 years for you to lose all the weight. Could be shorter, could be longer depending on if you eat nothing but sweets or if you eat your Protein first like the Doctor's suggest. As far as your insurance..i have no clue...Have a wonderful day!
