Need advice/opinions
If a doctor has done a lot of RNY's then he has a lot of experience with the staple line. That is the most important thing to consider. The RNY is a much more complicated surgery. Dr. Criangle is supposed to be the most experienced sleeve surgeon in CA, but I would not hesitate to recommend Dr Aceves who is also a very experienced sleeve surgeon. Considering more than half the people on this board have gone to him and nobody has ever had anything but wonderful things to say about their experience, Dr. Aceves should be a top choice for anyone considering this surgery. If you have insurance that's going to pay, that would be the only reason not to go to him. His cash price is very good considering you will spend 3 days in the hospital and get 3 leak tests.

18 months post op today!
Thanks everyone! I gained that 8 lbs over 4 days. That's 2 lbs a day from eating pure junk. My co-worker went to the dollar store and filled up a gift bag full of candy bars. Plus cake and ice cream every day- Friday, Sat, Sun, and my actual birthday on Mon. Four days of junk and no exercise at all. I really should be shot :=( Then back to business Tuesday, and today it's officially gone! I LOVE the sleeve!

Straws? Can anyone shed some light for me?
Ahh no wonder I have never seen one. I rarely leave the coast, and if I do, it's to Eugene.

Not wanting to eat
That is a good question to ask you doctor. Most people hate Isopure so I have never seen that question in here before. I drank it, and didn't like it, but didn't hate it either. It was easier to drink the first week because it's not as thick as other Protein drinks.

New Format/Profile question
Are you reading the board as Sleeve talk which is pink and purple? If so, it's on the left side near your name. If you're reading it in blue, as IP board, it's on the right corner, right next to your name. I read it as an IP board and all the ads are gone. I click on the arrow next to my name, and it says profile. At the very bottom of the board, on the left, you can switch to IP board.

HOW DO I DEAL WITH MY DAUGHTER????
Keep healthy snacks around instead of chips and cookies, etc. I have a sweet tooth at night, but I eat sf popsicles and sf jello with a little low fat cool whip. All you can do is try not to keep fattening things around, and cook a lot of veggies and lean meats. There are plenty of recipes for the South Beach Diet which teaches healthy carbs instead of simple carbs. You can teach her good eating habits, but yes , I would try not to mention how many more lbs you have lost this week to her, if it's upsetting to her.

What do have for Breakfast???
I've had a protein shake for breakfast since the day I was banded which will be 4 years ago this Dec. I am just not hungry in the mornings, and have never been a breakfast eater. This way I am sure I am starting the day out with a good amount of protein. Some days I will have half of a Costco protein bar instead because they are very big.

18 months post op today!
Well today I am 18 months post op. I am so happy with the sleeve, I want to shout it out on top of the roof top. Last night I met a really super cute guy who told me that I look really great for my age. I turned 58 Monday. He could not believe I am 58 and asked to see my drivers license! There is no way a guy like this would have ever looked at me before. The sleeve has opened up a whole new world for me. I am so happy that there are so many younger people getting sleeved every day, and now will be able to experience life at a normal weight. I wish the sleeve had been out years ago! I was so afraid of gaining weight back and I have twice since I got to goal over a year ago. Last March I went on a 10 day cruise and gained 11 lbs . I lost it in a week. Over the weekend, because I started celebrating my birthday early, I gained 8 lbs. Today is Friday and it's gone. Both times were because chocolate and junk goes down like I have no sleeve, and I made the choice to eat anything I wanted. The good news is, as soon as I go back to my Protein first and veggies if there is room, the weight just falls back off. I love that a little bit of food keeps me full all day. I love that it keeps me so full, I don't even want sweets or junk. I love that for the first time in my life, I have control 99% of the time, and when I do want to throw caution to the wind, the sleeve prevents me from just gaining more and more. I am happier than I have been in years!

Oh the doubts!
The stomach is not bypassed with a gastric bypass. Part of the intestines are bypassed and sewed to a smaller stomach. They make a "pouch" from a different part of the stomach ( which is still stretchy) than the part of our stomach that remains. The part of our stomach that remains is the muscular part of the stomach that does not stretch very much. I am 18 months post op. My daughter had gastric bypass and she can eat at least 4 times more than I can eat. My stomach is stretched all that it's going to stretch at this point.

Infuriating Marie Claire blog about fat people on TV
I just saw this on the E channel and how much coverage this is now getting. This woman is really getting called out for her actions all over the TV now!

HOW DO I DEAL WITH MY DAUGHTER????
I would have told you to exercise/walk/zumba together too, but you didn't give her age. My daughter and I have had some really great talks about weight and image, etc. I asked her age because you don't look old enough to have a teenager! I will be rooting for both of you!

Typical meals
I eat out a lot so I have a lot of left overs that I eat for lunch. I am with everyone else on this as far as tuna, egg salad, chicken salad or deli meat. I take deli meat and I smear on laughing cow cheese and wrap it around a cheese stick. Sometimes I buy those frozen meals and eat most of the meat and some of the veggies. It's really not hard to eat with the sleeve. I basically eat anything I feel like eating. I rarely cook but occasionally I will cook up some ground turkey and put taco seasoning on it and mix in sour cream..

Oh the doubts!
There are so many people who have had gastric bypass and gained their weight back. The gastric bypass stomach stretches out and the malabsorption of calories does not last forever. I know a lot of people who have gastric bypass who wish they could get the sleeve now. There are plenty of people who have gotten down to goal weight with the sleeve as a stand alone procedure but you could always revise to a DS like the above poster suggested.

HOW DO I DEAL WITH MY DAUGHTER????
How old is your daughter? Mine had gastric bypass before I did. That was how I found out about the band, from going to her support group. Then I ended up revising to a sleeve. Maybe someday, she can have WLS too. Nobody should have to struggle if it's at all possible to get WLS.

Staples come out post-op??
No, you don't have to worry about leaks for the rest of your life! Scar tissue forms around the staple line, and once you are healed and the scar tissue forms, the risk of a leak is gone.

Not wanting to eat
It's really important to concentrate on fluids right now while you are healing. It's very easy to become dehydrated. There have been a lot of people in the past who have posted about having to be hospitalized to get IV fluids. It's a very vicious cycle because when you get dehydrated, then you get nauseous. I know everyone wants to get their Protein in, but if you have a choice between fluids and protein shakes, go with the fluids. You can have poweraide and gatoriade instead of Water. The protein will come later, when it gets easier.

what do I do with unflavored protien powder?
I use Stevia in my plain Greek yogurt and mix in blueberries and it's delicious. As far as the unflavored Protein powder, I mixed it in sf gatoraide, sf poweradie, sf Hawaiian punch, and Crystal lite.

way too much advertising...
Thank you so much! That other screen really sucked and I have been spending way more time at OH cause I could not stand it!

Nightline story on VSG tonight.
I thought it was pretty good . It did say that the sleeve will become the surgery of choice. I didn't like the way that they said that it was so new that there could be long term effects that we don't know about yet.
-
can anyone tell me the best way to utilize unflavored protien powder?
I put it in sf Gatoraide , sf Power Aide , Crystal Lite, sf Hawaiian Punch etc
-
My choice
Try to walk around as much as you can. That will get the gas moving out. Take miralax if you need to. It's not gritty and it's pretty much tasteless. Don't worry focus on Protein as much as you focus on getting some kind of liquids down. Look at before and after pictures when you feel down to see how great you're going to look soon! Things get better every day!

Who's see Dr. Alberto Aceves-Mexicali?
I never had a problem with anyone not being able to speak English. The nurses that work in the middle of the night don't speak English as well, but I never had any trouble understanding them, or having them understand me.

Reading Protein Powder labels
BSN Lean Dessert is a Protein powder. It comes in chocolate, cinnamon bun, chocolate fudge pudding (which is a little thicker than the regular chocolate,) banana bread, banana pudding, (same thing it's a little thicker,) vanilla, and chocolate coconut. There maybe some other flavors that I don't remember. I get it at vitacost.com . Their shipping is 4.99 for no matter how much you order, If you go to the food section forum, there is a thread for places to order samples of all sorts of protein powders . That is what I would do, before I bought a lot of anything. BSN has some samples available if you go to that thread.

Protein for Clear and Full
You can buy it online, at Netrition.com . Their shipping is 4.99 for no matter how much stuff you order. You can buy it at GNC and I believe the Vitamin Shop carries them too. I am sure some other people will say where they got theirs. A lot of people don't like it, so if you can get it at GNC, that would be good because as long as you save the receipt, you can return it.
