    Fat people in movies

I think there's a line we tread as women, as American woman (pardon me other women, but speaking from my own experience here to my yankee sisters) who are or have been of size, between fat acceptance and a desire to not be fat. Certainly there's a place for advocacy for fat people. We/they are not any less human because of our/their size. Treating someone as less than because they are different isn't okay on any level. But it's still considered reasonable to treat fat folk badly. We question fat folk advocating for themselves and we question them laughing at their own pain. It's institutionalized to the point that a self loathing fat person thinks they deserve to hate themself and they deserve the scorn of others. I don't have the answer...but talking about bad media, pizza Hut had a commercial where the baby sitter was ordering pizzas on the phone and the chubby boy walked in and she said, "Better add to the order." Because he obviously was going to eat vastly more than what she had ordered. I called the company and complained. Didn't get very far, but I feel better for it.

    I'm finally home!

Hi all, For those who don't know me, I live in Sydney and was banded on 15th January. 1 week after surgery, I had a stroke. Nobody knows whether it was related to my surgery or not, given that I have a problem heart and a clotting disorder. I have been in hospital ever since, but finally came home yesterday after spending 2 months in rehab. I can walk with a walking stick, but have lost the use of my left arm. I can move it, but my fingers don't work at the moment and I can't do anything useful with it. I don't want to scare anyone out of banding, it probably wasn't the cause of my stroke. I've lost 22kg and I'm prepared to make the most of my life. I don't regret my operation - don't get me wrong, there were times I wondered what I had done, but there is no clear reason for what happened. Please pray for my arm to come back, it's the only thing holding me back now -I can't drive anymore, have to go back to my L's and get a new car that is automatic. So good to be home! Jen:confused_smile:

    Interesting/Motivating facts

Copied this from "The Cardiologist's Wife's chocolate Too Diet: No Sugar, No Fat & Luscious." It's from the updated health information in the first section. Here goes: "1. Your blood sugar drops with just a 1-pound weight loss. In fact, with just the first ounces off, you’ve made yourself immediately healthier. (Overweight is also a huge risk factor for breast and ovarian cancer in women, prostate cancer in men, and colon cancer in both men and women.) 2. Your heart, which is the size of your closed fist, is a small, overworked muscle, pumping 24/7. And for every extra pound of fat you carry, your body has to grow seven new miles of blood vessels-- primarily capillaries but also small arteries (arterioles) and small veins (venules) -- and your heart has to work that much harder. Put on two pounds and that’s fourteen new miles of blood vessels; fifty extra pounds requires 350 miles of new blood vessels. On and on, do the math. But good news: the opposite is true. For every pound of fat you lose, your body sheds seven miles of blood vessels. They just re-absorb, break down, and get excreted. Lose two pounds and that’s fourteen miles of blood vessels gone, lightening your heart’s load. I’ve told you these two things so you’ll know that even a little is a lot. Repeat that out loud to yourself: even a little is a lot. Let it be your mantra. Because dieting is a slooow process, like watching the grass grow. Try to accept that, and the next time you catch yourself groaning, “Oh it’s almost a week and I’ve only lost two pounds” – understand that that’s good. You’ve already brought valuable change to your body; taken a literal load off your heart. Try this too for reinforcement: take a can off the shelf that weighs one or two pounds, and heft it. Or, in the supermarket, keeping your elbow straight, lift some wrapped meat weighing two pounds. It’s heavy. And you’ll think, Wow, I lost this much?" And another fun fact for every 1 pound you lose, you take 4 pounds of pressure off your knees. Wow, my knees are feeling 124 pounds lighter.

Should I ask to get a removal?

Hey, do what ya gotta do. You don't owe any of us an apology. And I don't think you'd have to leave this board, no matter what you decide to do. Information is knowledge is power, so let everybody here in on what you're going through. Good luck.

    Texarkana Bandsters

Hi everybody. Amy got back in touch with me today. She said that she was not entirely familiar with the test tube protein issue, and wanted me to bring her a sample to look at. So, next time I have a "lull" in my sleep lab schedule, I'll bring her a sample. She went on to say that whole food proteins are the best, and whey protein is probably the next best thing to whole. It made the issue as clear as mud.......maybe it'll help some of y'all. When I can bring her some liquid protein, I'll let everybody know what she says about it.

    Fat people in movies

Phatt Girlz - Real Woman Have Curves - one of my favorite movies on the subject. I think to embrace a realistic body VS "fat humor" is more my taste. I always felt the "cringe" while watching Chris Farley / John Candy in their SNL / Second City skits...They always pushed the physcial comedy at their expense. Just left me sad.

    Fat people in movies

Do you remember the movie with jack black? The one where he saw the big girl as gwenneth paltrow. She said everyday she wore the fat suit she wanted to cry because of the way people looked at her. Anyway, in that movie every chair she sat in she broke and she would just get right back up, get a bigger chair and keep eating. Like THAT would ever happen. That movie actually sickened me. Fat prejudice and jokes are one of the last form of accepted prejudice. Hopefully one day it will be elimanated too.

well, i respectfully disagree. I don't think its acceptable to do it. I strongly dont think that its ok to do it, and i do not think that someone who's doctor didnt tell them about PB's who comes here to ask, should expect to be met with such contempt. no one is required to answer newbie posts. if you don't want to answer them, then just leave them be for people who do want to give back.

    Just getting started in Richmond

Good morning CHris, I was approved on March 20 and my surgery is scheduled on May 14th. That was Dr. Bautista's next available. It took me from September to March to get approved though. Good luck. The time actually passed fairly quickly. I have Cigna and I think they are worst for approvals especially with a 37 BMI and 2 comorbidities. Good luck. Susie
