Post-Op Bloodwork / tests

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow bandsters

I have been banded 2.5 months and I'm feeling FABULOUS! The weight has been coming off pretty consistently (except for a two week period where I plateau'ed, but then got a fill and started losing again).

I went to go see my family doctor to get a prescription refill, and he had asked me if I know of any blood tests that I should be doing. At first I thought that was an odd question, since I would think I should be asking him that question. However, it made me think that maybe I should be. so, I called my surgeon the next day and asked him - he said that there aren't any tests we need to do, other than if we have some problems. Again, at first, I thought that was an acceptable response. However, after reading a NAWLS e-book, and doing a bit of research online, I have found out that some things like Vitamin B1 deficiency can result in permanent neurological deficits (including the loss of the ability to walk) and that there aren't too many warning signs and that once you have the problem, it can't be reversed. So, I wonder how many other things like this exist out there that I should be looking out for?

So, my question is: Do any of you get blood work? and if so, could you please let me know what you get tested for (obviously weight loss related only.. don't need to know about tests for other reasons)??? I live in Canada so the tests are free if my doctor recommends that I get them done. THANKS!!!

I hope you are all doing great!

I haven't yet but my surgeon definitely requires it. 10 days prior to my 3 month post op is the first set and he requires a CBC, Chem Panel, Lipid Panel, Vitamin D, Vitamin B-12, Thiamine B-1, Folate and Iron. It says make sure these are ALL drawn, none are optional. I think I have to get my blood drawn then again at 9 months.

Even if your surgeon doesn't require it I would think it would be a good idea to get your PCP to do the tests anyway. If nothing else it would be good to see your numbers improve and as you said ensure there are no deficiencies.

All my best, Kimberly

My doctor doesn't order post-op blood work until one year after surgery, or earlier, if a patient seems to be having problems. I had my one year labs done in September and everything came back normal. I asked at my next appointment just what was tested, and it was a list a mile long. I'm sorry I don't remember all the tests though. but it seemed very thorough.

As you know, we don't have malabsorption issues from our surgery, but we are eating small meals, so I think it's very important to take a multi vitamin/mineral and Calcium. I also added B12 after a few months, when I started feeling tired. I add a Vitamin D suppliment during the winter months.

The above looks to be about the same as what my surgeon does. All I know is they take like 12 vials of blood....ewe!

I would seriously look into it because as we eat so little it is easy to become deficient.

Lucky for you, your PCP is more than willing to work with you!

My PCP does regular Chem 20 profile every six months. My numbers are in great shape and I am in the process of being taken off some of my B/P meds already.

Thank you all so very much. I have called my doc to make an appointment, and will bring him the list of tests you have given me - and hopefully we can figure out which ones he and I think would be worth doing. I am also thinking about starting to take Vitamin B-12 supplements as I have been pretty tired the past two weeks.

Cheers

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
