Day 6 Post Op and wonder what and why I did this!!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I had surgery 12/1(tuesday) and thought I was lucky the first couple days...no gas pain, I could sleep on my side...thought it was great!! Now today and yesterday have been a nightmare!!! I haven't been able to drink much, feel nausea/hunger/full/pressure, not much of an appetite even thou i'm hungry. I've been eating pureed foods as i'm allowed and drinking a Protein Shake daily. Yesterday I couldn't even drink my shake, had mashed potatoes and pudding. Today was yogurt and pureed chili. I haven't been able to drink a liter today!!! I haven't taken any pain meds for 3 days or so..i'm just still a little sore at the sites.

So of couse today, being dehydrated and feeling miserable, I question myself--WHY have I done this to myself!!!

I know I want it and don't regret it, just want to know if this is normal?!?!? When I walk around my stomach just gurgles around. I made the mistake of taking a laxative last night and felt it all day today  beginning to wonder if that has something to do with it!!!

Anyway if your still reading, I appreciate it. I def. need some support right now!!! I know this is just the beginning of the journey and hoping it gets better. If you have any ideas or tips that can help this "sick" feeling please let me know...

Thanks

Randi:confused:

Randi,

All is normal, I too had those same strange feelings. It was like "Am I hungry, or is that gas pains or am I not hungry?" I am only surprised that you are on pureed foods already. I couldnt have anything but broth and Protein Shakes for two weeks then pureed stuff. Also remember that right now its all about the healing of your body. It will all pass and be a faint memory. After about the first 6 weeks, you will look back and be so glad you did this. Its the best thing I have ever done for myself!

Good luck and keep us posted,

Deanna

You can eat mushie foods just a few days out of surgery?? Wow, I was on a clear liquid diet for two weeks plus 3 Protein Shakes a day. Prehaps you are feeling the upset tummy from food. Talk to your doctor, but remember you just put your body through MAJOR surgery and it will take time to heal. When I had surgery, felt ok the day of and the next two days, but day 3 I awoke to feeling like a mac truck hit me then backed up and hit me again. I just took the time to lay around, rest and relax to let me body heal. I was a slug for a couple of days even though I felt better, just to give my body a rest it so deserved.

One of my nurses told me to expect this. She said the first few days are kind of easy. I had my surgery on Monday and she told me to expect a "bad day" on Friday or Saturday. She was right and you are right on schedule

My stomach is gurgling and I am having some gas pains too, but I find that the GasX strips. Since you never know when it will hit, keep them close. I found some TUMS Quick Paks today at Dollar Tree. They remind me of pixie or lik-m-stiks. The powder just dissolves on your tongue. Don't be afraid of your pain meds, either. That's what they are there for.

Hang in there!

You are normal! Don't give up. Walk, walk, walk. I am surprised that you're on the mushies so soon, however. I was on Clear Liquids for 3-4 days, then full liquids for 10 days, and then moved on to solids. You really need to talk with your doctor or nutritionist to make sure you are on the right eating program. You don't want the stomach to over work while it's in a healing mode.

I promise you that in about 4-6 weeks you will be a newer person and be so happy you did this. It's worth it. So hang in there until it gets better for you.

I was banded on 12/3 and I feel the same way. Like what did I get myself into. I know it will change but being in the current moment sucks. I'm craving regular food and tonight I am feeling nauseated and don't know why. Back is killing me as well. Uurrghh

Hang in there! I was banded on the 3rd and I think the gas pain is the worst! Keep walking. I'm going to try to make laps inside today (it's snowing outside).

I think this is like the early stages of pregnancy. Misery! But in the end it's worth it and when you look back on it, it won't seem so bad. At least that's what I hope! :-)

This is completely normal. Everyone has different restriction post-op. For example, by day 6 I was as hungry as I'd ever been and fluids were not helping. When I had my post-op appt he moved me to the next stage in the post-op diet. He said that everyone's inflamation period lasts different. Some stay restricted after a month and some just a few days.

The first few days after surgery I felt very similar to you. I thought to myself "I paid $15k of my own money to have this done to myself??? Was I nuts?" But, it got better and now I feel very normal, like nothing was done to me.

Omg - i was about to start a thread with the same title. I'm feeling miserable too.

I started thinking about this thing in my body that I added in there for no reason. I don't know what's wrong with me!

Thank you creating this and I'm starting to feel better to know I'm not alone in this.

It's very scary right now. I jumped into this decision and I'm so scared about the whole thing now. I am the "regret" stage of this all. =(

I haven't felt hungry since surgery, I got banded 12/3. When will I start to feel hungry?

I truly understand your pain. And it's GREAT to know this support is here. My hubby was banded 10/23 and I was banded 12/4 and so far, our experiences are different. I don't believe I have as much swelling as he does, because I DO get hungry. I am on liquids for an entire week, then mushies, starting THIS Friday. I already have my meal planned. :-)

My first couple of days were all gravy baby, but TODAY, is an entirely different story. This gas is SO painful I want to cry. My husband keeps telling me to walk and it only helps a little. I have the chewable Gas-X which don't seem to be helping a great deal. I just want to sleep, but I have an 8 month old baby that wants to beat mama in her tummy.

I am SO loving this site right now and it sure feels good to know that I am not alone!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
