Change of Heart

I've been looking into Gastric Bypass or Lap Band for the last 2+ years. I finally decided to pull the trigger. I was 110% focused on having lap band. Yesterday, I went in for my first consult with the surgeon, nutritionist, and dietician...and by the time I left I had completely changed my mind and decided on Gastric Bypass. I'm not usually so wishy-washy with big decisions like that. The only thing from holding me back before was the fact that there is a national average mortality rate of 1 in 200. That seems like a LOT to me. While I realize that a lot of surgeries probably carry that same mortality rate -- it still just kept me from wanting gastric bypass. I was very pleased to find out that my surgeon's entire practice has only lost 5 people in 9 years. All of those were due to that patient's own health problems that were not directly related to surgery. SOOO, with all of that being said - at this point I'm just waiting for my pre-op appointment and prior approval. There is a tentative surgery date of Dec 21!! :frown:  :)

Words can not even express my excitement. I don't know why I put this off so long but I do know that 12-18 months from now, I'm going to be 100 times healthier. I aspire to be one of those skinny bitches I hate so much :P

Anyway, thanks for reading for those that have. I just wanted to share my story so far!

Soon, you'll be seeing a lot more (or rather LESS) of me as I'm sure I'll have a million questions I didn't think to ask before the surgery.

Congrats on your decision, it is a hard one and we each have to really consider our lifestyle before making our decision. I had my surgery in late may and have just hit 50 lbs lost, my gf had gastric bypass in August and has lost 70lbs, so she has gone way past me very quickly. Each procedure has its advantages and disadvantages so only you and your doctor can decide which is right for you. Good luck.

Good luck with your impending surgery! I've had both surgeries and had no luck with the lap band but have been successful so far with the gastric bypass. I hope you will be too! Nancy.

People have the WRONG idea about the Bypass. It's a time-proven, effective procedure that is safe and it works very, very well if the patient is committed to making the life-changes required. A lot of people bad-mouth the Bypass, but i have discovered that they do not know what they are talking about. So, Good for you, and I look forward to reading about your success!

I am in the exact same boat as you. I just had my consult and I was set on the band, but after talking to 2 different surgeons they told me I would be so better off doing bypass rather than band. So let me know how it goes for you.

Have you undecided pple - ck'd the sleeve - it's another option and you don't have the absorption issues that you can have from bypass.. It's another opinion

For me I am happy with my band - I'm lucky I would say as I got to sweet spot fast and haven't had any issue (thank God and knock wood too ;0)- any wls is a crap shoot on what will be the best choice for you and none of it is the magic cure to our issues with food.. They all require work..

Good Luck to you all.

Nancy - so glad you are doing so well with your bypass - I'm happy for you !!! I truly think that for some pple bypass is the answer - I'm not one of those banders who think the band is the only answer - it really is about what works and is the best for the individual person..

ok...1) open mouth 2) insert foot.

after much consideration i decided to go back to my inital decision of having lap band. i'm certain that with a lot of hard work i will eventually get to the same place. determination is key -- and if i'm going to have surgery for weight loss, i'm not letting myself fail.

sooo..one week from tomorrow i will be banded and i couldn't be happier about it!

Thanks Indiogirl,

I really needed to have this procedure done to get the results a lot of bandsters can have. Hope you're doing well, Nancy.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
