Has anyone cheated on there post op diet?

Recommended Posts

Those first few weeks are tough. My Dr. wanted me on liquids for 3 full weeks. But there are liquids and there are liquids. I found the Isopure protien powders to actually taste good. The banana flavor with skim milk is really tasty. And if you blend it with 1/2 a real banana its almost a treat.

If you Dr allows thicker liquids smooth Soups like Tomato might be OK. And even something like Farina. But I'm not your doctor - do what he tells you. Its really important to let yourself heal properly or you're risking worse complications down the road.

Its hard but everyone here has gone through the same thing. And we're alive to talk about it so you can do it as well. And once you start seeing some weight loss it will all have been worth it.

I was supposed to be on liquids only for 4 weeks - 2 weeks into it, I couldn't stand it anymore. I ate some oatmeal and that went down ok, then I ate some scrambled eggs. They went down fine also. And cottage cheese. I got my band on Oct 1 (3 weeks ago) and I got on the scale yesterday and gained a lb! I'm truly not eating very much, but after drinking and eating nothin but poscicles and Jello, I guess anything I eat will make me gain. If I had to do it all over again, I would have stuck to the liquids. I feel so stupid.

Blessings!

It is so strange to me that we all get different advice from our surgeons. I realize that everyone has a "case-by-case" diet that they will need to follow, but for me it was so different.

A group of us had to go to a "Pre-Op-Lap-band®-201 class" which was the final "process" right before surgery. There where at least 25 people in that class. All of us where given a packet and we where told to follow the instructions in the packet.

Basically it said..after surgery..liquids for 3wks..mushies for 1wk....then introduce reg food. 1cup only each meal. In the liquid phase i was able to eat Cream/soups..Cream of Potato, Cream of mushroom..Oatmeal..cream of wheat....Jello...sugar free pudding... It didn't seem that bad. I felt like i was eating half way decent food.< /p>

I guess what I am trying to say is, you might want to check with your doc.. and ask if those things are okay?

Hope this helps.

Saying no to a students candy is like telling them they are stupid ( bad bad bad in Korea). So I dont have a choice. My co-teacher likes me after having this surgery because after class I always come into the office with some new things for her to eat.

Or an opportunity to teach them about other cultures.

It is hard, but stick to it - remember at this point it's about your stomach healing properly. You don't want to sabotage that!

The first two weeks were the hardest. I think by the second week I was eating Egg Beaters. Which was great, because it was easy to chew and it was warm. I missed warm food so badly. I couldnt deal with creamed Soup after the first time I ate it.

The following four weeks after that were hard too because I still couldn't eat fruits and veggies yet. All I wanted was green grapes. The minute the nutritionist cleared me for fruits and veggies and ran and bought grapes. Its so funny how your outlook changes about food when you are restricted. Having said that, I was also dying for pizza. But that wasn't on my diet. So I secretly bought (I mean I live alone, how secret did I have to be?? but I never told anyone this) mini pizza Bagels and I think i made one or two in my toaster oven. And cut it up real small and chewed chewed chewed!! And look, I didnt explode! It helped with the craving, to just have SOMETHING but not binge on it, you know?

My surgery was in June and I'm down 52lbs so I must be doing something right. I hate the term "cheating" mostly because I doubt there are folks that do everything exactly like they are supposed to. I mean, I've had birthday cake when my nephew turned 5. It wasn't a huge piece like I used to eat. And I didnt go back for seconds. But it was a treat. And I made sure I ate good otherwise and exercised. And again, I'm still able to lose weight.

So don't torture yourself. BUT having said that...you need to hang in there....It's early yet. The first two weeks sucked. Hell the first month sucked. (I must've asked "WHY didi I do this?" a hundred million times) But now I'm so glad I did. This is how I should've been eating all along. I went 33 years eating whatever I wanted when I wanted. And the only place that got me was fat. So...now I'm eating heatlhy. And by no means am I starving.

I was banded on the Oct. 16. I'm starving too. I called my doctor & he said I can start on pureed food Saturday. So I can't wait. Every doctor is different though. Potato Soup minus the potatos is great.

In theory you mustn't 'cheat' but in reality... I ate a T Bone steak and a whole plate of Pasta within the three weeks post op phase. Very naughty and in hind sight I am lucky nothing bad happened.. but it was bloody good....I am 13 months post op now and have lost over 100 pounds... we all may have the band in common but we're all individuals and we all make mistakes and each of our 'journeys' are unique! Good luck to you all - all the best!

I cheated (with two tea-spoons of eggplant relish) and regretted it greatly - it got stuck for hours on end and the discomfort and pain was close to unbearable.

I don't actually regret it, though - it taught me a lesson. No food is worth feeling that horrible and I haven't cheated since.

I have been quite good since op on 18th sept 09 but since moving to mushy i am not eating well, i even had some peanuts as i felt i could make them mushy! i have decided the key is in the planning. shopping and keeping a store of good food in the house so not to snack on my old favourites. so after have some eaton mess last night as it was mushy i was so upset with myself i plan to shop today properly. its been a tough week. i have realised this is the point i have to make a true lifestyle change and get some activity into my life. ANy advice welcome. Good luck to us all

I was banded Oct. 21st. I'm on day 3 after surgery and doing good,,, experencing a lot of the air pain they talk about in my chest and shoulder,,, so with this going on, I don't know if it's hunger I feel or the air pain. I smelled food last night and had that feeling of how good it would taste,,, but for me, the thought of something getting in there and not passing and causing me to throw up,,, can't handle that,,, I HATE to throw up and I can't even imaging the pain it would cause for me in the port site. For those reasons,,, for me,,, it's keeping me true to the liquids,,, too scared to throw up.

I pray that we all do good with the decisions we have made,,, it's not easy for sure, I was crying the day after surgery wondering why I had done this to myself,,, but a month from now, when we can all taste a little of this and that at Thanksgiving and we are thinner,,, we will not remember all this yukky stuff! :-)

I was banded Oct 8, and my surgeon prescribed a two-week pre op and four-week post op liquid (read: Protein shake) diet. Frankly, I can't stand it anymore.

I feel like I'm cheating because I'm "eating" stuff like cream of potato Soup and V8 broccoli soup that I've blended smooth with a stick blender, or maybe a serving of plain fat free yogurt. I've been having a serving of that type of thing once a day for the past several days because If I don't, I starve myself. The serving of soup or yogurt satisfies me enough to gag down a couple of Protein shakes a day. Either way, I'm not getting as much Protein in as the dr orders.

I made a batch of instant mashed potatoes a few days ago and ate one bite -- but then I got scared something would happen and felt guilty so I threw the rest away.:blushing:

My "transition to solids" class is this Wednesday (three-weeks post op) and I fully intend to begin mushies immediately rather than endure a fourth week of post op liquid.< /span>

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
