Airplanes and the Band

Recommended Posts

Last week I went to Chicago for a seminar. When I got there I could barely get anything down but it got better as the week went on. Now I have returned I am even tighter. What happened? Has anyone else experienced this or is there something else going on with me? One other thing is that I am sore where my stomach is. Not when I touch it but if I cough, laugh or hit a bump while driving. And help or info would be appreciated :cry

I haven't experienced it first hand, only because I dont fly anywhere...but my doctor did discuss this with me when I told him of my upcoming vacation....a while back.... He did say if you fly, expect restriction to increase. The cabin pressure has some kind effect on the band. I said, we are driving, not flying so he didn't go into any more details, but he did say that was a normal effect of flying with the band.

Sorry I couldnt help you any further....but just wanted to share my conversation with my surgeon...hes awesome!!

My surgeon doesn't see a rational explanation for the phenomenon, but there's no question it happens to a lot of people. My theory is that it has something to do with Water retention--our inner organs may swell with air travel in the same way that our ankles and fingers do.

I definitely experienced it when I traveled to CA this summer, and it was part of the reason I got so irritated while I was there. Respect your new restriction and don't try to force anything! It will pass, and maybe you will have lost a couple of pounds in the meantime. :)

I just got back from a vacation and not only did I fly, I was at my friend's codo at 9000 feet up in the New Mexico mountains. Wow did I have awesome restriction. Only PB'd once because I had to get REALLY careful.

Last time this happened to me, after a day or two, the "old" level of restriction returned. Sad day. So yes it happens, your own little internal barometer...but it will go away.

Thanks for the info. I talked to my doctor yesterday and he said he had no explanation why this would have happened.

Alex, I am going to take your advice and try to lose a couple of pounds.

I always get tighter when I fly. I've pretty much gotten used to the idea that if I fly, anything that I eat on the flight or shortly after it, will be liquid or soft mushie. Couldn't tell you why it happens, but it does. :)

My feet and ankles always swell up when I fly. It kind of makes sense that ALL of the body tissues would do the same thing - so the band would feel tighter.

Thanks for the heads up on this. Hopefully, this will be important info for me, soon!

:]

DJ,

Just be careful when you first eat. I was so tight I had two forks full and was about to lose my mind, serious backup. Have a good trip.

:Hey! NIce to hear from someone who appreciates the beauty in "the land of enchantmant"! I am going to Ojo Caliente, halfway between Santa Fe and Taos. I go twice a year and stay 10 days each time. I like to think of it as my home away from home. I heard it was pretty cold up there at this time. I always take layered clothing cuz ya never know what the weather is going to do. I love it!!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
