I was stuck but now I am really concerned

Recommended Posts

I ate a small piece of steak last night and i must have not chewed it well because I got stuck. It was really bad and took about 2 hours to finally pass. I threw up about 6 times during that time.

This morning I went to drink my regular coffee and I am gurgling really badly. It feels like my restriction has suddenly jumped. I would surmise from other posts that I am very swollen following my episode. Is that probably true?

Can anyone tell me what the expected time it should take for this to resolve? Am I wrong for thinking that this is the issue? Could one episode of vomiting really done something like slipped my band?

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. It is the weekend and I don't know if I can reach anyone at my drs. office.

only time will tell. Drink hot liquids (when you can), it help's with the swelling from vomiting.

and don't try to each too much now. wait a bit and try later.

if you don't feel better soon, call the DR

So sorry to hear you had such a bad episode. I know it had to be painful. It's very unlikely you did any permanent damage just one time of being stuck. Sam's advice on how to handle the swelling is what I would do too.

Also, if you don't have it, buy some papaya enzyme (chewable pills). Papaya naturally breaks down Protein, and when I've had a hard time with a particularly tough piece of chicken it worked wonders. Although, I've very rarely had any problems with meat, after the chicken incident, I have those papaya pills with me all the time, and I've used them a few times when a meat I've eaten felt tight going down.

Mine came from Trader Joe's, but I think you can find them at Vitamin shops, and maybe even Walmart or online. They're inexpensive, and if they work for you (if you ever get stuck on meat again), they're worth every penny and more.

I hope you feel better soon.

I can't imagine eating anything right now. I am scared to try more liquids as I threw up the coffee. I will try some plain hot Water in an hour.

Stay on liquids this weekend and I have heard it recommended to take children's motrin. It will reduce the swelling. No matter what, you should probably call your doctor on Monday morning. Good luck.

Oh, and if at any point you can't keep liquids down, immediately call and get unfilled.

Thanks. I am sipping hot Water and while it feels ok i can still hear the gurgling. Hopefully this will pass soon.

I just spoke to the dr on call. He said that if I could not keep liquid down I had to come in right away. But as long as I could sip hot liquids to just wait it out to see if the swelling would go down. I will go out and try to get the liquid motrin.

Upperwestside, I am sorry for your swelling and you have gotten lots of great advice. It is amazing that one severe stuck episode can wreak so much havoc, but it happened to me, too. I wish you the best of luck and please keep posting so we know how you are doing.

Mimi

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
