I finally got it thru my thick head

Recommended Posts

That I should eat very small portions!! It took me a year to get it thru my hard head, but I am finally eating the amount I should. I swear eating in a restaurant they give you 3-4 times what fits in your stoma. It's hard because we eat out alot.

Anyone else have a hard time eating too much?

First congratulations on beating the beast. You are right, portions and prices are out of control. I still haven't completely won the battle of small bites, portions, and chew chew chew, but I do end up with 2 or three meals from thr restaurant leftovers!!!!

Best wishes,

Mimi

Portions are unusally not my problem, as I eat home most of the time and only put out bandster size portions. Its the small bites and chewing that I have a problem with. If I'm eating a piece of meat that I can cut, I'm usually okay. But if its something I bite into - like a wrap or piece of toast, I always find myself with a mouthful. I think I need to be more selective in my eating choices, as obviously my brain is not in control.

 Good for you...I'm over 3yrs out and still haven't got it through my thick skull that I need to slow down and take smaller bites. Guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but I'm pluggin' away at it.

Keep up the good work and best of luck to you. Joanie )

Restaurants do serve outrageous portions....many have anough meat in a dinner to more than meet your Protein needs for an entire day, and we won't talk about the fat, salt and carbs! Read restaurant reviews...and I'd say that more than half comment on the size of the portions, usually to praise the 'hearty' portions.

I always read the appetizer selections first. Many, many times, there is enough in an appetizer to make a meal, or if I order a vegetable to go with it, I'm in business.

Restaurants have contributed to obesity in America in their own way, by helping (enabling) people to think that a portion like that is "normal". That's a hard thing to overcome. Often when I order a true dinner portion, I immediately cut my entree in half and push half the sides over with that and then get a "go box" .... and I have lunch or another dinner.

We do eat out quite a bit, and I was really worried that the surgery would mess up that part of my life (we enjoy eating out so I didn't want it to). But I've been doing pretty good. We went out for dinner last night. My older daughter and I split an entry. It was a nicer restaurant so portions were not that big (we got lobster ravioli and there were 6, so that's 3 ravioli each).

What I do (and thankfully my family is indulgent) is I get my variety by having a bite of this or a taste of that from their plates. Last night, I had a few bites of spinach, green Beans, mashed potatoes, and even dessert. Makes me feel like I had a well-rounded and plentiful meal (because I did!!!) even though I only ordered 3 ravioli.

wow ...103 lbs lost!!!!! There is hope for me yet..I,too, fight the small bites, chew-chew-chew part of the 'program'but keep on working at it...just 2 months into my journey, had my first fill last week, a bit of restriction but not as much as the nurse said I would feel after my 2nd next month..so I am working hard to add to my 23 lb loss..looking forward to my next fill!!! Maybe at age 64 my loss will be a bit slower but that is okay!!!!!! Thanks for the inspiration....it sure helps.

I had the same problem but it too me over a year to "get it through my thick head". My problem wasn't portions though..it was continuing to each candy and ice cream. It has been 2 months since I have had either one of those devils and I have lost 15 pounds in that time. I also finally started exercising and keeping a diet journal. It took awhile but I finally got it.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
