Port Pain--worried and need advice

Recommended Posts

Here's the 411:

I am 6.5 weeks post op with the 11cc realize band, got my first fill (4cc) on 9/11 and everything was going great until Thursday. I flew on Wednesday to visit realtives out of state, so that day I ate more challenging food then usual, but I was eating slow, chewing throughly, and it went down with no problems. And I made sure not to over eat. I also showed my family my scars and stretched to let them feel my port.

The next morning was ok and then when I went to get dressed I felt I felt a stitch in my port side. I went for a walk and it hurt worse. I called the doctor and they said that I most likely strained it and to just take it easy. I talked to a freind who said she sometimes feels that way when she eats too much or wrong. Anywho, I quickly ran to Walmart to get softer and safer food and have since only eaten that.

Today I felt a bit better, but it still hurts. I'm planning on going to the doctor as soon as I get home on Monday, but in the meantime I'm worryed that I pulled a stitch at the port area or worse yet, totally dislodged it. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen?

Thanks for any advice :blushing:

I have the Realize Band too, and occasionally I would have some port pain. I remember it happened once, after I was probably around four or five weeks post-op, during a long car ride and another time after stretching to feel my port. The Realize Band port is anchored by metal hooks not by stitches (unless your doctor anchored yours differently), so chances are you're just are sore from the trip and stretching.

I used to get port pain...little twinges here and there. My doc said it was scar tissue forming around the port. I'm 5 mths post opp and don't feel them anymore.

I sometimes get pain just above my port, that feels like a "stitch in the side"--it worried me at first, but over time, I realized it wasn't my port at all, but gas pain. I don't know if this is true, but I envision it as some gas caught in a spot that the surgery created. Like a corner that wasn't there before.

The realize port is clamped onto your abdominal wall muscle (the lap band port is stitched) and because it is in the muscle it takes longer to heal, and is more prone to soreness etc when you exert yourself or USE those muscles.

If it doesn't improve, call your doc with your concerns. Just realize that some pain is the "nature of the beast" when it comes to ports and healing. Even months post op, vigorous "different" activity etc can cause it to be a little sore.

I occasionally have port pain, feels like a stitch in my side. I do pilates 3 days a week, and that is a huge abs workout. Sometimes the day after a tougher workout is when I get the pain. It normally goes away in a couple days, and my Dr's assistant, says that the port pain happens when you use your abs alot.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
