I'm about 3 weeks out of surgery and I've been doing well. Last night I had some chicken and rice.......and I must have either eaten too much or something got caught because PAIN LIKE NO OTHER.

It is just a constant pain in my midsection and its been about 16 hours. I drank some Water and threw it back up. I've since had some tea and that went down fine.

Has anyone overeaten and had this kind of reaction? How long did it last for you? Ow

No sorry I haven't. I am also a little over 3 weeks post op. I did try to eat a bite of a flour tortilla and it hurt going down so bad. It felt like it was stuck and I had a terrible pain in my chest. I am not going to try that again anytime soon. The thing is the pain was short lived and was gone maybe 30 min or an hour later.

If you're still having pain and vomiting I would absolutely contact your doctor ASAP. Something is wrong.

I feel for you. I was told rice is a definite no-no because it swells up so much. I would call your doctor's office and talk to them. They can probably give you some good advice. Stay away from anything that swells in Water.< /p>

My guess is that the chicken was a bit on the dry side and got stuck and, for whatever reason, you didn't PB it and it had to move on its own. Now it's moved on but your esophagus got a bit irritated. Take it easy on what you eat today....keep it on the mushy side and the irritation should go away pretty quickly.

I've never had that kind of long term reaction, but it does sound to me like the chicken and rice got stuck and after passing left your band area swollen and irritated. I think it's a good idea to call your doctor's office for their opinion, particularly since your surgery was so recent, but I imagine you will be told to do two days of liquids and two days of soft foods to let your stomach rest and heal.

I agree with this I was told no rice or Pasta because it swells later. I know a lot of people eat it but I do not.

Is the pain in your port area? Everyone who is banded reacts differently, but if I overeat, I get really bad port pain and it hangs around for awhile.

I can eat rice just fine if I take my time and eat slow but I wasn't allowed to have solid food at 3 weeks out. Maybe you're pushing it a bit? I would cut back and try extra hard to listen to your body. Everyone has a cue to stop eating. You just need to pay attention to it. For me, it's pressure in my port or a hiccup. I know if I continue eating then, I'm gonna pay for it. Hope you feel better soon!

Seriously, go buy some Papaya Enzyme. Mine is the "NOW" brand formulated with cellulase (for veggie matter) and lipase (to emulsify fat) as well as papain (to digest protein) but I'm sure any brand will work.

Papain helps break down dead tissue so it won't erode your living stomach/esophagus. And IT WORKS. It's even used medically to debride (removed dead skin from) wounds in some instances. Don't mean to gross you out, just to tell you it does the trick.

If something is stuck like that, chew some papaya enzyme and give it about 5 minutes. It has never failed me and saved me from an hour over a sink trying to vomit, or hours of pain. I LOVE that stuff, I'm tempted to buy stock in it!

Have some on hand so that the next time something like this happens you won't have to be in misery for hours!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
