How much did you gain w/ your pregnancy after banding?

Recommended Posts

So I am a year post op and have lost 65....I love what I look like and feel like now, but I just found out I'm pregnant which was planned. I have about 20 pounds to my goal weight, which I will have to wait to reach. But I am kinda stressed about gaining too much weight. I was 30 pounds heavier that I am now when I got pregnant with my first baby, and I only gained 30 pounds with her, but now that I have lost all this weight I am worried about gaining too much weight. I'm about 8 weeks pregnant and feel really good, so I have not been unfilled yet. My doc said I wont need to until it becomes too tight.

So my question to everyone who got pregnant after banding is, how much weight did you gain during that pregnancy, and how quickly did you lose it?

Thanks for the support!

Shauna

Well, I don't think that I was at all typical but I gained over 80 pounds. I was at goal wiegh and became very anemic which all but halted any activity. I did get my fill taken out because of medications that I had to take thoughout my pregnancy. I will not have it taken out on my next pregnancy if I can help it. I have lost 70+ since the birth of my baby, but it has been very hard! I would not be paraniod about keeping my fill in next time around. Please don't let my story scare you, but I know that I wish i would have kept a closer eye on it myself. Good luck with your pregnancy!!!

I am 36 weeks today and have gained about 4 pounds. My OB told me I didn't need to get unfilled and could even get more fill if it helped me regulate my weight and the baby was growing well. I had very little restriction at the beginning of the pregnancy but now I am pretty restricted. Everything is going great, though, so I do not plan to unfill.

Shauna,

Im not pregnant yet but I totally have the same issues as you. I have lost almost 80lbs and would like to lose 40 more. I have been trying to get pregnant for the past few months but am scared to death of gaining too much weight. Before the band I had lost 100lbs on weight watchers and gained it all back when I got pregnant with my daugther. I hope I learned my lesson and will not let myself get out of control with eating this time around. Good luck with your pregnancy and try your best to eat healthy.

I am astounded at how many bandsters have gained so little weight during pregnancy. Well, I can tell you that for me, the lap band has been no match for pregnancy hormones which have kept me eating constantly up until this point (14 weeks). I have definitely gained a good amount of weight already and I still have my fill. I don't have much restriction although you'd think I would. Still, I don't want to develop a complex about it, so I'm trying not to make it a big deal. I am eating out of genuine physical hunger, not for emotional issues (which was the cause of my weight problems before)-- so I believe in doing what my body tells me to do.

I know that after my pregnancy, when all these hormones are out of my system and I have my normal energy back, I'll be back on track eating my tiny meals and working out like crazy. But I just refuse to obsess about weightloss/weight gain during pregnancy.

Thanks for your information and advise. I haven't gained any weight yet, but I'm also very nauseated and sick so throwing up has been a problem for me. This is exactly what happened with my first pregnancy, so I know its not the band. I hoping to weight until at least 5 months before I need an un-fill but if I continue to throw up after my 4th month I will have to get unfilled.

Did any of you guys work out the whole pregnancy to maintain a healthier you? I'm still working out when I'm not narcoleptic :tongue2: I have been so tired that sometimes I cant, but hopefully that will change.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
