Hi! New to the Board

Recommended Posts

HI! I am new to the board and so happy that I found this place.

I a patient of Dr. Kurian's in NY. The process has gone sooo smoothly. I met with her for the first time in mid august and I was scheduled for surgery tomorrow (10/4/05) My Dr. was late in getting the results of my P.A.T's though and I got a call on Friday from my Dr. saying that my EKG came back abnormal and that he couldn't give me medical clearnance without further testing. Yikes. I have never had any problems before, but heart disease does run in my family. Needless to say, no surgery tomorrow. :) and I am hopeful that it won't be anything too serious.

I was doubly disappointed, one in finding out that there might be something wrong with my heart and also in not being able to go through with the surgery. So anyway, instead of having surgery tomorrow, I am going for a thalium stress test and if all goes well, my band surgery will now take place on the 14th. I was so glad that I wasn't going to have to wait another couple of months.

I'm getting more and more nervous about the surgery and am jsut looking forward to getting it over with. I try to focus on life after the surgery instead of dwelling on the actual surgery itself.

Anyway, I am currently 240 pounds and am hoping to lose about 100 pounds. Although I will be hapy with anything! Losing weight has been such a struggle for me and I am looking forward to the help that the band offers.

Heart issues are scary, but be glad they found out before the surgery and then have something go wrong. It probably isn't anything big, or they would have slapped you in a hospital bed with oxygen and tubes everywhere. By any chance, do you smoke or have you ever smoked? If not, it's unlikely that it would be anything that serious. I'm glad they're checking everything out though, better to be safe than sorry.

They'll pretty much know tomorrow, although they won't have a report for a few days. Are you doing a walking stress test or a chemical stress test? The hardest thing about these stupid stress tests is having to lie on this very narrow machine with both of your arms over your head for like 20 minutes. Man my arms get sore when I have to do that. But other than that, they're not so bad.

Also, do you have diabetes? If so are you on insulin? I am only asking because if you don't smoke and don't have diabetes it might not be anything to worry about.

Please let us know how things are going. You can PM me if you need someone to talk to about this cardiac stuff, as you can tell I have some knowledge (understatement) of all of it. Been through more heart issues than I care to discuss, but they still banded me!! So it doesn't necessarilly exclude you as a canidate for being banded.

Welcome to the boards, lots of really nice and caring people here.

Cindy

Hi thanks for your response.

I don't smoke, although I did when I was younger. It's been about 17 years though since I smoked. When I had my blood tests done for my P.A.T's they found out that I am borderline diabetic (also runs in my family). My Dr. said it's a good thing that I'm getting this surgery now as these problems are just beginning.

I am having the Nuclear (thalium)stress test and I'm pretty sure it will be the walking test. I read up on it a bit, but I'm still not sure I know exactly what's involved. They said I will be there about 3 or 4 hours.

I will be sure to post how everything went.

Thanks so much!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
