What am i doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

thanks for reading my post. I can eat certain things fine and in copious quantities, like Cereal, soft veggies, fruit, crackers. Anything like chicken, bread, soft carbs-rice, etc. get stuck after 1 or 2 bites, and I am throwing up. Drinking makes it worse. What am I doing wrong here, or is this a case of avoiding the foods that make me sick? I know I need to slow down more, but is there anything else? I have had 2 fills since my surgery in June, and am at 3.7 cc in a 10 cc band.

Maybe I have irritated the area and need to do soft/liquid for a couple of days? I am very confused, it feels like every meal is a roller coaster and I am not sure if it will go fine or if this is the time I will be hovering over the sink...:)

thanks for any advice you have for me...

The bread and crackers could be messing you up. A lot of people can't tolerate them until much later. I've found I can't eat rice. Make sure your meat is moist, small, and well chewed. I make sure to count at least 20 chews before I try to swallow.

Good luck!

If you are throwing up, you may need to do liquids for a day or two to see if that helps. You could be swollen and eating the foods that are bothersome and then throwing up again, could be hurting you.

Make sure you are chewing your food thoroughly, until it is mush in your mouth. I tend to want to eat too fast and that is when I get stuck. Julia's hint of chewing each bite at least 20 times is a very good idea. It is also good to put your utensils down between bites.

I have certain foods that I can only have 1-2 bites and they will get stuck. I have learned what they are and try to avoid them. It is a process and you will find that some foods are good for you and your band and others are not!

Hope that helped!

Hi Mellicat.

I have the same exact problem. Some days I can't even drink anything without feeling discomfort or vomiting. I too, am from New Jersey. Was wondering who did your procedure. Dr. Nusbaum did mine. When I told him, he took all the Fluid out. I was so upset, but I was able to keep the food down. Didn't gain, didn't lose. Then filled me 1.5 cc and it started again. I don't know what's wrong!!! I get so frustrated. Please let me know how you are doing. Good Luck!

If you are chewing well and it is happening, then have it taken out again, let the swelling go down, and ask him to only give you 1 cc the next time. I have only had 2 fills of 1cc each.

I have to drink before I eat. I can't even think about putting food in, if I've not had at least 1/2 bottle of Water or Isopure clear Protein Drink. I take 2 very small bites and if things are painful, I wait up to 15 minutes to start eating again. Chew, Chew, Chew. I don't even try breads, but I can get a few bites of flour tortillas down. I can eat rice if it has sauce, so I usually only have rice with Thai red curry tofu, and it has to have lots of sauce. I can eat wheat thins, if I chew them well and have cheese on them. I've been sticking to mostly homemade chili, roast beef hash, tuna & egg salad, things like that. Even some of those I have problems with some days. Last week I was able to eat come grilled veggies, I was thrilled. Some people can never eat breads again. Some people can't eat a huge variety of things for 1 to 2 years, and I seem to be one of those. I'm going to try salad today, but if that doesn't go well, I'll try again in a month or 2. Go slow, don't try to eat everything you could before right away. Don't drink anything for 30 minutes to an hour after you eat, it's extremely painful if you do.

I eat almost anything that I want, just a lot less of it. I even eat bread. I eat whole wheat toasted bread, rolls, and biscuits. I also eat whole wheat Pasta. I have not, however, tried eating salad. If you are willing to get a small unfill, sometimes it only takes getting .25-.5ccs out, than you will probably be able to eat a wider variety of foods.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
