Band rules you consistently 'break'?

Recommended Posts

Like others have said, we all need to do what works for us.

I'm no longer on a 'diet' (yep, I've been thin many times...been up and down that yo-yo for too many years) and there is no food or drink that is off limits for me. I'm glad I was able to find a doc with the same philosophy (straws, carbonation-he says the 'stretching the pouch' thing is a bunch of bunk, alcohol, caffeine all are allowed after healing). Everything in moderation. If I had a bunch of off-limit foods/drink then I know I'd be feeling deprived and feeling like I was on yet another diet that I couldn't do forever. I don't feel deprived...sure I some weeks lose more slowly than others, like when I drank lots of alcohol on vacation last week, but it's a lifestyle I can live with forever and I'm still losing.

So, like others with not many rules, the only one I break sometimes is drinking with eating or too soon before/after meals, but even that doesn't usually effect how much I eat or how hungry I get.

Best wishes all!

I'm actually surprised at some of the very judgemental folks on this board. I couldn't care less if you folks are snacking between meals or drinking carbonated drinks. What do I care? As long as it's not sabotaging your weight loss.

As for me, the hardest thing not to do is drink while eating. I don't. I try to stop drinking at least 30minutes before. But it's hard.

And straws. Man....I've accidentally sipped out of a straw, and guess what? My stomach didn't explode!! I've been told not to use them. So I haven't. But since I've tried it and nothing happened, I think that I wouldn't mind breaking that rule at some points.

I'm still a newbie being just a hair under 6 weeks post op. The one thing I'm having the hardest time with is staying at 25 grams of fat per day or less. I try to follow it but never seem to stay within that limit. Hopefully as I get farther out I'll get better about doing it but right now I'm breaking that one a lot.

I have a problem with waiting the 30 minutes after eating to drink somethink and actually will clock watch but don't always make it. I will also order a drink when eating out if they have "to go" cups and take it with me.

Band groupie, I really like your philosophy. I live by the same thoughts, no diets for me anymore. The only problem is I have not lost any weight since about 8 months after surgery I am almost at a year now and have lost 50, but none in four months.

When some of you guys say "snacking" what type of snacking are you talking about. My nutritionalist suggest snacking. Thing like string cheese, Peanut Butter on crackers, cottage cheese, thing of that nature. Protein things. Now eating, what the army calls "Fatty Cakes" like Little Debbies and such is different.

Now I do struggle with drinking with meals only because I like spicy stuff. I always was one to almost drink more at dinner than eat. I have never been a fan of soda but really sweet tea was my choice. I stay away from that now and am the biggest fan of Water... I would go through atleast 2 1/2 glasses when going out to dinner. Now I just order Water and maybe drink 4 or 5 sips, so I think I am doing very well. I am almost 6 weeks post op and will be having my first fill next week and couldn't be more happy. Almost lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks. I must be doing something right!!!! Jennifer

I have to say a year after surgery my biggest issue is not drinking while I eat. I am getting better with it.

I don't have a problem with drinking with my meals, since my surgeon says a few SIPS won't hurt, as long as I can handle it. Also his instructions for stoping/starting before/after meals is 5 min before and 20 min after, which I find quite easy to follow.

When I snack, I try to have something w/protein and/or healthy, e.g. yougurt, Protein enriched pudding, fruit.< /p>

My doctor allows coffee, soda, alcohol, and popcorn, so I don't have to do without those (though I don't have as much of them now). But he discourages using a straw; I want to follow that rule, but never realize I've broken it until a few hours or even a day later! I don't eat/drink out that often though, and I never use a straw at home, so it's not as bad as it could be.

Get used to it--it's rampant here.

I truly thought I could never sit at a meal without one or two drinks--it's the easiest thing for me to do now, I have no idea how I do it either!

I use a straw and I was such a dork I even used it in front of my surgeon. (He didn't have to much sympathy for me after that).

I have never heard of the coffee thing either thank goodness or I would break that one every day.

I have stuck to most of the rules, but to be honest have broken a few as well. I have such a bad problem with eating slowly and have gotten stuck and sometimes can get past it other times I can't and it comes back up. I tried one of those mini cans of Pepsi Max, let it set for along while and put it over ice...didn't have a problem, but worry that it will mess up the band...so haven't tried another one. I'm a bit of scaredy cat when it comes to break some rules, because although I have had 2 cc's fill...I still have times I know I am eating way too much...but I can it doesnt bother me...makes me angry with myself. Then I have days when I think I am chewing really good and only eat alittle amount of food and it gets stuck. I never drink with my meals and when I get stuck it feels awful to try to sip even Water, that is when I usually get sick. I know I am trying to abide by the rules...eating healthier, drinking only 1/2 hr before and 1/2 to 1 hour after. But I think my problem is getting to that point where I can slow down and get that sensation that I dont need anymore. So don't know how to handle things yet (post op 9 weeks Thursday-3/27/14). Thanks for just listening folks...makes me feel better...knowing you are out there and having issues too.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
