How long until you went back to work

Recommended Posts

My doc actually advised me not to go back until 2-3 weeks that's why I thought it was bizzare that people go back after just 2-3 days. I hope I'm one of the lucky ones who recover quickly, because I would rather go back sooner.

It took me approx 10 days. I drive an hour each way over bumpy country roads. But, I also had a hard recovery w/vomiting and dry heaving the first few days. They gave me a partial fill during the surgery. Between the swelling and partial fill, I couldn't drink Water. One they took the partial fill out, my recovery was textbook.

If you arn't having any problems, I don't see the reason for the extended time between surgery and going back to work. Did they do a more extensive surgery than the scope?

Do you do a lot of bending at work? That could be part of the reason.

My surgery was Tuesday 8/11/09. I originally planned to return to work on Monday 8/17/09. I ended up taking two more days and returned to work on Wednesday 8/19/09. I extended it because I was feeling fatigued still and a bit emotional. I have a desk job, but have to deal with some high conflict situations with people, so wanted to make sure I was feeling okay mentally/emotionally. My surgeon recommended 4 to 6 weeks off of work.

I only planned for 4 days off work and ended up needing 2 weeks. And believe me I needed every minute. It was my first surgery and I do not have a high pain tolerance. I was really surprised how it knocked me down. I was really sore. I am a Nurse Practitioner and my job is fairly sedentary so when I went back I was ready. But, boy am I glad I gave it a full two weeks.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
