Pre-Op Shakes are nauseating

Recommended Posts

My surgeon requires a PURELY liquid diet for 9 days Pre-Op. I am struggling. The mandatory shakes (HMR shakes) have an okay flavor but the texture makes me gag when I'm trying to drink them. Anyone else have similar problems or advice? I am trying not to cheat but it is SOO hard.

Call your surgeon tomorrow and tell him...you'll probably have a liquid type post op diet too and it's really imperative you follow it...so see if you can get this nailed down now!

AND FYI...this period is vile but really worth it! Hang in there!

(can you ice them and then them some?)

I found that the ones in the can, pre-made, had a weird texture. I bought the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury powder and found that it diluted in milk really well. They also have a chicken Soup one that has the same Protein but not all the cloying sweetness. Eventually, i really got tired of all that sweet.

I also follwoed others advice and got a magic bullet blender. It made mixing the shakes much easier than pulling out the huge older blender. Much easier to clean too.

See if your doctor can let you drink unjury Protein drinks. They are pretty decent, and I would recommend them to you.

Good luck, and if you need someone to talk to please feel free to contact me.

I too am finding the texture *yuck* !! Thankfully, I only have to do 2 shakes a day, and then a light meal.

I did unjury for the first month or two, but I forced them down. I have also tried EAS chocolate Pre made (got a case at BJ's), not bad when your in a rush. Refrigerate a bunch, so their handy.

Plus the pre made are great to bring with you places. Now theres no excuse not to have your quota that day.

Recentloy, I have gotten Jay Robb (health food store) creamsicle flavor. Good with cold skim milk. Expensive though.

I can't drink an Unjury now if you paid me. I think they all end up tasting gross after a while, you'll probably have to switch it up.

The nutritionist said that the shakes made with isolate are the best. Easiest Protein to digest. Look for isolate as the first ingredient. The Jay Robb brand is one.

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
